Came in for a quick bite. From the time I walked in, everyone was SO friendly! The vibe was awesome and I felt as though they genuinely wanted to ensure everyone dining there was having a great experience. It's diner food, the menu was huge but what I thought was awesome was this salad bar! Love a good salad bar. Although I didn't get the salad bar, my side salad was delish! I really like their ranch! The chicken tenders are hand breaded, and had a very good flavor! That breading was awesome! I also loved the seasoned salt that they had on the table. Being I live in New Orleans, my go to seasoning is Tony's so I was totally unprepared for the explosion of different spices. Looking at the ingredients and I see why! Curry powder, ginger, umani medley, sage.... Like WHAT?! Yes! I need a case of this stuff!! I do want to thank Rachel for her outstanding service! Completely went above and beyond for ya girl! Great spirit that just shines right through! Becky and the gentleman that seated me, (I think he could be upper management), were very nice and attentive as well! The reviews on this Big Boy seem to be barbelled between love and hate. The loves understand that it's a Big Boy and not Chez Money in Bham. The hates seem to , well not like anything. Like the review that didn't like the "clamp shouter!". Thanks Einstein. When in Rome as the saying goes, do as the Roman's do. Well when in Big Boy do as the Big Boyans (?) do. Don't expect a cheap gourmet lunch. Go in knowing that this is going to be old school hearty fare and you'll be fine. I am of the latter group and ordered a Big Boy, fries and an iced tea with the salad and soup bar. ( Hey I had a gift card!). I was torn between "the best cheese burger in the world" the name of which they have somehow trademarked and the Big Boy but I went with the original. As for scouring the world for other cheeseburgers to compare, while appealing, seemed out of the question. I started with the salad bar which was great with, wait for it...iceberg lettuce that was fresh and crispy and all of the other faves. The soup(s) had to wait for another visit so I'll withhold judgement. My burger and fries arrived in good time and was fantastic. The Big Boy is basically what McDonalds ripped off for the Big Mac. Two patties, sauce, lettuce, pickles, you get the drift. The fries could have been in a bit more...hello 5th star, but were fine. Iced teas were brought in quick succession and were fresh with a nice wedge of lemon. They had some great looking deserts but that's for next time. All in a great if a bit pricey lunch. But hey everything is pricey these days. So put on your retro hat and your big boy pants and step back in time for a great lunch at an iconic restaurant. Average. I came here today with my parents, they wanted to take advantage of the 99c strawberry pie special (99c with purchase). I think the last time I went to a Big Boy was about a year ago, but before that, like 10+ years ago ... this one is right by my house, though, so was convenient. The pie was a bit disappointing. It's basically just strawberries, with strawberry goo (gel?), and pie crust. I liked the pie crust but thought it would be more like an actual pie. However, their other pies near the check-out counter looked good. My mom got the "cookie pie" which was just a flat cookie (not your typical "cookie pie") topped with ice cream and whipped cream. It was still tasty, though. Service was overall fine. I noticed they're open until midnight on the weekends which is good to know in case I'm looking for a late meal or snack. They also had free WiFi, which was nice. read more

5 tables in restaurant, waiter took orders from 2 other tables sat after us then tried to say it was because he was delivering hot food to other tables. We could see him the entire time, that was untrue. Sandwiches came with fries. They were literally like styrofoam and only mildly warm. We asked that just those be removed from the bill because the sandwiches themselves were good. He didn't come back to give us our bill, we had to have the cashier get it for us and the fries weren't removed. Paid for the nasty fries but did NOT leave 15%, (normally leave minimum 20%) Will never be going back. I was a waiter for 11 years and had they been busy, I would have been sympathetic. Never coming here again - twice I have had tips fraudulently added to my credit card after I paid with my card and tipped in cash. The first time I chalked it off as a mistake - the last time I got a carry out strawberry pie, tipped the dude $2 cash after I put a line through the tip spot on the receipt and put in the correct total. I check my account and I was charged $4 more than the receipt. I previously used to come here once a week with my daughter, but I'll just go to the one in Madison Heights now. The other slim Jim had no butter on it when I asked her to put butter on both size and put it on the grill. Also I order a turkey club the other cook made . Thinking how can you mess up but they did one order was on a plate. It looks so delicious other turkey club had no Mayo wasn't toasted no bacon and the bread was old look like kid made it. I was there a couple weeks ago. The clamp shouter had a funky taste & smelled spoiled. I had a over seasoned hamburger with fries. Talking to the manager/owner was the most frustrating experience. He told me that was nothing wrong with the clamp soup and related to the hamburger, I couldn't eat he was asking me "what else do you don't like of the menu" I mean I can get smart myself I don't need this from a restaurant manager. I had to ask to take the hamburger off the bill including the buffet. After showing a couple funny faces he agreed to take off the hamburger but not the buffet because I did get some other items from it. In general when I go to a restaurant I'm more than happy to pay for my food and usually I don't expect perfection. But having lunch as punishment I don't think that's right. Never tried Big Boy and being that it was down the block from my hotel, I thought I'd stop in and give it a try since I was starving. The patty melt in the menu said 1/2 pound patty. I ordered it figuring I would get 2 meals out of it. Got back to hotel and noticed only 1 patty the size of the quarter pounder from McDonald's. So I called the restaurant to confirm and was told that it was only 6 ounces of patty. VERY DECEIVING.. The reason I mention all this is because I had gastric by-pass and cheated going off menu. The patty melt was so lacking that I FINISHED THE ENTIRE SANDWICH AND STILL FEEL HUNGRY. For the price I paid (over $9) I could have gone next door for a quarter pounder and been full (past experience). With that being said, the sandwich was well prepared. Not too oily or overlooked because the patty was a bit on the thin side. Plenty of parking and a clean inside. read more

Ok, let me first explain that this trip was solely for the kids and this review is not based on food so much as service. It was close to Thunderbird Lanes and it had a variety of food so that the kids would all be happy so we went. I came in thinking it would be the typical Koney island type stuff... and yes it was. BUT, the service here was amazing. I mean brighten the day and be sun shinny happy kind of amazing. Our server was a man named Jamie and he was about the nicest waiter I have ever had and he was very good with the kids. The vibe in here was super friendly and even a lady in another booth came over and shared some books she thought might be fun for the kids! These are the types of people that go here because the place shares a friendly open atmosphere. At one point a few of the waitress came over and started talking to us about how the kids have the week off. The food is your typical diner type food and it was good for that type of food but the service deserves a 5 stars and I am picky picky picky about service. Good job Big Boy! read more

I went here on a Saturday morning for the breakfast bar. The place was 1/2 empty and we waited 20 minutes for water. The food selection was sparce. They never refilled the waffles or eggs the entire time we were there (even though they said it was coming). The biscuits were cold and rock hard. The sausage gravy was only about room temperature. Some of the same friendly faces, however the food has taken longer then usual, not very clean bathrooms, it just doesn't seem to be the same as it use to be. I am wondering what has happened here. It used to be my favorite Big Boy. Yes, the people are friendly. I had a corned beef sandwich but it had no thousand island or any sauce on it and no sauerkraut. I asked why they didn't put sauerkraut or dressing. They have sauerkraut and they have Big Boy sauce. She said it's because I ordered the half sandwich and soup, so why wouldn't you give me a half spoonful of sauerkraut if I say I like sauerkraut on my corned beef. I won't order the corned beef sandwich again. I didn't get a refill on my iced tea. We didn't get water. It just seems like this place is a half step slower than it used to be. Passed by big boys and had a craving for an hamburger. Pulled into the parking lot and walked in. There was a line of 6 people waiting to pay their bill at the register. Waited by the hostess stand for 5 mins wondering if I should seat my self then a lady came by and took me to a table with a menu. I knew what I was gonna order and waited for someone to take it. After about 10 mins no one came by. During that time, other people came into the restaurant and got seated and served food. Was thinking of ordering a pizza from jets or some other pizza place and have it delivered to my table since I was being refused service. Very surprised at Big Boy serving substandard food. However, we had that experience 2 days ago. We ordered 2 Meatloaf Sammy sandwiches which included fries per the menu for carryout. First off, when we got home we discovered there were no fries with either sandwich. That was only the beginning. We then started eating our sandwiches. They were so salty that they were not edible. They were not supplied on sourdough bread, either. We ended up throwing the sandwiches out and were only able to eat our onion rings and broccoli soup, which were both good. We have been going to this location for over 40 years. This is the worst restaurant experience we can remember. read more

We discovered the all-you-can-eat Fish Fry buffet on Friday nights this summer, and have been back a couple times. It is $14 and includes: fried and baked fish, fried clams, fried smelt (seasonal, didn't have last time I was there) and the usual sides (e.g., macaroni, mashed potatoes, tator tots, vegetables, etc.) as well as 3 or 4 different kinds of soup, full salad bar and cut-up melon slices.
