I have lived in Grass Valley for several years and I can't believe I didn't stop in here! It is located in a historic building in downtown Grass Valley ( across the street from the Owl). So cute inside and very welcoming! I saw Christine on Good Day Sacramento ( my fav morning show) and I knew I had been missing out on this place for years! The Croissant was delicious and there was some really delectable treats as well. They also serve lunch and coffee specialties. It's an upscale place using quality ingredients ! Nice folks at the counter. Helpful and smiling. Just 4 outdoor tables on the sidewalk with patio umbrellas. I had my 2 Labrador retrievers tagging along so the opportunity to eat out on pedestrian Neal street is appreciated. There are several tables inside for you customers who are canine free. We were visiting from Los Angeles and took a stroll through the promenade when we decided to stop for a snack. We picked up a carrot cake to enjoy later for dessert, and I believe it was the owner who kindly recommended keeping it at room temperature for the best flavor. As we were leaving, she surprised us with a complimentary baguette and warmly thanked us for stopping by, saying she hoped to see us again soon. That thoughtful gesture made our visit even more special. Later that evening, after dinner, we followed her advice and enjoyed the carrot cake at room temperature--it was absolutely delicious! Our only regret? Not ordering more. Now we know to stock up for our travels next time. Beyond the incredible treats, we loved the décor, the inviting atmosphere, and the friendliness of the staff. I stopped by for a bite to eat at Cake Bakery and Cafe when I was in Grass Valley for the day. Since I was in the mood for something savory, I opted for the sandwich of the day, which was the "Grande". It was a vegetarian sandwich with egg frittata as the main protein. I opted for the half portion, which was the perfect size for a late breakfast/brunch. The order also came with greens tossed in a light vinaigrette. The employee who had taken my order kindly brought my order outside to the table I was sitting at when it was ready, along with silverware and a glass of water. I enjoyed my food outside in the shade while listening to a podcast and brought my cleared dishes back in when I was all done. Next time when I'm in the area, I'll be sure to swing by to try whatever sandwich they are offering for the day and grab a cup of coffee too! read more

If this was just about the food this would be a 5 star review. We went in about 1:30, had one person in front of us and maybe one other visible customer at a table. After waiting forever for the one customer, the cashier told us to wait & went to talk with other staff then perform some other chores. With 3 people behind the counter we waited and waited then left, my wife saying to the cashier "we give up" & the cashier wished us a nice day. We would have ordered a pie & probably bought a cake. This is not a one off. Every time we come up from Auburn we drop by. We've learned if they have more than 3 customers waiting not to bother, it will be an impossible wait and have walked away more than purchasing. I can't imagine how much business they lose. I don't know about you, but I don't beg anyone to take my money. read more

We stopped into Cake for a little late breakfast/early lunch while we were out in town that day. We were drawn in by the exterior of the building which looks like an old bank or something really cool, then I saw the 'Cake' sign and it was like the old French metro signs - which sold me! We went in and this place was decorated like a little French bistro with flowers painted on the walls and cakes and fruit everywhere. It felt like a movie! The baked goods in the display case were so perfect looking too. We got the soup, sandwich, and the Swedish cardamom cake (which was the best thing ever!).
