Been to Ray's Chicken and Fish several times. Time to tell people its a must for fish here. Its our family go to fish place. The owner Ray Is kind. You catch him on Fridays for about 3-4 hours. The place is welcoming and has lots of options to order off the menu. You can stay and eat there with a couple tables or pick up and take out what most people do. We ordered the red snapper, the perch, hush puppies and okra. The perch was moist and fresh and lots of fish. The snapper was excellent too! Around 830pm the the parking lot was a little empty and I almost thought they were closed cause how dim it looked from the outside, but glad we turned the music down and squinted eyes cards ever were open! First off the service is 5/5 start to finish. The lady that helped us was on point with welcome smiles, patience, great recommendations and just amazing. It was our first time, 4 hungry energetic kids who saw coin machines so they turned into quarter beggers, and a sweet tooth bandit mom and dad lol not once did she huff or puff at use being indecisive or the kids being loud. Great place. It says, "Palestinian Eatery," which is great and, "Long live Palestine!," but it is irrelevant to what this place is. It is simply a great fried chicken and fish place with an insanely large menu and a super friendly staff that literally tells you to always let them know if there is anything you did not like and they will take care of it. It beats most places that tell you to get lost. My wife loves fried chicken, fried fish and me; in that order. She loved the fried catfish. This place is equivalent to what Taco Bell is to Mexican Food. The food tastes like people who don't know authentic southern flavors, created the recipes. I wanted this place to be good because soul food restaurants in Sacramento with authentic southern flavors and dishes are nil to none but it failed to the highest degree. When I walked in the place was nice and clean. I ordered catfish, cornbread, potato salad and red beans and rice. The catfish was pretty basic 4/10. The batter was a thin blend of cornmeal and flour but mainly flour. It did not have enough cornmeal in the crust in my opinion. The flavor was decent and it's hard to describe but it's like if someone who didn't really know southern flavors attempted to fry catfish. The red beans and rice 0/10- HARD absolutely NOT! They were terrible. I've never had red beans and rice at a restaurant that tasted so un southern before. They tasted like someone tried to make red beans and rice and failed. The potato salad was another 0/10. It legit tasted like Safeway store-bought potato salad actually it was even worse it was more like the worst flavored pre-packaged potato salad found in grocery stores. The potato salad at the deli counters in grocery stores tasted better than this one. The cornbread was another 0/10. Jiffy cornbread tastes better. The cornbread was too moist and sticky and tasted like there was not enough cornmeal and too much sugar in the batter. I knew to skip all the desserts because there was way too many desserts for any of them to be a quality and I am glad I did. I ate some of th catfish but threw away the sides and cornbread because they were so terrible tasting. I do not recommend this place if you're looking for AUTHENTIC southern flavors. read more

We ordered, catfish, scallops, and fried string beans...yum. My grandson ordered a build your own, which consisted of shrimp, chicken wings and catfish. He ordered a side of mac&cheese, said that was okay, not sure if it was homemade. They have waffles and large selection of desserts. Service was quick and efficient. Would definitely go there again when I return to this area. If you want some good seafood, give Ray's a try. You won't be disappointed. Sorry, didn't take pictures of the food...to busy eating. We went to Ray's Chicken after craving some good fried chicken, the reviews had us really excited! The inside was warm and welcoming, with photos covering the walls and friendly staff. It was busy with people coming and going, which showed how popular it is. I also loved seeing the "Free Palestine" sign. Unfortunately, the food didn't quite live up to the hype. The fried chicken was just okay, which surprised us given all the great reviews. What we did enjoy, though, were the fried shrimp, those were delicious! I went back to Ray's on Friday night (5/29/26) and no one spoke to me. I stood there at the register- being ignored. There was no greeting, no we'll be right with you, no customer service, at all. The employee made sure she paid attention to the door dash people though- despite them walking in after me. Perhaps an oversight but this is the same vibe I got from her before but Frank stepped in. Used to really enjoy Ray's Chicken and Fish, but the food quality has gone downhill. My recent catering order (almost $300) was very disappointing -- the jambalaya was overly tomatoey and lacked seasoning, the greens were bland, and the chicken did not taste good. Several of my guests even commented on how bad the food was, which was embarrassing. Very disappointing, especially as a longtime customer. The girl behind the counter greeted me with a smile and answered any question I had. I ordered 2 large catfish nuggets, side of hush puppies, fried corn cob and red beans and rice. I also grabbed a piece of cake. The food was ready in a decent time and was hot when I got home. I was missing the red beans and rice, but was able to go back and get it. Overall, the nuggets were good, not very seasoned, but crunchy. The fried corn cob was not what I expected, it was breaded, then fried. Not a fan of that and thought it didn't need the breading. It has been a while since I have been to Ray's, and let me tell you.....it has went down hill. To start, the young lady behind the counter was not in a good mood. She said it was because they were busy. There was three people in the restaurant before me, they were served, and the restaurant just opened (I was there 25min after opening). I asked if the crab cakes was made with real crab....she lied. The jambalaya was old and burnt (I took the shrimp out to give to the cat, it was rejected. I am afraid to try anything else that I bought today and I spent about $70 dollars. My mouth still has the burnt taste just from sampling it. THIS WAS THE WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! Their customer service and food use to be outstanding......... The only thing that was good was the fries ***Update*** I took what didn't spill out of the Seafood Gumbo out of the trash and decided to take a picture of it. Everything was bad. The food at rays is finger licking good. I enjoy the fried fish, chicken and waffles, French fries, greens, fried corn and more. It's good to come by yourself or with a group. It can get busy during lunch. You can order ahead for pickup if you want to skip the line. It's a small cozy restaurant with TVs and many pictures to view while you wait. I ordered 3 pieces of fish with fries, a side of Mac, Greens, Cornbread, Potato Salad, and two Red Velvet Cakes. I spent approximately $60 dollars but was okay with that as I was craving fish. Everything was hot but disappointment set in when I opened my Mac and realized it wasn't homemade, but more like Kraft. Mac is my favorite side and that totally ruined my meal. Ate a piece of fish and fries and bagged the rest up. I probably won't finish it because no one likes cold fish, but I spent a lot of money on it and didn't want to throw it out. When I think of restaurants I think of authentic food. To receive Mac that looked and tastes like Kraft was such a huge letdown. When I first opened it up I thought it was French toast. The cod looked like it's in long rectangles. I shouldn't have gotten the cod. It was too dry. I should have gotten the catfish. Friday night and husband wants catfish. Our usual spot is a bit out of the way since we moved, the one right down the street didn't have the best reviews recently, and we got to the other place too late. Yelp'd and found Ray's! Rays was actually our usual spot on Fulton Avenue, but we didn't even know about this location in South Sac. We ordered a large catfish fillet and a 2-way with fried oysters and chicken wings, both come with fries. After paying, my husband added a crab cake to our order. My husband asked for the "orange sauce" for me, which tastes like tarter sauce with hot sauce or mayo and hot sauce. Whatever it is, I like it. We waited for about 10 minutes and our food was bagged up and we were on our way. We were about halfway through eating and my husband asked where the crab cake was. I forgot he ordered one, but it wasn't in the bag. So we drove back and the guy said he remembered putting it in the bag. No, Sir, it wasn't in the bag. Trust, we are not trying to get over anyone for free food! Food was good (just like the Ray's on Fulton), so I'm sure we'll come back again...just have to make sure we leave with everything we ordered. read more

I had left to run an errand while I was waiting for my large order and didn't know that one of the items that I had ordered was out of stock. When I returned, the employee had given me a choice to choose another protein instead. Terrible service! Placed a to-good order and got home to find out a piece of fish and side of Mac n cheese was missing. Immediately called the store to let them know and was told all they could do was give me another if I came in. I told them I'd be on my way and the lady who said her name was Owen, sarcastically said "you're coming back for a mac and cheese??". YES!! I paid your steep prices for it and you won't honor your error any other way so Im driving back from Galt to get the missing piece of catfish and mac and cheese. When my husband arrived to get the missing items, they gave him the run around, stating they know they cooked it and put it in the bag. So I guess they thought their food was that amazing that I'd eat all my food then try to lie to get an extra piece of fish and mac and cheese. What was resolved over the phone became an issue when we came back for them to make it right. Customer Service needs a cleanup at this restaurant, especially after spending $40+ on a dinner, only to be treated like we were trying to get over. Worth mentioning, the mac n cheese was hard and impossible to cut with a fork (even when still warm) and tasted like boxed Kraft mac n cheese.
