I started researching schools in and around Plano, and after some time settled on Master Ahn's TKD. This is the oldest school in Plano, and Master Ahn has a very distinguished list of accomplishments that make him the best in the business. He's been a Junior olympics Texas/National coach, and is a certified Master from the official World Taekwondo governing organization. Master Ahn possess a wealth of knowledge, expertise, and his passion for the martial art is evident in every session. He strives to not just impart the technical aspects of the art, but also stresses on the importance of discipline and hard work. My son has learnt a lot in the 4 years that he has been here, and plans on continuing for the foreseeable future. I can see a marked difference from the time he started when he was 6 to now, and he's much more confident. He has learnt to value hard work, and knows that he needs to put in the yards to progress. This is something that is drilled into him in the classes. Kids do have a lot of fun (there are games in later half of the hour on some days), but are made to understand that come belt test time, there will be no easy marks. The taekwondo community there is very welcoming, and my son feels valued and respected. He has made several friends that he hangs out with even outside of the class. There are separate classes for adults and kids. There are adults who have been with Master Ahn for years, and they help out Master Ahn in training the kids at times. So whether one is a beginner, or a skilled individual looking to get back into the martial art, i'm sure they'll find a perfect fit. Overall i can't recommend Master Ahn highly enough. Highly recommended. Excellent school for martial arts. Our son joined Master Ahn's class [Plano] over 5 years ago when he turned 5. He has earned his first black belt and is working towards his second black belt. Master Ahn personally directs the classes himself and takes great personal interest in each of his students, which is very different from other centers. He is very strict when it comes to discipline in the class [we like it] while also having fun activities like dodge ball, which all kids seem to love. Master Ahn constantly encourages and challenges students to break boards with increasing harder kicks as kids progress and get better at kicks. He motivates students to improve their forms and kicks and not just go through the motions like a dance. The more interest and effort you put into his class, the more you get out of the class and him. Sparring is one of the highlights of the class and our kid loves it. During normal classes, students are taught to do forms and combination kicks. During sparring sessions, he directly monitors and guides the sparring to use these combinations in a safe way. Our son's sparring skills and confidence has dramatically improved over the years due to this class. Our son is more focused and disciplined due to this class. Our son [all kids in his dojo do] highly respects him and is constantly trying to improve his forms, kicks and sparring skills as guided by Master Ahn. I started studying at Ahn's Tae Kwon DO Institute at the age of 7 and continued until I graduated high school. Training there was by far one of the most formative experiences of my childhood. The martial arts instruction is superb. Master Ahn is accredited by Kukkiwon for teaching Tae Kwon Do, but instruction is not limited to just traditional forms. Students are also taught more self-defense oriented skills of grappling and boxing. Master Ahn knows how to push you much farther than you think you can go, but importantly knows when to stop before injury. In the 10+ years I trained there, I can count the number of injuries on one hand. However the school really shines outside the physical aspects. Master Ahn is an excellent mentor, role model, and friend that wants all his students to grow as a person. Many kids learn the value of discipline and hard work from his daily instruction. Unlike some schools, Master Ahn's does not just hand belt rankings. I have personally failed some of his belt tests. Although initially disappointing, when I actually passed I felt fulfilled knowing I possessed the martial skill and emotional maturity deserving of the rank. Kids don't always rise to what is required of them, what is needed to succeed, and what may be necessary to survive in their world. What I am amazed at is Master Ahn's ability to tap into every child's desire to succeed, and accomplish what is needed. He can reach the frail, beaten, and insecure, the pampered and indulged. He pulls from them what is required, what is expected of them. "What they must do." "They must reach inside and pull from within to accomplish, stand strong and defiant when facing strength. Master Ahn has perfected a curious combination of gruffness, speaking truth to every situation; be it criticism, instruction, or praise. Students learn to take criticism for what it is, a tool needed to achieve a goal, sometimes rising from failure, to achieve that goal. There is an understanding that doing what is demanded of oneself is expected. Proper form and order are essential. Yet it is not all that is required; desire, boldness, and savage determination to protect oneself are required at times. Students are taught to be kind, helpful, and encouraging to others, as well as to determine when a stronger, protective reaction is called for. I have been attending Tae Kwon Do since the age of five. Entering as a quiet and shy kindergartener, I came to class with my big brother to make new friends and try something new. Outstanding and authentic. My two oldest kids (11 and 8) have been attending this school for over a year and thoroughly enjoy it. Even their younger sister keeps asking when she can start class (youngest age allowed is 5, adult classes also offered). It isn't all loosey-goosey where the kids just run amok and play games for the whole class (like some other martial arts schools). Chun Ah's instruction is the best, hands down. He is a player coach and never asks his students to do anything he couldn't do himself. With the ideal balance between stretching, exercise, and practicing forms and sparring, students achieve discipline, technique and physical power, and all ages benefit from his teaching. Most of all, Master Ahn instills confidence with an emphasis on preparing his students for the outside world, both spiritually, scholastically, and with regards to self-defense. I highly recommend this school! Master Ahn is very knowledgeable and takes the time to thoroughly teach and perfect each student on an individual basis. There are many higher rank belts that also help with instruction so no one is left out. Everyone is treated with the same respect regardless of age or rank. Exercise is also part of the training to help condition the body along with the mind. The studio is very large with a fully padded floor and mirrors for form training. Bags, kicking pads, sparring equipment is available for everyone to use. This family oriented school is by far the best in Texas. Both of my children have been attending classes here for nearly 10 years. I took Tae Kwon Do at Ahn's Tae Kwon Do for about 5 or 6 years on and off, and Master Ahn is someone that cares about each one of his students.
