The heater really cranked tho and did heat the place well, so that worked out. Not sure if I'd stay again tho based on the lack of cleaning.

Don't be fooled as it gets chilly and we saw lovely flurries the day before we left and a light snowfall overnight. There was a squirrel that greeted us when we first arrived pulling into the driveway. Never saw or heard anyone in the neighborhood. Easy Market was down the street for some canned Starbucks coffee and Iced Tea. We didn't cook our meals but ate out except for one lunch when we brought home pot pies from Pickles that took 90 minutes in the oven. We had a really good breakfast(pizza size pancakes) and dinner(prime rib) which we found on Yelp. The other meals were fine as it was hit or miss in a new place. We came decades ago and the development is amazing. Be sure to drive to the Village beyond Marshall's as there are more shops. We entered a pet store where I bought their version of nose and paw butter for my own fur Bebe. Found some gifts to bring home for the grand kiddies. We even went grocery shopping for ice cream for the pie slices from a bakery. The only let down was our reservations for a one and a half hour paddle boat tour was cancelled cuz they didn't reach their 15 passenger requirement. Not all the shops were open or even the donut place but we did see some wild donkeys. No other critters. Probably we came off peak season but thanks to Netflix and the big screen tv it was all good.

Our group of 17, including five kids ( 5 years and under), was looking forward to a relaxing weekend getaway in a cabin with beautiful views. What we got instead was a nightmare that started in the early morning hours of January 25, 2025. We checked in around 4:15 PM on January 24, full of excitement. But by 3:30 AM (Jan 25), we lost power. It was pitch dark, and we were left scrambling to find anything we could to make it through the night. With five young children, we decided to wait until morning to figure things out. The power briefly came back on, giving us a glimmer of hope, only to go out again by 8:30 AM. The hosts assured us the power would be back on soon, mentioning that "their church still had power." As if that somehow made it better. We decided to go into town, spending a few hundred dollars on food that was as mediocre as it was overpriced while dragging five tired, cranky kids along for the ride. Fast forward to us talking to the locals and the electric company, only to discover that this was a planned outage, which we were never told about. Had we known, we would have rescheduled our trip for another weekend. But no, we were told the power would be back by 3 PM. Spoiler: it wasn't. We returned to the cabin, still holding out hope, but by 5 PM, it was clear we were getting nowhere. Our texts to the hosts provided no help other than suggesting going back into town to go have dinner and saying "well our other guests are making the most of it." By 6:30 PM, we were freezing in a house with no heat, no light, and only one lonely candle the hosts kindly provided. We were sitting in our snow gear and still could not warm up! We realized we had to cut our trip short. All of our food was spoiled--hundreds of dollars down the drain. We had no choice but to pack up and leave, braving the mountain roads in fog so thick we could not see more than 75 ft ahead of us while also dealing with snow fall and some hail. The hosts tried to claim the storm didn't start until Sunday night in a response to another review, but we have dashcam footage and photos showing substantial snow on the ground Sunday morning. I have attached a video of the END of our hour and a half Drive down the mountain. This is when conditions became clearer. The first hour and 20 minutes of the drive down were 20x worse than the video. While we don't expect the hosts to control the power outage ( obviously) , the complete lack of communication, preparation, and empathy was downright appalling. No flashlights, no candles, and certainly no offer to make things right. We had to fight tooth and nail just to get $2,000 back from a $4,000 trip. So, we essentially paid $2,000 to have a cabin with power for less than 12 hours, watch most of our food go bad, and then make a dangerous drive down the mountain with crying kids in tow. What a vacation. Hosts/owners of the company respond with snide comments and are rude to anyone who gives them ANY criticism. You can see for yourself HERE and on the AirBnB reviews. Shows you more about their character than anything I can say. If you're looking for kind, responsible, considerate hosts and a place where you might actually get what you paid for, do yourself a favor and book elsewhere. This place? Not it. You've been warned.

The place was beautiful and I highly recommend this house for any group/family. It has a huge common area and loft for everyone to relax and a superb hot tub to help out your muscles after a long day on the mountain. The Cons: - Can't get the address until you are up in the mountains. I can only guess that this is the way Gary has always done things and he isn't comfortable with updating the process. He likes for you to call him along your drive up so that he can meet you, then personally take you to the cabin. It's easy enough, but made it where I had to communicate with the rest of my group after we got up there. Good thing we all ended up get cell service (something that has been a problem before). - Beds aren't that comfortable, but better than a lot of other places we had previously rented. - Ants, make sure that you keep your food in the fridge or zip lock bags. One thing to consider is that you have to pay the deposit upon arrival. They did return the fee to me just after the 2 weeks they promised, but it could be a problem if someone doesn't have a traditional credit card. This is the first time I have had to pay it up front. Otherwise, the house was awesome and Gary was very easy to work with. They even gave us a break on the linen rental and weeknight stay!

However, convincing a group of my (less outdoors-oriented) friends to chip in and commit to living in a tent for three days was a hefty proposition. So I found the middle ground and decided to rent a large cabin in Big Bear on the mountain. The Getaway was spectacular! When we arrived Gary (the owner) met me to give us a tour of the property and explain all the amenities. First things first- Gary had made sure the hot-tub was serviced and in top shape the day we arrived. That means all the chemicals had been changed, the jets had been checked, and the heating elements were fully functional. I mention this first for two reasons: 1) I've been relayed multiple stories of friends renting cabins and being promised hot tubs, only to arrive to a non-functional spa; and 2) The hot tub was the hit of the party! It can accommodate 4 full-size adults at a time and is covered from direct sunlight and rain. I bring up the rain because my group had the luck to arrive on a weekend of rain and thunderstorms (good thing we weren't deep in the National Forest!). However, the rain didn't spoil our trip in the slightest. We were able to do two days of rain hikes (with ponchos) that were a nice change-up from the usual Southern California climate (you really can't complain about the rain when it only happens two weeks a year). The rain kept us cool and hydrated, and the fresh, wet air through the trees was a refreshing break from the smells cooking on asphalt back in LA. We were a group of 10 and we were never wanting for amenities during our trip. Because of the rain we decided to spend our nights inside, though we cooked each meal on the unit's propane grill. The propane tank was filled and ready-to-go when we arrived, and the grill itself had enough space to cook for all ten people at once, plus room for extras. The game room was also a big hit. There was a bumper pool table and most importantly: foosball. Now I've never been a huge foosball guy (it's an expensive game to play in bars, always trading in your dollars for quarters) but I immediately became a huge fan of the game after being able to play on our own table. We did tournaments and teams and a round-robin with seeding... It was an unexpectedly amazing addition to the cabin's amenities. I guarantee that half the men of the party were in that room 40% of our stay. As per lodging, there were three really large, really well-decorated bedrooms on the bottom floor that I delegated to couples. Every couple was very happy with their sleeping arrangements. On the top floor is a master bedroom with an adjacent 1/2 bedroom with bunk beds. I gave the top floor to the single gentlemen of the group and they were all very happy with their quarters and the proximity to the game room. All-in-all we had a wonderful time at The Getaway, weather included. We would have like to spend more time at the lake (5 minutes away by car) but because of the thunder and lightning we didn't want to risk it. However, the Vons (also 5 minutes away) was there to provide everything we needed for the weekend, from food to grill to supplies for the hike to paper towels and condiments. We spent our weekend hiking during the days, relaxing in the hot tub and game rooms in the afternoon, and grilling and playing cards in the evening. There was ample room for everyone to sit and eat together (we wished we could have put the outdoor balcony bar to more use!) and no one felt excluded from the festivities due to space. I would highly recommend a stay at the Getaway! Everyone in my group left feeling happy and fulfilled, and for the price it just can't be beat! The summer-time 3-night deal (we stayed three nights at the same cost or less than the cost of most cabins for two nights!) is out of this world. Thanks again, Gary and Karen, for sharing your home!

As our trip got closer, the stay at home orders in California due to COVID got stricter and forbade staying at vacation rental properties. I called them to inquire about their cancelation policy and was told they were not canceling rental properties and were essentially going to ignore the state orders. That left us in a bind because we didn't want to break the law. After a heated conversation with the owner Ryan, he sent me an email that my reservation was canceled because they wanted to offer the place to someone else. He said I'd get a refund minus 5%. Our reservation was $7k, so 5% is almost $400. Keep in mind - I didn't give authority to cancel my reservation. He told me it couldn't be canceled, then sent me an email canceling it. He canceled my reservation, immediately rebooked it, and still charged me $400. You could literally create a business by booking and canceling people all day long. What a scam. Horrible customer service, unethical, breaking the law, and thieves. I've already reported them.
