This year I decided to get my license to carry a concealed weapon. I've owned guns most of my life and have been shooting at indoor ranges off and on about 30 years. All of my shooting experience has been limited to the range. Stand and shoot. Carrying a handgun is a tremendous responsibility so I decided tactical and practical gun training was imperative. I decided on Big Boar Tactical because it was reasonably priced and within a reasonable distance from where I lived in Plano. After speaking with Sue on the phone, I felt immediately that I would take a 4 hour, half day course at this facility. She was personable, friendly and she answered all of my questions.
Big Boar Tactical was pretty easy to find. It's out in the country but it's basically a left, a right and a left off the North Dallas Tollway. When I arrived at the facility, the amenities were minimal. It is not a country club. It is an outdoor shooting range. This is why the rates are reasonable. As long as you know and are prepared, you'll be fine for four hours. They provide water but I suggest you eat breakfast before you get there or pack a lunch and a small cooler. Wear a hat, a light shirt and light pants. Also bring sunscreen. Prepare yourself for a great experience.
My instructor Tate was phenomenal. First, he introduced himself and told me about his background and experience. He is completely qualified and he was able to explain things clearly and concisely. He had a great personality, wasn't over bearing or a know it all. I explained why I was there and what I hoped to achieve. He listened and we took it from there. What he does is starts you out taking a series of shots at a one-inch square. He showed me the proper way to stand and hold the gun. We repeated the drill and immediately my accuracy improved. He then does a series of shooting drills to get a feel of what you know and can do and he takes it from there. We moved through the drills at a good pace. He pushed me to limit of my abilities and then we progressed. If something was too easy, we moved on. If I felt I wasn't getting something, he would go back over it. If I had a question, he would answer it. If you made a mistake, he didn't make you feel stupid. We just corrected it and moved on. When I did well, Tate was enthusiastic and encouraging. If we needed a break, we took a break. By the end of the afternoon, I was worn out.
I highly recommend Big Boar Tactical to anyone who shoots a gun or wants to shoot a gun. I had a blast and learned more than I ever expected. If you go there with the attitude that you are there to learn something, you will gain more value from the experience. What I really learned is how much I didn't know. I came in with some preconceived notion of holsters and how I wanted to carry my gun but I came away thinking completely differently afterwards. My draw time started at around 2.63 seconds and by the end of the day I was drawing from a holster in 1.69 seconds. I started shooting 6 shots in a six-inch square and got my grouping down to 6 shot in a one inch square all in the same hole.
All and all it was a great experience. I recommend taking a class during the week when you can get personalized training and there is no crowd. You might want to bring a friend or not. I plan to take another half day class in about a month. I have been practicing my draw at home and hope to get my draw time down to a second. I'm a little older and a full day would have been too much for me so I recommend the half day class. You can't go wrong here. It's not the Frisco Gun Club or the Bullet Trap. It is an outdoor range in the country. There is no air conditioning or restaurant. It is what it is. But the customer service is above all the rest. I didn't feel like the only thing they were interested in was my money. I felt like Tate wanted to see me excel. I don't like going into a range where the people behind the counter act like they are doing me a favor by talking to me. And when they do talk to me, I don't like feeling that I am being an inconvenience. I give it a 5 out of 5 stars. read more
