Relocated here and from where I live in elk Grove, I was visiting a nearby beauty salon or supply store rather, and I saw this little place from a distance. At first I thought it was a shut down business until I drove up and decided to walk in. It's usually those holes in the walls that have some of the best foods and unlike all the other negative reviews I am so in shock because these are the best fish and chips I've had in a very long time very crunchy very fresh. The steak fries were not so in oil they were cooked just right to perfection. Maybe it was just my luck for the two or three times that I've had these meals both and diner and twice DoorDash so I will see if anything changes but for now my experience, the food is substantial and the pricing seems fair. Captain's Fish & Chips sold me the WORST fish I've ever had. Tasted like it was fried in week-old grease. The fries were nasty, greasy, and gross, and the fish itself? Absolutely horrible. And don't even get me started on that nasty sweet tartar sauce... who thought that was a good idea? One and done. They'll never get another dollar from me. Total waste of my motherfucking money. I was in the mood for fish and found this restaurant. I must say they have a lot of options and different types of fish you can get fried. Although I prefer Basa, I was able to get the fried catfish. The two-piece plate comes with very large portions so come hungry. I appreciate the crispiness of the French fries. They also make homemade tartar sauce which is always a plus. I've noticed this low key Seafood restaurant which managed to stay open for a few years now. For a strange reason I was craving fish and chips (which I never eat) so I came in. The place is a true hole in the wall. Unattractive on the outside and underwhelming inside but clean with a few tables for dining. The server was friendly and recommend the 2 piece pollock fish and chips. I went with that and ordered a side of coleslaw to go. When I sat down at work to eat I was super impressed. The pollock was perfectly seasoned , battered, and fried. I covered it in malt vinegar and tartar sauce and was in seafood heaven. The steak fries were also perfectly prepared and generous which tasted great with ketchup. The coleslaw was super fresh. What happened to the chicken!!! It used to be big fresh crispy and light. Now it's just frozen chicken strips from a bag that's tiny dry and mostly hard breading. So disappointing. Mama loves some catfish and Captain Fish does it right! My coworkers and I are OBSESSED with this spot. We are so obsessed that we picked up a staff lunch here two weeks in a row! Small little spot in South Sacramento near Kaiser. I was craving some fish and chips, saw the good reviews, and decided to give it a try. Walked in and it wasn't too busy--got greeted right away. I ordered the 3‑piece cod and chips with a side of shrimp. The fish and shrimp both had a nice crunch and really good flavor. My neighbor recommended this place after telling her I love Fish and Chips. This is so far my favorite since moving to Sacramento. There were two of us and we both ordered the Seafood Sampler so we each had a bit of everything and did not have to strategize how to order/share things. Today was my first time in Captain's Fish & Chips, and boy it was an excellent experience to say the least! I figured I was going into a regular ol establishment with sub-par food quality and boy was I wrong! From the moment my food was brought out by this wonderful little old lady to her asking me if cared for more tartar sauce (that was homemade btw) or cocktail sauce. I ordered the "Pollock Fish Sampler" and 6 cheese sticks. Man! When I say everything tasted fresh I'm not exaggerating. The food to my expectations was of quality and did not taste oily not one bit! Even the French fries and cheese stick did not disappoint. From the conversations I had with some other people waiting on their food orders they mentioned the place does get busy at times. Located near the Kaiser Hospital on Bruceville, it is to access from Highway 99 and Mack road. The fish tastes fresh, and the chips (fries) are clearly frozen, but none of that nasty coating that has become so popular. They are not heavy handed with the batter, which I appreciate. There is nothing worse than trying to find the piece of fish or shrimp in a mound of thick, greasy batter. For Anglophiles there is no real or fake newspaper involved and the chips are French fries rather than the larger English style chips. The menu offers several types of fish including Pollock and Catfish. Sadly, nobody seems to have cod at the Fish and Chips shops anymore. Prices are in line with other similar shops in Sacramento.
