Ordered Asada Fries (cooks in the back joking about just throwing some onions on top) forsure a discriminatory cafe, don't go if possible. Main cook didn't even try to hide how he felt when I walked in, looking angrily at me, yet openly laughing, smiling and talking about playing with my food when he looks away, he then threw my food on the serving counter with the lid open. They refused to give me a refund and acted like this was a regular plate instead of just getting me a new plate or getting me a refund. The carne asada breakfast burrito was calling to me. Unable to resist, I placed my order. Out came the mother of all breakfast burritos! Just see the picture. I had it Christmas (red & green chili) style. The green chili is superb! Just the perfect amount of flavorful heat. The red sauce was good, I just preferred the green. Outside of this place looks nice. Food is ok. Service sucks. I ordered a fajita burrito and a small coke to go. The girl asked if I wanted any sauce on the side. I said yes. The older came to $17. I gave her a $20 and told her to keep the change. 15 minutes later I went and picked up the order. When I got to the car, the side of sauce was not in the bag. I ran back in the store and asked her for the side of sauce. She says, "sorry I didn't charge you for that. Would you like me to charge you now?" I told her I left my wallet in the car. She says sorry. I asked if they have any hot sauce? She says only in bottles if you dine inside. None to go. Seriously? They're that cheap that she couldn't just give the sauce and was going to make me run back to my car? And to make matters worse, the burrito wasn't even that good. Such a great find on our road trip! Nice staff, friendly and casual place. You can sit and dine in but we took it to go. Ordered fry bread which was delicious, crisp and soft on the inside, French fries and then the bean and cheese burrito - very filling, hot and delicious. They had a nice gathering of customers and really cool vibe of old photographs to check out of historical local Travelers and miners, the town itself. You won't be disappointed if you stop by. So many things went wrong here. The food was completely bland, with no seasoning at all. The rice was so dry it had hard pieces, and the beans were just as bad. The asada had no flavor, was overcooked, and dry. When I ordered a Coke, the cup was packed with ice to the point where I could see right through the drink. I also asked for salsa and limes on the side, but even after my food arrived, I was still waiting. I had to get up and ask for it myself, only to later find out I was charged extra for the salsa. The café looks like it has been around for a long time, with vintage photos on the walls, but unfortunately, the food quality does not make it worth dining in. If you decide to eat here, I'd recommend checking your receipt before paying. Personally, I wouldn't recommend this place at all. read more

Have been making some trips to Grants and tried this place in a travel center. One of my favorite things is Carne Adovada, kind of a New Mexico specialty. Got the burrito ala carte and was excellent, and a good price. Sometimes the adovada can be overcooked but this was very moist with a nice spicy sauce. And the green Chile was excellent also. Milan, NM is a very small town with very few options for dining. A restaurant could be considered great if they just did the basic things right to have repeat business. I asked the waitress if the food was not ready, I would pay for the coffee and leave. She instructed someone to charge me for the cup of coffee. I paid and left. I was pleased beyond my expectations! We were dropping through Milan after visiting Chaco and wanted to stop Into the WOW diner. Alas it is closed, very sad, another story from COVID times, I'm sure. So we went to the Kiva. I've always loved the gift shop, fun for looking around and taking a break from driving. Our first visit into the restaurant. We had BLT's and they were amazing. Five think bacon strips, fresh lettuce and tomato, on grilled Texas toast. Very simple, very yummy. I saw lovely Mexican plates coming out to others, we will try that on our next visit. Had to stop at one more spot on our way out of New Mexico. Gallups places would be closed by the time we got there and this was literally our only option on the Sunday afternoon after the new year. We always got a combination plate: Enchilada, taco and chili relleno. We love chili rellenos! Christmas. Came with beans, rice and we choose the Sopapillas. We both ordered the taco and enchilada with seasoned ground beef. The taco was the smallest served yet. Seemed smaller than a street taco shell. Turns out it was one of the better tasting ones on the particular trip to NM. The enchilada was very good. Filled with ground beef and Christmas, (red and green sauce,) tasty! The chili relleno was outstanding! Cooked perfectly, stuffed with cheesy goodness and that Christmas sauce... no joke, excellent. The pinto beans were very flavorful, delicious! I thought the Sopapillas were decent. My partner said she thought it was the best of the trip. This is part of why we order the same, so we can report to you a difference in opinion. Now the 1 star reduction... otherwise it would be a 5 star. The rice was the worst we had tasted. It tasted like a box of generic Rice-a- Roni.... That had been in the cupboard since the 1970's. It was cooked to the right texture but that seasoning was very sad. It needs serious help. Nothing about it added to the meal. All that being said, I do recommend this place. The girls were nice. Awesome flavors!! Exactly what I wanted ! We got a combination platter with taco, chili relleno, and chicken enchilada. Hubs got carne adovado and stuffed sopapillo . It was alot but we wanted to try a few dishes. It does pack a little heat and thats why they bring honey. This is Authentic food and we loved it! If you stop to get gas and you are hungry come here! We were driving through, been on the road 10 hrs by this point. The cafe has plenty of seating and is right next to an amazing gift shop. The food was was pretty good! There is certainly a good amount of spice to everything. The chips and chili con queso is a green chili salsa type with shredded cheese in it. It was okay. Nothing to brag about. The salsa was good! But just shredded cheese in it was weird to me. I expected it to be...a cheesy saucy with chili in it, not the other way around. The pozole was delish (to me)! But- but too spicy for someone who doesn't want spice (my son). The Indian taco left something to be desired...not sure what. Maybe it had too much chili? Is that possible? Ha! I enjoyed it-but wouldn't order it again. My husband order a combo plate, the chili relleno had no filling. It was a chili, dipped and fried, but when cut open-there was nothing in it. Came here on recommendation for a place that serves Navajo tacos and fry bread. Driving through NM and not finding any I figured we'd better ask someone. Turns out the street venders are a weekend thing and being a Wednesday we might not run into any. This place was friendly and they delivered on the FRYBREAD it was chewy warm crispy and full of love. Took a chance today eating here. Walked in during the lunch rush. Tables were dirty and the lady at the cash register told us to sit wherever. We chose an empty table which wasn't clean. Waitress came over after 10 minutes with menus and took our drink order. We placed our food orders once she came back with our drinks. We waited 15 minutes for chips and salsa to arrive at our table and about another 50 minutes for our entrees to arrive. The food was delicious and came to our table hot. After the lunch rush had calmed, tables were cleared and the atmosphere was calmer than what we walked into earlier. The service was so slow taking over 45 minutes to get our food - 3 crisp tacos and a taco salad! He had the sausage breakfast burrito and had it smothered, Christmas style. There was sausage throughout the burrito and the sauce was so yummy. The red had a little kick to it. I had the Kiva breakfast special with eggs, hash browns, sausage and I opted for the tortilla rather than toast. The eggs were perfectly sunny side up and the hash browns were good and crispy. Now for the sausage. It was 4 links and it had a slight crunch on the outside and a snap to it when you bit into it. SO good! Our waitress was great - attentive and friendly. I rarely give bad reviews. I like my reviews to remind me of great meals and great experiences. But this one was such a disappointment. It's a fairly large restaurant attached to a convenience store. In theory, they serve New Mexican food as well as American food. My husband ordered a chicken and cheese quesadilla that did have a lot of shredded chicken. But no flavor whatsoever. The salsa at the table was OK. The chips were stale. I ordered a taco salad. The best part of the taco salad was the bowl. I think that might've been fresh. It was filled with unseasoned hamburger meat and flavorless Pinto beans. And a smattering of shredded lettuce on the top. The guacamole was served on the side for both of our dishes, and again had almost no flavor. The Coke was nearly flat, and worse, it was overpriced at $3.50/glass. The hostess and waitress were nice. The bathroom was sparkling clean. We love the New Mexican flavors. We thought in this small town, such a big restaurant must know how to do New Mexican cuisine. This cafe was part of the Chevron gas station and convenience store building. They had some interesting decor with a cloud-painted ceiling and old-timey photos on the table tops. The waitress was friendly but a bit scattered. She seemed to get easily sidetracked and took a bit to bring our food out even though it was sitting in the window for a while. I ordered the grilled cheese sandwich with creamy tomato soup (only served on Sundays). I also got a side of fried okra that came with ranch dressing. The okra tasted very good and was cooked just right. The tomato soup was very chunky with tomatoes and tasted nice and creamy, but was a bit too big of a portion. The only bad thing was the grilled cheese came with American cheese. I would have preferred a cheddar or swiss option. My husband had a Mexican menu item that came with chips and fresh salsa that tasted good. The salsa was a bit spicy, but still good. read more
