We stayed at the Conklin cabin this weekend and it was perfect. We arrived at 530pm on a friday, the cabin was nice and cozy. 3bedroom and 2 bathrooms, upstairs were the first bedroom has a full size bed and lamp, the second bedroom has two twin size bunkbeds and a foosball table, and the third bedroom next to the upstairs bathroom has full size bed. Downstairs bathroom is right next to the laundry room and the back door that leads to the backyard. The cabin was complete with everything we needed for the weekend, and added plus is it had wifi. lol Over all experience was great! i will definitely come back and stay at Conklin or maybe try their other Cabin in the future. UPDATE** Okay, I have officially stayed at Grampa Mike's Conklin Cabin and.....absolutely everything, and then some, that I knew it'd be based on my interactions with Grampa Mike! The location is perfect!!! In the middle of the Village and Snow Summit, but secluded enough to feel the serenity of a vacation. The cabin itself was spotless and beautiful, and there are TWO hot tubs!! Plus, we didn't need to trek out to the Snow Play area because the backyard had a small hill we could sled down...we even saw others sledding down the street that the cabin is located on! Seriously couldn't have found a better place...it was meant to be:). Thanks to Grampa Mike, my boyfriend and I had the best intro to Big Bear...we hadn't vacationed in awhile, and this was just what we needed to get away from the hustle and bustle for a few days. I won't stay anywhere else...BESTEVER!!! read more

Myself and a group of friends rented the cabin on Balboa Lane during Presidents Day weekend. The cabin itself was beautiful! Two stories, a large front patio and balcony off of one of the bedrooms. It also has a large backyard (for renters with pets), a BBQ grill and a Jacuzzi! I want to mention that when I first looked at this cabin it was only through pictures via email from Mike so I was a bit worried about the size, but upon our arrival I was surprised at how large they are! Very spacious and comfortable. The owner Mike is one of the easiest and nicest people to work with. He gave us a great rate on the cabin and was always so prompt in returning calls, e-mails and text messages. He truly does everything in his power to ensure you enjoy your stay! PROS: First of all yelpers, do not be skeptical of all 5 stars because Grampa Mike deserves every single star! My experience was nothing but perfect. At first I was also skeptical because it was off of craigslist (esp the security deposit) but I was only met with exceeded expectations. G. Mike was willing to do everything to make the transaction as comfortable as possible. Pay with check or credit. I stayed for 2 days for my birthday weekend with a couple of my friends. The Spa was ready to use at 104 degrees (exactly what we had discussed via email) and the cabin was recently remodeled with a new refrigerator and everything. There were fresh towels, linen, and dishes and pots. (few pots but it did the job. if you're planning to cook a lot bring an extra pot). very CLEAN! Getting in contact with G. Mike was easy and comfortable. He is easy to talk to and is very thorough with his contract. He even was accomodating when I told him that I was a student and hard on money (though this was due to special circumstances). Security deposit was received in less than a week of departure date. My friend even left something at the cabin and it was actually mailed to us in LA!! I LOVED it!!!! NOT CONS but things to consider: The cabin on conklin is perfect for no more than 7 people because there is no pull-out couch. We had exactly 7 so it was perfect! Parking was limited. Super clean and well done. Grampa Mike is also an honest guy with his own dogs. He really ended up seeming like a family friend after numerous emails back and forth and texting regarding the cabin. He was extremely flexible with changing plans and genuinely interested in our vacation plans. I stayed in the cabin on Balboa Lane. It is GORGEOUS. You can definitely tell that they put a lot of time and effort into it. Other cabins over-do the bear theme, but this cabin is very tasteful and modern. The bedding is so soft and clean. They have everything you could need in the way of kitchen utensils and the fireplace is in the perfect location so that you can lay on the couch and let your feet dangle over the side next to the warm fire. The hot tub is amazing and the view is so nice. Even the neighbors are nice. The driveway is a little steep, so be careful and there is a gap between the ground and the fence next to the shed, so don't plan to leave your dog outside during the day if he/she tends to follow other animals out of the yard. I've stayed in other cabins in Big Bear that were more expensive and gross. I'm convinced that this guy is the best find in cabin rentals up there. He even advises on pizza delivery places and other stuff if you just ask. I can't wait to stay there again. read more

Grandpa Mike is the real deal! I rented the cabin on Conklin Ave and couldn't be more happy with my weekend stay. The cabin was clean, well organized and made for a great home away from home. There was a great Jacuzzi tub in the backyard that exceeded our expectations and Mike was a true pleasure to deal with. His rates were very affordable, there were no hidden fees and our entire deposit was returned. Mike turned out to be a real genuine guy that bent over backwards to make sure our stay was pleasant and enjoyable. He was extremely punctual with any questions we had and was on the ball when it came to our needs. For example, the previous renters forgot to return the spa key and Mike was extremely helpful in getting us a replacement as soon as possible. All this, with one of the biggest storms of the year hitting big bear, closing down business's and roads. All in all, Mike really did feel like our Grandpa by the end of our stay. A group of friends and I headed up to Big Bear for a winter getaway and boy am I glad we went with Grandpa Mikes. I have no complaints whatsoever. We stayed at the Balboa cabin for a weekend in December. The cabin was beautiful and clean. It was a winter wonderland! We used the fire place, hung out, cooked, played board games, watched movies. Looking out the awesome windows we could see the snow all around. It even snowed while we were there. We loved the cabin so much that we barely even left the cabin the whole weekend. There was so much snow, it was so pretty! Such a relaxing trip. We also made good use of the hot tub in the back porch. Surrounded by snow and trees, it was the best! I stayed at Grandpa Mike's Conklin property with my husband while he was home on a break from Afghanistan. We wanted a quiet cabin in the woods, and that's exactly what we got. Big Bear was clear of any snow while we were there, but there was plenty to see and do. And it was still cold enough to use the cozy fireplace. First thing's first-Conklin is a very cozy cabin, perfect for a small group of friends or family of 8. There's an awesome deck with a table and bar-b-que out back-amazing in the summer for sure. The jacuzzi out back was warm and clean...it's also got colored lights you can turn on at night! The kitchen was stocked just enough pots and pans for basic cooking-but if you decide to go Rachel Ray out there you'll need to supply your own stuff. Since there were only two of us, we closed the doors to the other rooms so the house heated up quicker. Those floors get cold, so bring slippers! The Conklin cabin has tons of cabinets all throughout the house for storage. Some of the closets connect to other bedrooms, which I thought was interesting. We slept in the bedroom closest to the upstairs bathroom(which was kinda cramped-but that's just the way the house was designed). The bedding was lovely and warm, however it could probably use a newer mattress. Back to the kitchen-there are no curtains or blinds in the kitchen window, so anyone could see right in at night. We felt a little uneasy about that, due to our military/law enforcement background. All the other windows have blinds or curtains, so you still maintain privacy in other parts of the house. Another thing-on either side of the fireplace are bins for storing firewood so you don't have to go outside to retrieve wood. Very convenient! The location is amazing...you're right up the street from El Pollo Loco and a Big Five Sporting Goods. The village is about a mile or so away, and there's a winery you can walk to. Big Bear does get flooded with tourists on weekends, so be prepared for hordes of city folk at the Vons, standing around saying, "I can't believe they don't have __________!" Vons has plenty, by the way. We had no problem with essentials, and people in Big Bear are very accommodating and kind. All in all, we loved the cabin and want to come back in the summer. It was a lovely time with peace and quiet. The cabin was on point-five stars for Grandpa Mike and his staff, contractors, everyone! read more

Grandpa mike is so nice when you talk to him on the phone or text him. 2.) The price of the cabin is way better than I could find. 3.) The place is spotless, very clean.. I could sleep on the floor clean. 4.) Hot tub is nice! 5.) Rooms are spacious, all heaters are working. 6.) Very close to everything such as the summit, alpine tubing and big bear discovery 7.) Basically everything we need is there...great appliances and furnitures Although we didn't see a lot of snow, it was a great experience spending quality time with family in a nice environment. I can't even say enough good things about our experience staying at the Conklin cabin. We arrived on the 4th of July and checked out on the 7th. First impression was that everything is well taken cared of. It's clean and really well stocked. It was very spacious for our family of five. Since it was our first time staying there we packed a lot of home essentials. We ended up not needing it because they have everything. The only thing missing is an iron and ironing board. I just threw in the dryer for a few minutes and that took care of that problem. I'll try to describe room by room. I took plenty of pictures so hopefully it gives you a better idea of what to expect. KITCHEN: the kitchen itself has plenty of space. The refrigerator is a really good size and I loved that it has a water and ice dispenser. The four burner stove with oven had plenty of space for me to cook our meals. I loved the kitchen sink. It made it easier to do the dishes. It didn't even matter that there isn't a dishwasher. The cupboards have everything for 8 people. You really don't need to pack any kitchen supplies. Fyi, don't leave any piece of food anywhere. You'll have tons of ants. BATHROOMS: We mostly used the downstairs bathroom since it's a little bigger. The water pressure was perfect. Do take all your toiletries. There were some rolls of toilet paper and hand soap. The towels were large. BEDROOMS: the beds are very comfortable. There are plenty of blankets and pillows. There aren't any tv's in the bedrooms but we didn't mind that either because we all got to be together in the living room. We were able to keep the windows open in all the bedrooms during the night. The master bedroom closet is the only one that has a pole to hang clothes but the other closets are very big. FAMILY ROOM: the couch is comfy. There was plenty of space for all of us to watch a movie at night. Which there were free movies on the on demand channel. The fireplace was super relaxing and comforting. Take your own duralogs. There's enough lighting throughout. It gets a little bit hot but just open the windows and you get a nice breeze. There are two small fans in the upstairs closets. There are five dining chairs which for us was plenty. OUTSIDE: we had most of our meals outside. The view and sounds of nature are incredible. Up on the balcony feels very private. It's a really big back yard. Everything is within walking distance. We walked to the lake and the village. The neighbor is super friendly! She came over and introduced herself. We did had a great stay here but the owners of the cabin accused my family of leaving a mess when we checked out. We woke up early to make sure we cleaned up the dishes, drying them and putting them away. Wiping down the tables and picking up any trash and putting them into the trash bags. Yes we did not take them out because we totally forgot which was wrong on our side AND it was only 1.5 bags full not 3 as we were accused. But saying we left a pile full of dishes in the sink was over exaggerating! It was such a great experience but having to hear what the owners said about us just turned it upside down. If you're ok with getting bad responses about your stay at their property then this is the place for you. Make sure you follow their rules when you're trying to be on vacation. read more

I just got home from a 3 day stay at one of Grampa Mike's cabins. My family and I stayed at the Conklin property and I was amazed how immaculate and nice everything was. From the beginning of the reservation to the last day of our stay, Grampa Mike was the friendliest person ever, and arrangements were made with ease. Very efficient and gives you detailed info you need. I loved the Conklin cabin,it was very spacious, my kids especially loved the backyard which is perfect for snow play as it has a small hill to sled down. Property is pet friendly with fence in backyard which was a huge plus for us bringing our dog. Location is very easy to get to and off of Big Bear Blvd. (about a mile away from the Magic Mountain Snow play area) where we usually like to hang out at during the day when we go to Big Bear. Let me not forget to mention the great jacuzzi in the backyard that we totally took advantage of and got to relax in. Rental prices are excellent and very affordable! We went with my family and some friends to balboa cabin on February 15th. Grampa Mike was and he is very professional and nice he provided us a lot of good information about all the places we could visit with our kids to have more fun. Our children enjoyed the jacuzzi a few minutes too obviously with a low temperature, adult supervision and the safety recommendation to use a jacuzzi. We just stayed in Big Bear and Grandpa Mike has really done a wonderful job with his cabins. We got to see Conklin and Balboa and they are beautifully decorated and have nice, tall fences for those traveling with dogs! There are games for the kids and lots of books (if you have time to sit and read!) There is a fire place, central heat as well as space heaters so you do not have to worry about being cold at night. My kids did not want to leave after our two night stay. Big Bear is just beautiful in the Fall! I like that where was a private a place to park, the tv is large and there are many channels with shows and movies to watch, the place was clean, the private hot tube was already heated up, the beds were comfortable, the neighbors were quiet, great fire place, nice bbq, nice property with forest view just minutes from the village. We stay in the Conklin cabin the beginning of November and couldn't have been happier. The location was perfect. I love the ease of check in and out and not feeling like we were being watched while enjoying our vacation. The yard was very large and was nice for the kids to run and play. This past weekend, we stayed in Grandpa Mike's Balboa Cabin. It was perfect! Grandpa Mike is very nice, easy to get a hold of, and even let us check in early without charging any extra fees. The location was easy to find, and close to the Village, Alpine Slide, slopes, and stores, but secluded enough to actually feel like you are in a cabin in the woods. The deck outside was huge, and the hot tub was nice and hot when we got there, and very clean. The bbq and picnic table made it perfect to cook out there. The kitchen was a good size, and fully stocked with everything you need to cook with. The rooms were very spacious and clean, and even had extra blankets in them. All the heaters worked, and warmed up the cabin very quickly. The living room was very comfortable and spacious, and the cable, WiFi, Wii, and dvd player were a nice luxury to have while away from home. We stayed at The Conklin Cabin at the end of October 2013. The cabin was very well taken care of and we had a wonderful time. We also went and looked at The other cabin that Grandpa Mike has, and it too is very nice. Everything inside was clean. We only had a few minor complaints. The kitchen light bulb and porch light were both burnt out. The outside patio and table had not been cleaned and we had to wipe it all down before we could use it. The biggest issue was that the heater was not working and it was quite cold! Fortunately, my brother-in-law was able to go beneath the cabin and light the pilot and then the heater worked. Also, the beds were not very comfortable. The cabins are reasonably priced and we would stay there again. Grandpa mike was readily available by text and always responded promptly. read more

My friends and i stayed at balboa for the whole weekend and we lived it. The place was perfect. Close by the stores, the summit, and bear mountain!! The cabin was clean, board games and computer games were provided.The cabin was perfect. Also grampa mike was very patient and flexible with us.. We had difficulty with our financial issues and he helped us and was very lenient with the group. And whats even better?? Instead of The usual check in at 3 pm and check out 12 noon.. I am a single mom that signed up to take my son, dog and 3 other kids with me during Spring break - April 2012. I had the cabin all week, and we had a fantastic time! The accomidations couldn't have been any better! Price was certainly affordable, and Grandpa Mike was very patient with me while I had to make sure I wasn't being scammed (I work title insurance so yes the 101 questions, he answered and I confirmed with no probs). So first off he allowed us to check in early and check out late, since the cabin was available, I thought that jesture was super cool! Finding the place was simple, loved the neighborhood that was definitly country enough for us, yet wasn't deserted! The Kitchen was perfect, didn't ever think that I forgot something or needed to go buy something as far as kitchen equipment! He even had measuring cups! :) The space was perfect, we even had a bedroom that was basically untouched since I decided to sleep on the comfy couch... hehe... dont tell the kids they would have wanted to sleep there too! :) We did have a "fight" for the bunk beds, since they were so very cool. The pictures do not do justice, they really have "in the woods" feel. The spa was a life saver for me and the kids, since the first day was all me teaching them all how to snowboard, theyre behinds were sore by lunch time.... so what did we do?? of course went to the cabin sat in the hot tub and .... yep went back to the mountain to finish the first day of snowboarding- and that was Big Bear for day one... so we were that close. The second day was all summit, which we probably could have walked to.... but didn't! not with all our gear. So location PERFECT!! Went to the local lazer tag/ bowling hang out, down town village, and visited the lake. Again, LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!! Living room was perfect as long as the dog didn't try to rule the world, but the accomidations even for the dog were amazing, little dog house and HUGE back yard for him to sniff and run, and enjoy the new surrooundings as well. Bathrooms were great, everything was great!!! There was a couple times that I did call Mike, and now I dont remember why.... remember single mom, maybe I couldn't start the fire...lol... but during my stay he was always available and very helpful!! Washer and Dryer were a life saver by the way! Mike, I will be back next year, hopefully with a partner or at least another adult...lol... but we will certainly be staying with you and your cabins!! This is our 2nd stay at Grampa Mike's Conklin Cabin. It is a very clean, cozy cabin with everything you need at your fingertips. Grampa Mike is awesome to do business with, offering flexibility of extended check in/out hours if no new guests are checking in or out. He literally makes himself available on a constant basis during your stay via cell phone or text. Once you make reservations, grampa Mike gives you a bunch of literature on great restaurants, things to do, stores & shopping close by and different directions to the cabin depending on where you are coming from. We were lucky enough to get the 1st big snow of the season, in the first weekend in March, 2014! You can bring your own sleds and go no further than the front or backyard for snow play for kids of all ages all day long. The Cabin conveinantly has a washer and dryer. We would take snack breaks from snow play in the backyard and dry all the snow gear in the dryer and start all over again. The kids can't wait to go back. It is a comforting feeling to know you can check into a safe, clean cabin with a reliable owner, rather than a large company you're not familiar with. Grampa Mike's Cabins exceeded expectations. Upon arrival everything was clean and tastefully arranged. I was a bit apprehensive renting the cabin from someone I didn't know from Craigslist, but everything turned out better than I could have imagined. The cabin we rented had a really nice hot tub which felt nice on our tired bones. Also it is worth mentioning that I received a full refund of my deposit after leaving the cabin. Stayed in the Conklin. Very rustic yet with modern amenities. Would def stay here again. The Conklin is very big and can sleep 12 very comfortably if needed. It's near the end of a cul de sac and there is very little vehicle traffic out front. It's also situated far from the main road where you don't hear any traffic but close enough where you can go into town and it not be a journey. read more

my family stayed at the Conklin property the weekend of Feb 8-10 and we absolutely loved our stay. This was our first time with our kids in big bear and it could not of been more perfect. It snowed so the kids ages 7-10 enjoyed sledding and playing in the backyard. My 14 yr old loved challenging us to a game of foosball. The location was close to everything including snow summit. We even got in the jacuzzi at the end of our day. The property was very clean and spacious. The best part of my experience was working with Grampa Mike. The Five Stars goes to Mike...and almost that many for the Conklin property. In all my years of renting, or dealing with renting, I simply have not come across anyone as wonderful as Mike. He was in total contact from the first phone call, texting us constantly during the stay to make sure everything was okay. My girlfriend and my other girlfriend, my dog, whom Mike openly welcomed, stayed at the Conklin cabin in September for my birthday. The cabin itself was very nice, with all the amenities listed, and it was really close to the Village and other great hangouts...although you would never know it, as it felt fairly secluded. Everything was very clean and well stocked. Conklin is not the Ritz Carlton, but it is like every other mountain vacation home that I have been in, including my own family's...cozy and well stocked with games, books, and of course that much needed Wifi...LOL. Last week, my partner, my dog, and I stayed at the Conklin Property. I would definitely recommend this cozy place to anyone for several different reasons. Grandpa Mike offered up good customer service from the beginning and was very easy to deal with over the phone. The place has a real cozy feel, and smells like a mountain cabin should when you walk in the door, yet it has everything you need to make you feel at home. This place would be awesome for a family ski vacation or a laid back summer fling. There is a nice comfortable couch to lounge and watch a movie on, but if the tube is not your thing, there is also a fireplace and board games. What really made the place for us, was that there is an awesome hot tub, which throws jets in all the right places, and we were allowed to have our dog who enjoyed playing in the fenced backyard. I was glad I found Grandpa Mike's on Yelp as it was quite a good bang for the buck, and much better than anywhere else for the price. We stayed in Grandpa Mike's Balboa Cabin the weekend of 4/25 for a family trip. It was perfect! If you read all the reviews you get a perfect picture of what to expect. It's all true! Grandpa Mike IS very nice, easy to get a hold of, and even let us check in early and leave late without charging any extra. The location was just a couple of minutes from everything, but away from busy roads. The deck and hot tub were awesome, and yes, hot and clean. The living room, kitchen, bedrooms were all spacious and cozy and comfortable, and the cable TV, WiFi, Wii, and DVD player were great and gave all the different ages in our group a way to really enjoy the cabin together. With three decks it was great to get a coffee, pick a view and sit and relax and enjoy the outdoors. The washer and dryer were also a great extra I hadn't thought about when we had the sudden snow day, very handy. G. Mike's gets my first Yelp review because I highly recommend!
