I stopped by this fish and chip spot on a whim and was seriously impressed. The hush puppies were perfectly golden on the outside and soft in the middle, with just the right amount of seasoning. The onion rings had a light, crispy batter that didn't overpower the sweetness of the onion--definitely some of the best I've had in a while. I also tried the fries and calamari. The fries were hot and crispy, not greasy, and the calamari was tender with a satisfying crisp.Everything tasted fresh and made with care. Honestly pretty mid. This might be ironic to say for a fish and chips place, but it was wayyy too fried. To the point where all I can taste was the fried-ness and not really the fish. I think they could use better seasoning too. I did appreciate how they put a bit more in my bag than what I ordered, nice people. And atmosphere is nothing special. Very much a grab and go type of spot. I would call this an "optimistic" 2 star review as I think there is room for improvement and I think that improvement can easily be implemented. read more

Stopped by this unassuming place because I was craving fish and chips, definitely did not disappoint! The fish is crispy but nice and delicate on the inside. I was excited to tell my cohort his once favorite Fish & Chip place had another change of management since Min and I was hoping the new owner was a relative from seeing his Yelp photo. I think my friend was just as excited because they left without telling us what time to meet them and instead sent a text saying they already left their home. When I arrived the new owner was MIA making me disappointed for not allowing us to meet him and getting the 411 on his fried food venture. In his place was a young couple working the establishment with the gal working the fryer and guy taking orders and manning the cash register. My wife ordered two sides of clam strips after I tried explaining if my wife can substitute a fish and clam combo for double clams and fries but he looked at me bewildered as to what I was saying and proceeded to inform me he's still learning English so my wife ended up ordering two sides of clams with no fries. For my fare I ordered a one fish entree, zucchini and mushroom sides along with an order of tempura chicken wings to share. When my friend's meal arrived he mentioned his fish wasn't really hot for being right out of the fryer and was lacking batter which made it look like it came straight out from a box of Gordon's that was tossed into hot oil. So when I bit into mine, it wasn't that tongue burning roll in your mouth hot you'd expect from being freshly fried. Maybe they let it sit so no one would burn their tongue. I told our friends I saw a tray of batter in front of the fryer so I assume they batter and fry everything except the clam strips which definitely came from a box because who has the time to dip and fry little pieces of clams. The fish and clams were 3 stars okay but the tempura wings were totally lacking flavor. They didn't even taste like they were seasoned with salt and pepper and had a little off flavor to me so they'll most likely end up in tomorrow's dinner bowl for the dogs. We were also sad to see the self serve soda machine which the two previous owners had was no longer in place and it was warm inside the restaurant. I hate eating fried food in a warm environment. So it turned out to be a lack luster dinner that wasn't really worth my travels from Elk Grove because there are plenty of F&C places in between here and there. Don't think we'll be back anytime soon. Hopefully your dining experience is better than mine. read more

Was craving Fish n Chips really badly for months. Just couldn't find a spot I'd be willing to try out till I came across Big Fish. Came in to order take out for my lady and me. Service was very friendly with two guys working today. I ordered two 2 piece entrees(came with fries and onion rings), plus a side of zucchini, hush puppies, and coleslaw. Everything tasted great. Batter was light, crispy and not overly coated. Fish was moist and delicious. Specially after a nice drizzle of Malt Vinegar! Even after a short drive home everything stayed hot and crispy. Looks like they even hole punch the to go bags so that the food doesnt get soggy. The zucchini was perfectly fried and still had great texture and body inside(not overdone and mushy). Hush puppies were nicely seasoned, soft inside and had a great crunchy exterior. Can't wait to be back to try more of the menu. read more

I'm generally not into fish and chips and the handful of times I end up at a place, it's never anything special. This spot was different. I ended up there with some friends and we just got some fish and chips but the quality of the fish was unlike any of the other spots. The fish was really nice and flaky where other places I've gone to just served mushy fish. They did a really good job of keeping the batter light and crispy where other places just had way too much batter and little fish. Very impressed and will be back. read more

What we didn't find at our CA State Fair, we sure enjoyed Big Fish -- really good tasty fried food (oil used to fry must of been fresh which makes fried food much tastier!). We were looking for a local shop for lunch & couldn't be happier with this gem. Fish, prawns & onion rings were perfectly breaded with a thin batter instead of the heavy doughy stuff some shops have.
