Ashland is weird in the fact that it is a college town but still primarily driven by tourism... Which means a ton of good places to eat, but not necessarily the college student budget friendly places you see in other college towns... Big Al's fills part of this void... Look, it's not an elegant dining experience, it's a good size meal at pretty low price that happens to be pretty darn good! The older Hispanic owner is a funny dude, smiling and having just a great time with his customers! Again, it's not elegant but it blows away those missing cooperate chains that you won't see in Ashland... and honestly you don't need em anyway while Big Al's is filling bellies from the richy rich people up on the hill all the way down to the broke college students from SOU and everyone inbetween! I'm rating Al's a high 3... The burger was pretty basic, the cheese needs to be a little more melted before hitting the dining room but was good, the veggies are good, the bacon was spot on, the bun was good, and the condiments are pretty basic... The fries and tots are extra crispy and golden like you would expect, and the fry sauce was legit! The wait time was a little long, but there were people ahead of us... This little restaurant is a little out of the way and it doesn't have all flashy lights or anything but Big Al's is definitely the place to go if you are hungry for some good burgers. Plus it is very affordable, spent less than 20$ for a full meal and a drink. The inside of the place is very cozy and inviting. Not to mention the customer service was great, the man who took our order, Brian, was very friendly and made sure he got our orders exactly as we wanted it. - My first visit to Big Al's was laced with hopes and my fingers crossed that it would be good, since it is so close by our house. The actual first impression I had, however, was that upon entry the building was more than a bit Smokey. Enough to make my eyes burn a little, after eating there awhile. - We have consistently been greeted by who we think is the owner, Arturo. I don't think Big Al, the person, is there any longer, but Arturo (who is not very big), is there to greet customers cheerfully. We really liked that he seemed to genuinely care about his customers by coming out and engaging with the crowd and making sure everything was done right. I like how he develops rapport with the clientele. - Big Al's has a number of different choices, and perhaps therein is one of the highlights. Whether you want a burger, mexican food, or a deli sandwich, you have several choices to make. - My recommendation would be to lean toward the Mexican food, or one of the burgers. That seems to be the sweet spot at Big Al's, based on the several times we have visited. - Once I did order the Pastrami sandwich, which has to be one of the biggest you'll ever eat. But, size is not really an indicator of being the best. The meat was a little stringy, and it was hella messy (do people still 'hella'? No? Well, I'm bringing it back then), but the quantity was definitely there if that's your thing. For me - stick with the Mexican Food. - I think other reviews have dinged the fries, which seem to be of the frozen krinkle-cut variety, a la Ore-Ida. I agree that this is a lowlight here, even if the quantity is plentiful. - We had a shake at Big Al's, and I can say that they do that right proper. We love their fries and fry sauce & the family that owns it and the servers, are so personable and endearing... yet the last few months that we've visited there.. it seems like they have changed their beef patty's. Before they were juicy & delicious & now it seems like they are tasting like cardboard. Did they change their meat vendor? Quite a shame... until we hear about good reviews, we won't be back & we use to visit for a "treat meal" about once a month. Their tater tots and milkshakes are good. I've experimented with their sandwiches and burgers and was not impressed at all. I also tried their "Mexican" food thinking that would be safe. Came to visit the area and decided to come in based on the reviews. Ordered a pastrami burger and asked for pepper jack instead of Swiss. Charged an extra $1.25 to change cheese... ok fine. $12 for a pastrami burger that had one, yes ONE slice of pastrami. $3 for a corn dog that looked liked it had been cooked last week and refried today. We will be frequenting this area quite a bit over the next few years and this place will never see another dime from us. Woman at the counter was rude and had a terrible attitude. Always prefer to eat at a "mom-n-pop", but I would go to Burger King before eating here again. read more

This was our favorite buger place . Then they started serving mexicsn. Altoro who cares about quality. We have noticed when he isnt there quality suffers. Mistakes on orders and quality. Tonight we ordered a burritto was ok nothing special lots of rice no beef taste. Chicken chimichanga no beans it had beans. A side chili relleno. A big dissapointment. A little drive (about 8 minutes) off Hwy 5, but well worth it! Tried a 1/4 lb cheeseburger and small Choc shake, and hubby had a bacon cheeseburger with fries and all were good eats! This is a fun food place don't be watching either your cholesterol or your waist line. I didn't read the description of the Ruben, it's three slices of bread, pastrami (not corned beef) and came with American and Swiss cheese ! The only thing that didn't hold up was the bread and why did I order sourdough ?????? Crinkled fries not so good but onion rings excellent. I took half a sandwich to go. My partner had a burger it was a sloppy mess but FUN. The staff of which was a guy and gal were hustling the whole time. We were staying at a local campground only one night. Me and my mom were driving around and got hungry, so we decided to drop in. Very small family-owned shop with neat decorations inside and very sweet employees. There was no line, so we were able to order right away and the wait for the food was not long. The food was great! I ordered chicken fingers and fries and I got REAL chicken fingers. Like, huge freaking pieces of chicken about the size of my hand. I am used to going to other restaurants and getting chicken fingers barely the size of my pinky. Everything was hot and fresh. My mom got a hamburger, and she enjoyed every bite of it. The sauces we got with the meal were good too. We could not finish all of our food, so we had to get to-go boxes. The employees were fast at cleaning everything as soon as a customer left. We were impressed and left feeling happy and full. Will be back again! read more

It absolutely fills me w/giddy happiness to see Big Al's, still plugging way, finding a way to prosper in the modern era, being as it is from so remote a galaxy of origins as the early 1970s... All the classic, diner-style menu items are here (read: burgers, fries, and even tots and onion rings as well!). THere' s also some spiffy menu items like the jalapeno burger for chili heads like me. There's also a lovely Mexican menu- co-habiting the dwelling. I've never had a bummer of a burger nor an experience at Big Al's. Maybe if they learned how to master the machaca burrito and actually put it on the menu, that'd be the elusive fifth star factor. I only rate the milkshake I bought at Big Al's. A root beer shake fashioned out of something "like" ice cream but "was not" ice cream. I think it was goop that simulates ice cream. I would have expected Big Al to use real ice cream. At Big Al's where you order food is a photo of a team of girls who worked there in the early 70's. All hotties! Head turners! I said to the server - a young man maybe 20 years old, "Bet you wish those girls were back here working with you!" He smiled and said they return once in a while. His smile made me think. Those "girls" are now retirement age and are may not be the "head turners" I saw in the photos. Big Al's needs a good cleaning and some pride in the food they produce. Sofie said she saw one of the patrons take a bite out of her sandwich and didn't touch it while her companion ate his food. It seemed to take a long time to make that shake. The place was quite empty. I got the feeling I was in the shadow of something that was once a great place. This place was recommended to me by a friend from Ashland, so I was expecting more. Don't get me wrong - my cheeseburger was good, but not great. And my fries were just okay. Overall, not a memorable meal, but not bad at all either. That's why I'm giving this place three stars. A-OK seems to fit the bill. read more

Went to Big Al's last night for dinner. My grilled ham and cheese was soggy on one side and the ham was super salty. My son's grilled cheese was okay with the cheese not quite melted all the way. Hubby 's cheesesteak was messy and just alright. The fries are Kringle cut and decent. Not outstanding. My malt had undisolved malt powder in it. All in all in was just adequate. Nothing special. My friend and I, who both have big appetites, couldn't finish all the food, it was so much. The rootbeer float was made with good quality ice cream and I was allowed to refill my rootbeer as much as I wanted (and was $3.50, excellent value given the quality and size). The milkshake my friend got came in a size cup that McD's used to call Super Size. Oh and by the way it was an oreo shake. The burgers were big 1/2 pound. Stopped by for lunch because I saw they had a Malibu chicken sandwich. Stood at the counter for a couple minutes and saw the cooks eye me a number of times but no one came out to take my order. Big Al's is my favorite burger in town. My husband and I frequent Big Al's and have for the last 6 years since moving here. My favorite thing on the menu is the Ortega Chicken burger with Avocado and my husband gets the garden burger. We share a french fry and sometimes a shake. The burgers themselves are huge- everything is huge- but this doesn't necessarily mean the quality is lacking. Everything is always consistent and tasty and made fresh to order + in a reasonable amount of time. I have never tried the Mexican food, though Al himself is Mexican and my brother said it's REALLY good, so I believe that! The shakes and malts here are excellent, better than anywhere else in town. Friendly- quick and always ready when they say it's going to be ready- which is HUGE in my book. Loves ya! ^_^ read more

After reading the front page obit on the original "Big Al" I decided to write a review of the present "Big Al's" (Arturo's) cafe. Big Al's is a "Happy Days" malt shop (without the Fonz). But it's wonderful little secret is that it is the best Tex-Mex restaurant in Ashland. Living in the heart of Texas with access to over 400 Mexican restaurants, cafes, and taco joints I eat a lot of very good Mexican food. Big Al's doesn't have an extensive Mexican menu but features excellent chimichangas, chili relleno and enchiladas with all the sides and an excellent salsa. His burgers bring back memories of pre-McDonald burger joints and his assortment of shakes are irresistible. Oh, and don't forget those crunchy tater-tots. This place is so welcoming and friendly I couldn't even handle it. My Grandma is an Ashland native, and she frequented this place with my now late Grandpa. The owner greeted my Grandma with the biggest smile and open arms, it was so sweet. Food was delicious; it tasted homemade! I had chicken enchiladas, husband had jalapeño burger, and Grandma had a shrimp basket. None of us were at all disappointed, and no one could finish the huge portions! Arturo and family are terrific member of the community. They wait on you hand-and-foot; not your typical hamburger joint! Their eclectic menu mix of Mexican and hamburgers is fun and tasty. Big Al's is such a fun place! It's our go to spot if we're craving something quick yet yummy and also a little bit more on the "cheat" side of things in regards to nutrition haha it's located just outside of the downtown plaza strip of Ashland which makes it easy to find parking, also easy to walk to from downtown about 15 mins. We went yesterday and I failed to snap a pic of my meal before I started eating (lol I was hungry) but I got the mushroom burger with Swiss cheese, my boyfriend got the pastrami burger with a side of onion rings. The rings are sooo good. Onion is sweet and the batter is crunchy. AND a large chocolate shake. we've also gone before and gotten Mexican food there, also delicious. Anyways enough about the food...the customer service last night 3/1 was fabulous. The woman working the counter was also cooking on the line in the back, she was quick to come out from the back when you approach the counter and genuinely treated you with kindness and with a huge smile on her face.
