Wow. Tiny place on the side of the road in Thoreau- no dining in, but you can walk in to order. The burgers range from 1/4 pound to a full pound, toppings are the basics, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion, and you can add green chile and/or bacon. Fries were super fresh and really good. Burgers were SO GOOD. And the people were insanely kind and sweet. They bring it all out to your car, packaged individually for everyone and labeled. Honestly, this place doesn't look like much from the outside but it's worth your money! I've passed by BAB multiple times since I was in the area for a few weeks and finally decided to try it out during my last week and I was not disappointed! It's a small takeout place where you go in to order, and then the order is brought out to your car once it's ready. There were so many options in terms of sizing (I think ranging from 1/4-2lb). A combo comes with a burger, fries, and a drink and it's decently priced. The burger is seasoned, juicy, and flavorful. We have been driving from Tennessee to California, which is home. We decided to stop here for a quick lunch. Honestly, it was because of the catchy name! Big Ass Burgers. A short drive off of route 40. The burgers are so big and delicious. Very flavorful. The fries are spiral and crispy. My hot dog was good as well. This is take out with car service. Not sure I see what the hype is about. Yes, the burgers are big in the sense that it's a 1/2lb patty that is smashed to CD thickness. This means the burger is about twice the width of a standard burger. But as someone else pointed out, the ratio of meat and toppings to bun is just off. Way too much of everything besides meat (bread in particular) for this to work. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that the meat is dry and pretty tasteless. Yes, you could get a double, but I don't want to eat a pound of burger meat. a 1/2 lb is already plenty. So figure out the ratios that this works, even if that means making the burger smaller (i.e. two 1/4 lb smash patties and a standard size bun instead of one the size of a dinner plate). So meh on the burger, frankly. The fries are a soggy greasy mess. They aren't twice fried so the are just floppy and oily, even if the flavor is decent. A floppy fry just don't fly! Anyway, for where it is (the middle of the middle of nowhere), it's fine. But it's nothing to write home about. Oh, and their ventilation system clearly doesn't work so the air inside the place is a fog of grease. I wouldn't not want to see what's happening to the lungs of the employees. read more

Went by after church today. Sat down and waited for 15 minutes and no one waited on us. No, they were not that busy and yes they knew we were there. I heard one employ tell another employ that they had a table for two and looked right at us. The employ ignored us and started cleaning tables on the other side. We tried to be patient but 15 minutes is to long to wait without any acknowledgement that you are there and they plan on serving you. We stopped into Big Ass Burger on our way back from Albuquerque to Arizona. We'd seen the sign on the 40 the prior week but couldn't get in touch by phone. The thought of the Big Ass Burger never left us. We stopped and to our great surprise, they were open!! The owners were working and were really nice people. We ordered a Hugh Ass Burger this bad boy comes with 2lbs beef, 6-8 pieces of bacon, 6-8 slices of cheese we also added green chili's. Of course, all of the usual burger add-ons were included. This thing was so big and beautiful not to mention the smell!! We decided to wrap it and take it home. As I was placing the coveted Huge Ass Burger in the trunk the odors wafting up into my olfactory lobes caused a fierce hunger from deep down inside me. I turned to my wife and said "let's go back in and get a snack!" We went back in and chose a Hot Ass Burger. This one was 1lb I believe, with lots of wonderful spicy jalapenos, YUM, cheese, and the usual add-ons. My wife and I snacked on this wonderfully flavorful burger at every fuel and rest stop back to Arizona. No, I didn't forget about the Huge Ass Burger in the trunk.
