Fish and Chips
Ryan B.

Looking for a decent meal that was within proximity to Oldtown Sacramento, the wife and I stumbled upon Railroad Fish & Chips. The food was surprisingly affordable and service was definitely well accounted for. We both ordered the Fish & Chips and agreed that it was not only a better value than others but also quite tasty. The one drawback is that the seating is outdoors and you're susceptible to dealing with an unfortunate amount of outside noise but if you're looking for a quick and affordable meal this is a nice spot to stop by. 4/5.

Loved the location. Plenty of outdoor seating. The batter in the fish was crispy on the outside but kind of soggy on the inside. Fish itself was flakey. Loved the fries. If you want lemon or vinegar make sure you ask for it! Friendly service.

Phenomenal food at a great price. The fish tacos were the star of the show for me. Not too heavy on the breading - light, crisp and still tender. I absolutely loved the tartar sauce and paired with a little drizzle of lemon... I could eat these all day! Very nice spot to grab lunch after walking Old Town. Our food was ready within 10 minutes we sat outside on a picnic bench and people watched as we ate our lunch. Very nice, solid place!

I had the fish, shrimp and fries...a lot of food. 2 large pieces of fish, 4 big shrimp and a ton of fries. They use a batter sort of like a tempura batter and I liked it a lot. Very fresh, hot and tasty. We were there on a weekday at lunch and there were plenty of tables, both indoor and outdoor, from which to choose. There was a gentlemen cleaning the dining area outside nonstop. Delicious!

Next time you're in Old Sacramento run don't walk to Railroad Fish & Chips! The batter is golden delicious and crispy and the food is fresh. Every piece is battered and fried to order so that means no soggy fish waiting under a warmer. I got the fish & shrimp combo and they are generous and the fries seasoned and crispy! They are super friendly and they are quick as can be for order made seafood. There is a walk up order window without tables inside or dedicated but there are tables along the boardwalk that you can snag. They have the London style batter but they make catfish using a cornmeal batter that looks delicious and they even have pretty good burgers...something for everyone!

Just a little spot with mostly outdoor seating and probably seating for 15 inside. Super crunch on the fish fry was perfect, and a completely respectable chowder.

Visited July 16th..see my receipt. This place is just steps from the Delta King in old Sacramento. Every time I come to this area this place is always crowded! It is kid and pet friendly. They do a booming business and they get the orders out quickly. I ordered the fish and chips and they were hot and crunchy and not greasy! It also comes with fries. I shared it with my friend and we could not finish the one order! I see why they are busy..consistent in their food quality! You place your order and then they call your number when it's ready to pick up. They have inside seating ( small area) and outdoor seating both in the front and in the back where you can watch the train go by. They also serve beer and sodas. I am not sure if they have wine. Great fast lunch. No frills. Very casual yet relaxing! Great corner location!

Excellent choice if you are in old town! Quick ordering with a walk up window. Then you wait until they call your number through a speaker so you don't have to worry if you'll be able to hear them. Busy but organized vibes. DELICIOUS juicy, crispy, salty battered white fish. Thick fries with a good balance of soft inside and crispy edges. The tartar sauce was soooo good too.

We loooooooove this fixture in Old Sac. SOLID fish-n-chips, SOLID shrimp-n-chips, yummy tartar sauce, and friendly talkative staff. Crispy batter, flaky moist fish, crunchy moist shrimp, tasty cole slaw, and no-frills fries. Solid - I already said that. Inside seating was helpful (we're not kids anymore). Tons of maritime kitsch all over the walls. We happened to be there on a preview night for the Polar Express train that runs out of the station. Too fun to see the family joy. Anyway, go for the food. I mean, that's the main thing. We've since learned that early on a weekday evening is the shortest wait for food and seating . . . and parking.

Randomly stopped by as we waited for the near by boat launch. They had no line and we quickly ordered and grabbed a little outdoor table. It took less than 10 minutes to get our food which I was pleasantly surprised about. We loved the fish and the clam chowder was decent! It tasted fresh and seasoned perfectly. I didn't love the fries but I'm picky with my French fries. I also didn't love the homeless man hanging out begging for money.... But it is old sac for ya. Otherwise I'm excited to try this place again and see what else they have.

The clam chowder really slapped here. A cute little spot next to the water with outdoor seating. The food came out quick.

Bacon Cheeseburger

came here on my lunch break, food was satisfying, service was quick! I was able to walk around a little bit and my food was ready at the window. I ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger with fries! The fries were wonderful and a good amount given. The burger was also yummy, but could have used a little bit more salt or flavor on the patty itself. Other than that everything was great, i was able to finish it on my 30.

I was able to get to the front of the line and order their burger that I was told was one of the best. I grabbed a beer as well because it was one of those days ya know! I took my number sign and found some space next to a couple playing card games on a bench inside. They had a self serve icewater area that I was able to fill up my water bottle. I was also able to grab some ketchup to enjoy those fries. My burger and fries was delivered and there were more fries than expected. I focused on those first because who like cold fries, right??? The fries were actually pretty good, an above average standard French fry with salt. The burger however was phenomenal. There was an amazing crust on the outside reminiscent of a backyard bbq. There was ample bacon, lettuce, cheese and sauce to make it a balanced bite. The bun was high end brioche style, they really went all out on quality of ingredients. A standard burger build but done perfectly! Beer was cold, food was great and the ambiance is a perfect local bar. Great spot to go if you don't mind hunting for a parking space.

I have to give this a 5 star with some caveats (those are later)…read more First, if clean is your thing then this is your place. Exceptional in terms of cleanliness. Second if you have kids, then again, this is your place. I was there on a Saturday about 2 pm and there were multiple families and the kids seemed to really enjoy the vibe. As for the food and service. Service was great - people are friendly and attentive. I had the Bacon BBQ burger - good - not great, but worth the $15 or so. If i had one critique it would be that the sauce was too heavy and just detracted from the experience. As noted, the Burger had too much sauce which made the burger very messy. The burger leaked all over my hands and I used the two paper napkins in about 3 seconds flat. I went to the counter to get more napkins but there were no dispensers. So then i went to the restrooms to grab a paper towel but both restrooms were occupied. Then I pointed out to the staff that they should have napkin dispensers for their guests - the staff could see i was getting aggro so she offered the hand sink in the kitchen! Nice! Great service. A+ A few detractions - this is clearly a restaurant that leans on SYSCO - a major food purveyor for the restaurant industry. Many reviewers like the fries and shakes - I'm 90% sure these are frozen fries from SYSCO (you'll find the same fries all over the place), and the meat in the burger is probably sourced from SYSCO as well. Don't get me wrong, still tastes fine - just not distinctive. How do I know? A giant SYSCO truck was in the parking lot making their delivery when I was there. As for the atmosphere - it feels like a "Jonny Rockets" style retro burger joint but lacking the 50s style charm. It's white and red and very sterile feeling. It has some 50s decor but it's all pho/plastic and not authentic. It's not the type of place where you'd want to spend any time. It feels very well suited for a shopping mall where people can pop in, eat a solid burger and shake, then get out. The owners clearly spent a lot of time and money converting the space from the dive bar it was to what it is now, but I don't think it's a good use of the space. It's huge - it's got a large patio and tons of parking. It's the kind of place that should have been designed for guests hang out for an hour or two and spend some money, but instead they designed a small menu, counter service restaurant with a sterile atmosphere, the quick service trifecta. I hope they make it, but a space that large must have a pretty hefty rent. They'll need to fill some seats and get some wallet share to survive.

I was amazed with the size of the regular loaded nachos, it was huge! Both burgers were of decent size as well. The patties were seasoned well and super juicy. But the star of the food was by far those tri tip nachos. Big chunks of tender tri tip, sweet and tangy bbq sauce and loaded with jalapeños.
