That ain't as big a number as it may sound like. I was surprised that my wife for those decades was supportive of my beginning at such a school. I assumed then that her enthusiasm had something to do with a large life insurance policy on me that was in effect at that time, 2.5 years ago. The policy is lapsed, and she is still supportive, so maybe not. I am not a fast learner in this domain, but I am a learner. Sometimes I can even coach a move or two with my workout partners. Usually, I'm the hapless nail, rarely the hammer. This is not a bad thing. It is necessary. The people who show up and continue to show up to train seem to me to define a psychographic group that is a group that you benefit by being close to. Do hard things and keep doing them. Then do them some more. Then do them some more. Special people congregate here. Right here. Things change while practicing this discipline. For me, positively but slowly. For normal people, positively but much more quickly. This is the place to train and to get as effective as situations may require you to be later.

What I am amazed at is Master Ahn's ability to tap into every child's desire to succeed, and accomplish what is needed. He can reach the frail, beaten, and insecure, the pampered and indulged. He pulls from them what is required, what is expected of them. "What they must do." "They must reach inside and pull from within to accomplish, stand strong and defiant when facing strength. Master Ahn has perfected a curious combination of gruffness, speaking truth to every situation; be it criticism, instruction, or praise. Students learn to take criticism for what it is, a tool needed to achieve a goal, sometimes rising from failure, to achieve that goal. There is an understanding that doing what is demanded of oneself is expected. Proper form and order are essential. Yet it is not all that is required; desire, boldness, and savage determination to protect oneself are required at times. Students are taught to be kind, helpful, and encouraging to others, as well as to determine when a stronger, protective reaction is called for. Master Ahn will sustain a solid influence in the lives of my grandchildren. As a teacher for 30 years and a coach for 11 years, I highly recommend his classes.

Somehow Sombra and the leaders in this community manage to train at their high level (amazing to watch!) while inviting the younger participants and newer folks to participate, grow and be challenged at their level. By the end of the class, everyone seems to walk out more joyful than when they came in. They are exhausted in a good way. So many times, I hear people talking about being able to do something they previously thought they were not capable of. Sombra is an experienced, kind, patient teacher. He creates a fun, lively atmosphere. Sombra and the other leaders in the group are impressive in their athleticism and intellect (they will nerd out if you ask them to ;)). I've watched everyone grow in their practice over the years. It's a great community.

Samuel's journey to black belt…read more I started as a white belt at this Dojo and immediately i fell in love with taekwondo because here I could learn a bunch of new workouts and kicks and learn to be a black belt. At white and high white belt, i learned Korean numbers 1-8 and I started learning stances such as, horseback riding stance, forward stance and back stance. At yellow and high yellow belt I started to learn a lot more forms and kicks and stances. It was starting to get tough but I really wanted to be a black belt just like I see all the instructors are, so From green all the way to red belt, I committed to taekwondo and did the same routine every day, and I started to notice that when i did my sit-ups, back-ups and push-ups they started to feel lighter and easier and that is what I told the instructors and they said, Its because your putting in the effort and committing into coming to taekwondo class without giving up. When i reached high red belt, I was happy because I was 2 belts away from black belt but then I stopped coming frequently because it was starting to get boring doing the same thing every day, but I thought to myself, why would I push myself this far and yet stopped coming, so I started coming when to grading did white through red belt forms and then I did my high red belt and because I was so focused and determined to get my deputy black belt I got it and moved up to the next rank. At deputy black belt, it was much much harder than all the other belts i had completed because in this belt since you would test for black belt they would correct you for every single mistake you made to your kicks and especially stances but I knew if i wanted to get my black belt I needed to commit to it. I had to go to every single lower-belt class and it was tiring, after that I started on perfecting my 5 kicks for graduation. Tornado kick, roundhouse kick,sidekick, reverse turn axe kick,and jump side kick. So i commited and came everyday and was finally ready for testing. During testing when i finished 4 of my kicks and i was on my final one jump sidekick. Sir grandmaster Atoun told me to jump over 4 people and in my brain I had self-doubt but he told me if I doubt you I'm going to hurt myself so i jumped in the air while the cameraman was taking pictures of me in the air and i broke my wooden board while not hurting myself. I got my black belt and was really happy that I got it after 5 years. In those 5 years, I had improved so much in taekwondo but not only in that in my daily life too .I'm so happy that I came to this dojo. Samuel Y

It's not just a belt to me - it is a symbol of all the hard work, and determination I've put in over the years. When I first started, I didn't know much about martial arts. I had a lot of admiration for the higher belts and the black belt students who I saw during belt promotions. But as I continued training, I realized it's about way more than just impressive moves. At USTA, they teach us to be strong not only on the outside, but on the inside too. I had to learn discipline, respect, and how to stay focused even when things get hard. There were times I wanted to give up, especially when I couldn't get a kick right. But my instructors, classmates, and family always encouraged me, and I kept going. The process of qualifying for my black belt has been super intense. I had to demonstrate excellence in everything I learned--forms, sparring, board breaking, and self-defense. I was anxious, but I am also ready. When I finally tie that black belt around my waist, I think it will feel like I can accomplish anything. For those who know me, I preached Kenpo. I was a 2nd Degree Brown Belt, and I was ready to test for…read more1st Degree at the time I was shelved. I just needed to polish my staff set. I had already stripe tested everything else. I put in dozens of hours volunteering. I was on payroll for a while as well, as an asisstant instructor in the sparring program. I *loved* sparring, and I *loved* teaching it. My constant gushing about Kenpo led several folks to either sign themselves or their children up. Last year I was diangosed with cancer and my doctors told me I needed to take a break. The owner told me to take care of myself and not to worry, they would be there for me when I was ready. Fast forward 9 months. My cancer was in remission and I was ready to return. When I reached out to the owner he told me he was excited to have me back, and told me I could come back at the "new member rate". I'll save you from a ton of math here, but the short of it is my kids and I attended for $391. This included unlimited classes, sparring, sticks, etc. The new rate would be $1200 a month for each of us to attend one class per week. When I expressed that this was out of my budget, he told me I could just end my daughter, and I could sit in the stands and "watch". At this point I reminded him that he had promised to hold my rate, and sent him screen shots of the conversation. I wasn't angry. I just wanted him to realize I wasn't asking for special treatment here. After 7 years of attending that school, when I was told I could return at that rate, I was shocked when he blew me off. At this point he basically just stopped responding to me. When i made a facebook post and tagged the the studio and explained what happened, he simply blocked me. His way of dealing with his lies is to block me and ignore me. After 7 years of considering that studio to be a part of my family. He is unhinged these days. He literally just posted about how one of the schools he workls with "doesn't understand him" because he told them he was going to put there account on hold due to low membership. They couldn't believe he would act this way after working with him for ovger 15 years, so they asked him to leave. All he cares about is money these days. Please stay away. This is not a place where you learn martial arts. This is a palce where you buy a belt, if you can afford it.
