I write this in response to the review of William Dewey Hockemeyer, who has disparaged me and my company under various other names (Bill Smith, William H., William Ha) as well. The fact that he has chosen to harass VX in this way, speaks volumes as to his credibility (and lack thereof). I take much comfort in the fact that several of my students and military colleagues have come to my defense with responses to this reviewer as well as their own reviews. Nevertheless, I am compelled to respond myself.
VX Marksmanship is a private tactical training facility. Its instructors have real world military and law enforcement experience. In my case, I was a Marine Team Leader in Force Recon with several deployments overseas, as well as a sniper instructor. I'm not interested in breaking down anyone either mentally or physically, as this reviewer suggests. What I am interested in is helping students reach their potential by having them think outside the box and push themselves physically.
Interestingly, the reviewer does not even remotely suggest that he was overly taxed mentally or physically at VX. To the contrary, he successfully completed several courses and levels in both of VX's pistol and carbine curricula. He accomplished this in spite of what he says is my overbearing demeanor. Notably, I was the reviewer's instructor in 16 of his 19 courses, he bought his second package of 10 courses after several training courses with me, and he thought well enough of me and my teaching-style to bring his son to a night shoot taught by me.
And, while he believes he was misled about the levels of the curriculum he would complete with a ten course package, he nowhere contends that he did not receive a high level of training in the fundamentals of both platforms (pistol and tactical carbine), shooting on the move, ground fighting, fighting while wounded and instinctive shooting. In each of these first five levels, the student learns the basics in the first course and then receives more advanced training in the second course of that level. In the reviewer's case, he did well enough to move through five levels (10 courses) in each of pistol and carbine.
As with any martial art, you don't take 10 or 20 courses and have it down. Yes, you have achieved a high level of skill. But that is just the beginning. It is not uncommon for our students who have completed the first five level courses to repeat some of these courses, in order to develop the necessary muscle memory and the proper mindset.
The reviewer seems to mock the importance of mindset, and to dismiss as unnecessary my "militaristic" demeanor and the imposition of "stress" into training scenarios. Make no mistake: tactical training is serious training. At VX, each curriculum is based on the training I received as an operator in Marine Force Reconnaissance, and my training with and of Tier I - III communities (including as an instructor of the Special Operations Training Group and as a military contractor instructing both advanced sniper and CQB for the O'Gara Group). Why is that? The answer is simple: so our students are prepared to survive a life-threatening situation. As we all know, you fight like you train. The reviewer has a much greater chance of surviving an active shooter situation because of his training at VX. He will not deny that.
As to the price, the reviewer does not deny that he got what he paid for - high level tactical firearm training. Moreover, he got it for the hourly cost of a highly-trained personal trainer you might hire at the gym. The only difference is each course is 3 to 4 hours long not the 45 to 60 minutes you might spend with such a personal trainer at the gym.
I want to thank not just those who came to my and my company's defense, but also all of my other students and military brethren for their continued support. It is especially heart-warming this time of year as we celebrate the birth of our Nation.
