Big A has the best burgers and Root Beer floats in town along with lots of other tasty choices. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I need to throw in that the owners are very generous as well. Once a year our group puts on a picnic for our disabled group of kids at Rollins lake. Every year Big A donates all the burgers, Hot dogs and buns. Super nice people and very much appreciated. I did get the root beer that's supposed to be world famous and it's not it just taste like mug root beer. It is absolutely the worst deal that you can get in their food isn't even good. I can get a better burger McDonald's or make one better blindfolded I recommend not eating here. Really bad. I've worked 13 years in food service and I can overlook some things but dang this was bad. Firstly, the kids were wiping their faces with towels and that's a big no no because someone can pick up that same towel to clean with. Idk what's up with Nevada countys health department but their standards are slack compared to the county I worked for. Second was seeing someone run their hand through their hair where they were prepping food, and then touching the food. Just some common sense things. Now onto the food, my friends chicken was well over cooked and dry, but her fries looked like she had the bottom of the bag from the freezer, the size of a tip of a finger. That's not the worst of it, my burger looked like it was recooked from a different time. Or microwaved. The cheese was cooked off to the point it was hard and cracklely at the edge of the burger and the burger itself was burnt and dry. Now from my experience in good service it even looked like the bun had been reheated with the burger, like when you microwave your fast food burger. One piece of bacon was cooked ok the other piece was burnt on the edges and chewy in the middle. Then on to my sweet potato fries looked like they were old or had freezer burn. Super disappointing, but the hygiene issues with touching your hair and wiping your sweat is to much. The food wasn't tolerable and I'm not someone who likes to make a fuss it takes a lot for me to do so. My friend has a piece of hair in her lettuce too. As a local I supported Big A Rootbeer Drive In through the pandemic and the food was always great. Since the COVID rules were lifted it's been downhill pretty quickly. The first philly cheese steak to go was overcooked and dry (could have forgiven it). The next lunch was a hot dog, so undercooked, if cooked at all, was more like a bologna sandwich. Tonight I ordered another philly cheese steak to go hoping the first was a fluke, but this one was literally so overcooked, to the point of being burned to be unrecognizable. Ordered a hot dog. The reason I did so because it was a miller dog and I knew that they were huge. Got the dog, Chicago style (or their version of the Chi-Town favorite) and the dog was fine. The problem was the small, weak bun which disintegrated the moment I picked it up. You can't use flimsy little buns. You need big, sturdy buns to hold a miller. Otherwise it tasted OK. The issue I have with Big A's? THE FLIES. Holy crap, I felt like was in the staring role of Lord of the Flies. There were so many flies indoors tried to use one hand to eat my disintegrating hot dog bun and the other, now full of mustard because of the hot dog bun, to slap the flies away from my food. Then the flies started to go after the hand with mustard and onions all over it. For a minute I expected Jeff Goldblum to jump put in full The Fly costume and say "Gotcha!" Worst experience ever. My fried chicken sandwhich was so good, but my friend's 1/2 pount guac burger was dry and they forgot to put cheese on it. Also, the restaurant is full of teenagers and grandparents. They need to work on cleaning the grease off the windows and fix the speaker boxes outside at the drive-in stalls. Still a fun place to stop at while in Grass Valley. If your ever taking a long road trip to to or from cali, this place is a really good pit stop for food. Burgers are nicely crisp, with them making the edges of the burger crunchy; along with the bun crisped by the grill. And unlike some burger places, this place doesn't cover the burger in sauces to mask the bland taste of the actual patty. They season the patty well, and use a very low amount of 1000 island so you can feel both. The fries are not over seasoned and crispy, very delicious. The milkshakes were pretty good, but vanilla is personally my favorite. The only concern is the price, but we got around and is debatably worth. Regret that i didn't get the root beer though. Found this little gem on a weekend trip to Grass Valley. The in house made root beer is the perfect reason to give them a try, it was delicious! I had the Philly cheesesteak sandwich & onion rings, they were fantastic. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the massive pastrami sandwich & loaded fries he ordered.
