Unfair Treatment & Unethical Charges - Urgent Resolution Needed I feel completely taken advantage of by Master Kang's martial arts program. As a single mother of three, I was looking for a safe and reliable aftercare solution for my children. When I enrolled my 6-, 7-, and 8-year-olds, Master Kang promised me a "discounted price" and a "free uniform." However, I quickly realized that the hidden costs--belt tests, miscellaneous fees, and other unexpected expenses--added up significantly. From the start, I made it clear that I would be unable to stay in class with my children due to my work schedule. Master Kang assured me that they would be watched after their lessons. Yet, on multiple occasions, I arrived to find my 6-, 7-, and 8-year-olds outside the dojo, completely unattended and unsupervised. This was not only irresponsible but also dangerous. I trusted this program to provide structure and safety for my children, but instead, I found them running around unsupervised, putting them at risk. Another issue arose with the attendance stickers that are given out to eventually earn achievement medals. Since I wasn't present, Master Kang would hand these stickers directly to my children, who, as small kids naturally do, often lost them before I arrived. When I asked for replacements, he refused, saying they were "too expensive" because they were imported. How is it acceptable to deny a child a simple sticker, knowing they are young and likely to misplace it? This lack of compassion and flexibility was incredibly frustrating. Then, life took a turn. I lost my job and could no longer afford the program. I informed Master Kang and requested to cancel my membership, explaining that I had to move out of state. The school demanded proof of my move, so I provided a lease and a utility bill. However, they rejected my documentation over a minor technicality--listing my name at my new address still tied to my old driver's license. Despite my best efforts, they refused to accept even my utility start-of-service notice as valid proof. How was I supposed to provide a finalized bill for a future address before even moving in? This requirement is not only unreasonable but feels like an intentional barrier to keep charging me. Now, they continue to bill me, even though I have done everything in my power to prove that I have moved and can no longer attend. At this point, I feel deceived, exploited, and robbed in broad daylight. Where is the integrity? Where is the humanity? Master Kang is a businessman and a family man--yet he is treating a struggling mother with zero empathy, prioritizing profits over basic fairness. I am demanding that my membership be canceled immediately. I refuse to pay for a service I cannot use, especially one that has already failed to provide the safe environment I was promised. If this matter is not resolved, I will have no choice but to escalate this through consumer protection agencies, public reviews, and legal channels. I hope Master Kang and his team choose to do the right thing. BEWARE: Hidden 5-Year, $14,000 Contract & Predatory Cancellation Fees! We enrolled our child in the Black Belt program at MKMA, but she later decided she needed focus more on school. When we tried to quit, we were hit with a $3,167 cancellation penalty based on a contract we didn't realize we signed. My wife believed she was authorizing a month-to-month credit card payment, but it turned out to be 5-YEAR $14,000 CONTRACT with a 25% CANCELLATION PENALTY. These terms were not clearly communicated, nor were we provided a copy of the contract until we quit. The contract itself is disguised as a receipt with a lot of fine print and fails to disclose the full value as required by law (Texas Finance Code). PLEASE PROTECT YOURSELF: MKMA's process feels deeply deceptive, with important details buried in paperwork. What looks like a simple credit card signature on screen may actually be a binding multi-year financial commitment with severe penalties. We have membership at Allen location. This is the worst after-school experience we've had in the U.S. Belt tests happen every ~2 months and it feels like everyone passes regardless of skill. My kids didn't attend for 1.5 months, took about two weeks of classes, and still "passed." We kept hoping higher belts would mean stronger skills, but even seeing red belts didn't change our mind--this place doesn't build real technique. Discipline is lacking: Kids show up late, forget belts, wander in mid-class--no consequences, no accountability. Relentless upselling: Pushed a "Black Belt Program" with a 30-month commitment--hard pass. After reaching yellow belt, we were told we could attend sparring once a week. We bought sparring gear (quoted around $200 per child; they sell for $300+). Then we were told sparring classes cost an extra $60 per child per month. When we said we wouldn't do sparring, we learned kids can't belt test without it. "Board breaking" was another charge: ~$55 plus ~$5 per board pack, repeatedly. Every step seemed to have a surprise fee attached, often explained only after the fact. Cancellation headache: We were told "2 months' notice or 25% penalty." We chose the 25% penalty. Then came another surprise: they said we had a 1-year commitment, with 7 months left--so 25% of seven months × two kids. It felt like the rules kept changing to make leaving expensive. Bottom line: Get everything clear before you sign. Ask the thing I mentioned. Don't be rushed by "limited-time campaigns." Ask exactly what's required (sparring? board breaking?), what each item costs (gear, classes, test fees), and what the cancellation terms mean in dollars. This is a good school with Masters and Instructors who truly care for their students. Our son recently received his black belt from this school and we couldnt' be any more proud of him. I did want warn parents about the contracts. These are not yearly nor month to month, but the duration of the program (Black Belt & Master's) which would mean multiple years. Standard cancellation is 25% of the remainder of the contract. They are financially holding parent's responsible based on a commitment their child will make on pursuing a Black Belt or Masters Program. As we all know, children tend to change courses and want to try things over time, but be mindful of the potential cancellation charge you'll face should your child want to do something different. While we are glad they were able to work out a somewhat more reasonable cancellation charge, the contracts with this instituion are very one-sided and not favorable to parents at all. read more

I'm very disappointed and upset. Every time kids need to advance to a new belt there are fees involved, new gear to be bought and coaches keep persuading kids to sign up for the black belt program, which is a 5 year commitment at $250 usd per month. There are 4 ways to cancel the monthly commitment: 1. Move 25 miles away 2. Doctors notice that the child cannot train any more. 3. 2 months notification with payment 4. 15% of the remaining financial commitment. I tried canceling by sending email, even cancelled the credit card that they had on file and they got a hold of my new credit card number and charged my new card.
