While I was heading to the train station on a Citi Bike, I realized there was a bakery. I happen to be on the hunt for some cake to enjoy on the train back to Philadelphia. So I whipped my bike around, and headed inside. The exterior of the store is small and cute. I loved seeing everything in the window. Great advertising. The name itself also made us giggle. There were a few others walking by and they had a giggle too. Clever for sure. Really gets people looking. Once inside there were two men working. I think it was close to closing because they were wrapping things up. But, they were willing to help us place our order and get us situated. They were kind and helpful. I opted for a chocolate base cupcake, red velvet, and funfetti. Funfetti was my favorite! The cake was moist and the icing was nice and sugary. I prefer a sugary icing. The chocolate cupcake was rich in flavor. I absolutely loved the cupcakes. Simple with a little pizazz. The cost was about $4+ for each cupcake. I think that is on point and pretty reasonable. It is comparable to other bakeries in NY and other states. I'd definitely return to grab some more on my next trip. read more

Everything tasted so fresh but the guava turnover was definitely my favorite as it was sweet and with a flaky dough . Very cute place with LOTS to choose from . Once I discovered that there was a bakery within 10 blocks of my job with Booty in the name, I had to investigate. I came by here on Thursday for a light lunch and to pick up some pastries for my co-workers. This involved an eventful walk down 8th Avenue highlighted by an SVU set nearby; I of course paused for a few minutes to try to find Mariska but was unsuccessful. Anyway. Not much of a negative, but I WAS a little surprised that that the back of the space wasn't as customer friendly - there's a lot of inventory stacked up, and it's kind of drab. And maybe that's partially because by definition, the front and exterior is VERY much not drab at all - as you'd expect, there's a lot of rainbow colors and cartoon depictions of a guy with his rump sticking out. When you have a theme, you have a theme. But if they have the ability, I'd recommend spiffing up the back area, because if it had been more hospitable I would have taken advantage of it. Since I was pretty hungry, I decided to get an empanada (initially I went with beef but the guy behind the counter recommended chicken since it was fresher and made that day - points for and against there. Appreciate the honesty and pivot (and it WAS fresh), but not great that there are not-fresh empanadas from the prior day prominently displayed. Random food trucks around the city shouldn't have a noticeable edge on a bakery. The empanada was tasty and flavorful, but for the price was actually pretty expensive, and I say that as someone who's grown pretty desensitized to NYC prices. It cost about $5 and I got literally three bites out of it. It should be at least 50% bigger than it is. I also got a guava turnover, which was decent as well. Guava is one of my faves and to me a very underrated filling/flavor, so I'm always glad to see it getting its due. The top of the turnover had sugar granules on it (also something I tend to like for both texture and taste reasons), but it was a little too much - it made the pastry too sugary which I know is a strange complaint for someone who knowingly walked into a bakery. The cupcakes and cookies I got were warmly received by my colleagues and demolished within an hour or two (I got a variety of each), so that's also another positive. I had a hunk of the M&M cookie on my way back, which was slightly undercooked, just the way I liked it. The gentleman who assisted me was perfectly nice (and the chicken empanada recommend is a big selling point) and offered up suggestions on the best options for the variety pack we collated. My only real issue is he didn't provide disclaimers about the bag fees - he offered to put everything in a bag (because why wouldn't you?) only for me to find out when I got rung up that I was charged $0.25 per bag. Now, that's not going to break me but that's more of a principal thing. Tell people when you're assessing additional charges for the choices they're making. Left a bad taste in my mouth that the guava wasn't able to totally fix. I'm probably not coming back here for a big order, nor for an actual meal (even a light one, since I ended up having to buy an emergency hot dog on my way back to the office to fill me up a little more). A random pastry on my travels through Chelsea? Sure. But I think there are better price points out there, strange as that is to say in this inflationary environment. Cool name though. read more

1 star, less if possible. As longtime customers of Big Booty Bread Co., my friend and I were deeply shocked and disappointed by the treatment we received during our recent visit. We've always appreciated the café for celebrating Latin American culture--but ironically, we were met with hostility simply for speaking Spanish. When my friend placed our order in Spanish, the woman behind the counter immediately shouted, "I don't speak Spanish," and became aggressively rude. She threw our order on the counter and continued yelling at us, creating an incredibly uncomfortable atmosphere. The situation escalated as we were leaving, when she loudly--and falsely--accused us of using a slur, in front of another customer who witnessed the entire thing and was visibly stunned. We left feeling humiliated and completely unwelcome. It's appalling to be treated this way, especially in a business that claims to celebrate Latin American heritage. No one should face aggression for speaking their native language. I sincerely hope the management addresses this woman unacceptable behavior and ensures all customers are treated with respect. P.S. I'll miss the "cortado" and the delicious "pan de bono" but luckily there are other places with better service. read more

They're soft and doughy on the inside, with a filling of choice (guava, apple, strawberry, dulce), and crunchy on the outside with a sprinkling of granulated sugar. It's the most comforting morning treat and never too sweet. Do me a favor and warm them lightly before having them. I've also tried the cupcakes they're famous for but those were nothing to write home about. Cappuchino is strong and decently priced for the area. Let me start off by saying that I love cupcakes and I'm very picky when it comes to cupcakes. I recently discovered Big Booty Bread and it is hands down my favorite cupcake spot in the entire city. I have been there about ~5 times (as of today) and the taste / quality has been so consistent, which is very hard to achieve when it comes to bakeries and baked goods in general. I've never once gotten a dry or stale cupcake from Big Booty Bread!! The cupcakes do not have a "processed" taste and I don't feel full or heavy after eating one (or two). The cupcake I got today had a bite sized cookie on top which was amazing -- so now I'm dying to try their cookies! I highly recommend this bakery! read more

Big bootie bakery seemed like a gimmicky joke every time I would pass by it and see the funny sign but then I decided to try it. On my first visit I got a chocolate marshmallow cupcake. The cupcake was disappointing as the chocolate part was dry and lacking flavor. My opinion changed after my 2nd visit when I tried their guava pastry, it was flaky and stuffed with delicious guava. After that my friend and I have returned many times and my absolute favorite is the chocolate brownie. The watermelon mint lemonade is a MUST! We walked over 12,000 steps on a layover in NYC and were craving a pucker up lemonade in the warm sunshine and found this spot online. It was worth another mile walk to try out the lemonade which was sweet and tart and refreshingly delightful on every sip. LOL It's a very small bakery that you order stuff to go. The young lady behind the counter was very sweet and patient as she answered a few questions I had. I finally decided to get the banana loaf cake which I seem to be enjoying more these days. I also got the oatmeal raisin cookie. The banana loaf was tasty and not too sweet. It was moist and didn't break apart when I took that first bite. LOL It was very fulfilling with a cup of hot tea that evening. The next day I slaughtered my cookie which tasted better than my banana loaf. It was more sugary and hit those sugar cravings I love. I went there during the Holidays. My previous experiences at Big Booty have always been positive, but unfortunately, this time was different. I ordered and paid for an almond milk chai latte, an espresso, and a cinnamon roll. The espresso was mediocre, and the cinnamon roll was clearly not fresh. It seemed like the lady burnt the pastry in the oven to make it appear fresh, but it ended up so dry that we couldn't eat it. The worst part was the almond milk chai latte. When it was ready, she called me to pick up an OAT milk chai latte. I respectfully said I had ordered almond milk and she replied, very annoyed, that she had only oat milk. When I placed my order, she repeated "almond milk" after me, never mentioning oat milk. I said it was fine, but then I tasted the most horrible, watery, and disappointing cup of latte I've ever had. I left it all and told her I couldn't drink it. She continued watching her phone and told me to leave it there! When my husband tried to use the restroom, she stopped him, saying he couldn't use it. My husband saw that she had left her luggage and personal stuff in the toilet! I will never go there again if I see that lady, but I'll be glad to return when the other nice guy is working. I passed by Big Booty Bread and stepped in on a whim. I am glad that I did because I was able to try out some Columbian specialties. I got the pan de yuca/cheese rock in bacon and herb cheese flavor. I also got the bono relleno/guava pocket. I definitely enjoyed the cheese rocks more. It had a nice density to it and I loved the cheesiness. It also helped that I ate it when I was super hungry. The guava pocket wasn't too much to my liking. It was kind of dry--which I am guessing is probably supposed to be that way based on the ingredients. While the guava did taste like guava, it was unfortunately very, very sweet. Too sweet for me. I had to scoop some out to eat the rest of the pastry. But! I walked in for one muffin and walked out with a Red Velvet cookie and a Cheesecake Brownie. It smelled better than any bakery I have been in. The Red Velvet cookie melted in my mouth. It slightly felt like falling in love. You may think that's a little over the top way of expressing it but what else can you expect from a Big Booty Bakery? The richness of the Cheesecake Brownie felt luxurious and well worth the $3.25. Too many of these and we will ALL end up with a Donk. Who can resist checking out some "Big Booty" and "Hot Buns"? Such a great catchy name! There was a variety of cupcakes flavors, brownies, cookies and other sweets to choose from. We decided to try the triple chocolate cookie which was really good. The staff was very friendly and asked if we would like to have it warm up. It sounded great to have a warm cookie. I came in here on a Saturday afternoon to look for some Colombian specialties. They make empanadas as well as other baked delicacies like pandebono (cheese bread). They seemed super busy with custom cakes and other items, so I got a couple pandebono. They were good, but not great, a bit overcooked. I told myself I would stop in after staring at the pastries every time I go to work, and I'm glad I did. The costumer service is just grand. All three of the employees were ready and willing to serve me as I walked in the door. All of the pastries looked so tasty. I ended up getting the Rocky Road brownie for $3.25. The employee asked if I wanted a corner or middle piece of the brownie. That's SO NICE! I took a seat for a little bit to be accompanied by some great drag art.
