Hello Reviewers, This review has been a long time coming to…read moregive this place 5stars and comment on how absolutely amazing this gym is. It's rare to find a martial arts gym like this that honors its' fighters and community. Staff members are friendly/helpfuly/supportive in whatever caused you to come to this gym. I saw multiple occasions where the head coach would pour time/effort/care into teaching each student here, especially from the young kids sessions; dealing with incidents of behavioral issues with such finesse and understanding. While at the same time providing a place with the GREATEST equipment for martial arts/physical training (150lb dead-weight sack was so cool working out with) A real Fighters gym The price is THE absolute deal for the service provided at this facility with unlimited classes and gym access This place truly is a FANTASTIC addition to our community here in Plano,TX and I am so happy and honored with the head coach's decision to open his gym here. Thank you. IT'S REALLY CLEAN TOO!!!

Personal Experience - Please Read Before Training Here…read more I've been boxing for over 10 years and initially joined McSweeney's in 2021 when the gym first opened. I trusted Coach McSweeney's experience and judgment. Unfortunately, I suffered a serious injury while sparring in December 2024 -- a torn ACL. At the time, I was told to "walk it off," and I did, trusting that it was something minor. I continued to train, despite recurring pain and instability in my knee. The injury worsened over time, and my concerns were often brushed aside. I was told I didn't need surgery and that he had gone through similar injuries himself, which made me delay seeking medical attention. Eventually, my knee gave out during training, and I was forced to get checked. I've now been diagnosed with a torn ACL and meniscus and am scheduled for surgery. I've lost out on job opportunities and missed out on other commitments because of this. I want to be very clear: the community at this gym is great. This isn't about the members. But if you're considering training here, please listen to your body and do not dismiss injuries based on casual advice -- no matter who it comes from. If you're in pain, go see a doctor right away. I'm sharing this not out of bitterness, but to help prevent someone else from going through what I did. I remained respectful and patient throughout the process, but I did not feel supported when I finally brought this up to Coach. I wish I had trusted myself sooner. This is my honest account and not meant to attack anyone personally -- just to raise awareness so others can make informed decisions about their health and training.

The tips and techniques are very helpful. I feel prepared to defend myself in a variety of real world situations. I am also more aware of my body language, my surroundings and other signals bad people put off. Now I am empowered and confident walking to my car in the dark, getting gas in a not so great part of town or even at a crowded/loud bar. Justin did a great job walking us through the "why" and myth busting. No more relying on pepper spray or putting my keys between my fingers! Thanks so much!

Combatives This place is doing a fantastic job in training real people to handle real world everyday threats. The instructor Justin is incredibly knowledgeable and thankfully patient with everyone. All the Team Members make you feel welcome. Also, the rest of the staff was great at answering questions and explaining not only the moves, but why we apply it. They offer a flexible training schedule. They offer multiple chances to train during the week it, even Sundays. Since I travel so much I appreciate the flexibly. It's also very refreshing to train with real people, using real everyday language that's easy to understand. I highly recommend anyone who cares about their personal safety(and their family's safety) should at least pay this place a visit. There's no pressure and the training you get in your first class will be worth the visit.

But if you are looking for a place to sharpen your character while you sharpen your skills, Sharpen Iron Academy (SIA) in Plano is in a league of its own. At SIA, you aren't just a number; the professors know you by name and are genuinely vested in your success both on and off the mat. This is a culture of discipline, accountability, and mentorship where the "iron sharpens iron" philosophy is lived daily. Whether it's the kids' classes, the youth program, or the specialized women-only classes, there is a deep level of trust and a guaranteed safe space for every student. It is more than a gym--it is a community and a family where you are pushed to grow in a supportive, high-level environment.

Their Godfather helped me research studios and after reading the CV for their head instructor Professor Henrique it was time to give it a shot. They had a lot of fun during the trial class, but they were nervous to start, not wanting to be away from Mom even though I was only three feet off the mat. Thankfully SIA instructors are not only skilled at keeping students engaged during training, but are very family centered, patient and caring. They were able to connect with each one of my kiddos so that they felt comfortable training as I looked on. By parent teacher conferences in February their preschool teacher let me know that both had grown so much in maturity and confidence and was curious to know what I was doing differently. Almost two years later the twins are well adjusted, focused and always happy when they step off the mat after an hour training session. Professor Henrique, Professor Lucas, Professor Matheus, Coach Queila, Coach Enrique, Coach Ian, Coach Ella, and Coach Anthony have become family and there is no other place I would have my children be twice a week. They offer adult classes in the morning and evening and several of the parents after seeing the transformation in their own children have started to earn their stripes as well.

It wasn't until I stepped foot in Ahn's Tae Kwon Do for the first time that I realized what a real martial arts education was about. Master Ahn is a real 6th degree black belt verified by the World Taekwondo Headquarters in South Korea, and he has dedicated his life to his craft. As a result, his school is not one of those "belt factories," and every single one of his students earn their ranks. He is not unnecessarily tough on any of his students, but he also will not advance anyone to the next belt if he does not believe they are ready. Classes are structured in a way so that you improve your strength, technique, flexibility, and stamina all at the same time. I personally felt that I improved more in my first year with Master Ahn than I did in all 7 years at my previous school. I also feel that the self-defense Master Ahn teaches is much more practical and intuitive than the over-the-top, flamboyant movements taught at many other schools. In addition to being an amazing Tae Kwon Do instructor, Master Ahn is a caring and compassionate person who you can talk to about anything. When I left for college a few months ago, he would periodically message me to ask how I was doing and talk about what was going on in my life. I have always felt like I could rely on him for support, and you do not come across people like that very often. Ahn's Tae Kwon Do Institute is among the best schools in the DFW area, and I would highly recommend that anyone who is even slightly interested in learning this martial art give him a call and try out one of his classes. You will not regret it.
