In the earliest stages of training it is crucial to be able to trust the good intentions of your instructor. Grapplers with high levels of skill, talent, and experience can be found in every gym. For a higher belt to dominate a lower one is unremarkable; this does not indicate an effective teacher. The better measure of an effective teacher is a capacity to convey insight. This is precisely the kind of trust Tony inspires in his students at Corvo, by bringing the lesson to the level of his audience. Tony can roll on your level - he will meet you where you are. As an instructor, Tony can dominate a round with an advanced student twice his size, and then in the next round roll with a 4 year old - and in both cases maintain a deliberate level of mindful, calculated control to maximize that student's uptake of the material. You can watch a complex knot being tied a dozen times, but accurately reproducing that knot with your own hands requires redundant practice and long-term dedication. This analogy is imperfect though, for in a fight your best efforts are being undermined by opponent who is actively working to undo your knot while simultaneously tying his own. When your opponent is larger or more powerful than you, your primate instincts & intuitions are simply not sufficient. If you have not already made yourself intimately familiar with the right winning combination of knots, then you just won't know what to do in that crucial moment. Repetitive drilling is how you learn the knots, but this is not enough in itself. The goal is to develop your own autonomous capacity for winnowing down the chaos into a manageable set of inevitabilities. I am a Black Belt in BJJ and I've seen every kind of gym environment. This was one of my favorite training experiences. Tony is a great coach and person. Corvo Martial Arts is an amazing place to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. As a woman with very little-to-almost-no martial arts experience I was nervous but it was something I really wanted to try. Everyone is really welcoming from day one and I am learning so much every time I train with Corvo. I am honored to get instruction from Professor Diogo Araujo. Coach Tony is highly knowledgeable and patient. Coach Brandon is really good at helping guide me with positioning during drills and rolling especially when I get stuck in my head. These guys also go hard when you need an extra push. I highly recommend training here if you are new or if you are experienced because these guys cater to all experience levels. (My only complaint is it isn't seven days a week. But, hey, I guess my muscles need recovery days after rolling with Corvo. Ha!) Bonus: losing weight, getting lean and feeling strong. read more

I had an opportunity to train here while I was visiting my girlfriend during Spring Break. I called to inquire whether or not there was drop-in fee and Prof. Tony was very pateint and polite while he was on the phone with me. All he asked was for me to fill out their waiver form and leave them a review on Google and/or Yelp. They have a very spacious and nice facility. I participated in a small class (everyone was gone for Spring Break), but the rest of the students were very polite and greeted me. Prof Tony really knows his Jiu-Jitsu. He's very well spoken, concise with his instruction, and very patient. Especially with a white belt noob like me. The only reason I didn't give this place a 5 star rating is that I noticed that the mats were not cleaned or disinfected after class. I'm not sure if they were cleaned while I was changing or packing up my bag. Overall, I had a very good experience here and I would definitely drop by again. If you live in the Richardson area and need a place to train or if you need a place to drop-in and get your roll on. This is the place. Oss! read more
