Sporting clays normies rifles, and traditional pistol range. No long range revolvers or pistols even if equipped and dedicated to that event. Got the .308 and .556 rifles zeroed at 100. Pulled out my AR pistol in 5.56, and was told it was a no go on the rifle range. The pistol is a 7.5 inch 5.56 AR with a Leopold 3-12 pistol scope. It is a semi auto equivalent of a Thompson contender. Dedicated paper and hog puncher. The range master informed me of unwritten rules in place from the owner. The rules: no pistols shorter than 10 inches on the rifle range. Exemption being .300BO because " That particular caliber improves with shorter barrels." No long range revolvers. We came to Fossil Pointe as a family for our LTC class and certification taught by Dan Graeber. Mr. Dan is incredibly versed in the laws and made learning fun. Before the shooting portion, he took time to patiently explain how to adjust my grip and stance. He even helped me figure out my dominant eye which I'd been struggling to do on my own. He is a knowledgeable and kind instructor. The range itself is HUGE. The shooting lanes are outdoor so dress accordingly. The front desk staff was accommodating and kind. First time clay shooting and very little time using a shotgun. Got a lesson with David at several stations. Got me to beginner level, hit some missed a few. Good instructor. Enjoyed the shooting. This place is fantastic! I've primarily visited pistol ranges in the past but wanted to get acquainted proper handling/safety with my first 20 gauge and also have some fun with sporting clays in the process. The staff here are very welcoming for first timers and took the time to answer all of my questions and even make suggestions. Two fine gentlemen met us on the first station just to briefly walk my nephew and I through the process. The clubhouse area is very nice and the sporting clay course is nicely laid out in a wooded area with 12 stations. There is plenty of shade so even in hot Texas summers during mid-day it was still comfortable out there. The pricing is also very affordable. All in all it's a better bang for the buck (seriously, no pun intended!) than the pistol range. I will definitely be returning and introducing my other friends, family, and colleagues to this great sport at Fossil Pointe! read more

I would not base anything off the single poor review about Fossil Pointe Shooting Sports. Everything thing about Fossil Pointe is amazing. Our local chapter of Ducks Unlimited held our annual charity sporting clay shoot there last weekend. Our event was a great success in very large part to Fossil Pointe, its incredible staff and its owners Maryam and David. We had nearly 130 people at our event and due to the wet weather, we were in danger of having to cancel the event. Maryam did an amazing job of calming people down during the rain delay and after about an hour wait we resumed shooting. The maintenance staff had their hands full due to the rain keeping the machines running. They did an incredible job of keeping things moving. Lastly, Fossil Point, and Maryam and David in particular bent over backwards to accommodate us. They gave us free reign of the clubhouse to set it up like we needed for our event and provide all the tables and table cloths for out use. This is a first rate facility with an incredibly friendly and professional staff. If you get a chance to go shoot there, jump at it. read more

Friendly and professional staff. Beautiful sporting clays course! Electronic pullers allow you to go on the courses by yourself. Oh, and I can't leave out the rifle/pistol range. Finally found a public rifle range that goes over 100 yards....up to 200 yards! They also have a long range (only open on specific days) that ranges from 350 yards to 800 yards. I was told that one must qualify at 200 yards before they are permitted on the Long Range. Can't wait to try the Long Range next time! I will definitely be back. read more

My son and I have been going there for several months now and have yet to have a problem with Fossil Pointe. They seem committed to customer service. A case in point, we happened to ask if they had a 5-stand setup. As they had just had the State Finals onsite, they were not quite set up but asked me to let them know the next time I would be there and they would have it ready. Another case in point, while at the pistol range I was trying to no avail to help my son alleviate an issue of limp-wristing that was leading to stove piping. Randy, the RSO, noticed our issue and stopped to give a few pointers that not only alleviated the stove piping but also greatly improved his grouping! Sporting Clays I believe they have 3 course of different difficulties though I have only tried one of them. Each station is set up to give you a different challenge with clay pigeons flying ways you might encounter them in the field. There is even one set up to roll them like a rabbit running (a personal favorite). The number of clays you throw is kept track of by a magnetic card. If you don't feel like walking they also have golf carts available for rent. The location is also a benefit. It is far enough out that you feel you are alone (e.g. no planes flying overhead). Pistol/Rifle Range My first impression was that Randy wasn't like the usual RSOs one meets. He was very personable and friendly. The pistol range was only about 10 yard but have a variety of steel you could shoot or you could place your own paper targets. The rifle range had both 100 and 200 yards available. Imagine the excitement of ringing steel for the first time at 200 yards! Both were open air but had a covered awning the helped block the sun but also amplifies even the intermediate caliber rifles. Clubhouse I can't say much about this but that it certainly looks comfortable and there is always a game on the television on the weekends. Fossil Pointe is definitely a place I would recommend to others. My only complaint is that it is a good hour from DFW but worth the drive! read more

Fossil pointe told us that we could shoot at there range today until 4 PM so we arrived at 2:45 to shoot after making the hour drive out they told us we can't shoot today because they were hosting a wedding. However the calendar on their website showed no events going on today. Absolutely nothing. It's the only reason we picked this weekend to come out and shoot. Oh Ya it was for a bachelor party I should probably mention that. I will never be back out to this shooting club or advise anyone else to do the same, these people showed no empathy for paying customers that drove all the way out to Decatur. I can't attest to the quality of the course but I wouldn't give it a chance if I got to shoot for free so if you really want to make the drive call ahead of time and be very specific about what you want to do and when you want to do it. read more

Beautiful facility. Shooting skeet over the backdrop of rolling hills is the most unique in the entire state of Texas. It takes shotgun sports to a new level. The staff is friendly, professional, experienced. If you have a problem with a sporting clay thrower, the staff responds immediately. The skeet and trap throw registered targets. I've hosted charity events, attended hosted events, and just gone out and practiced here. It's 45 minutes from where I live, and there is a sporting clays/skeet, trap range within 20 minutes of where I live. My son and I will pick Fossil Pointe over the other facility any day. Well, one day we didn't, but we won't be making that mistake again. The staff and owners are friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and responsive. Got a problem with one of the traps? Call up to the clubhouse and it gets handled...now. Got a question? They can answer it. Need a lesson in one of the disciplines? David's got you covered. This is the only public range where you get this level of service. Home range for two high school clay target teams, and regular practice location for at least one other. This facility supports growing youth in the shooting sports. I highly recommend this place to all disciplines of shooting. read more
