Great drive-in burger joint. I live in Truckee and make the the 1 hour drive down to this place when I want an epic good bacon burger. Big sloppy several napkin hamburger. I always get the same thing - a bacon burger, but my step-mom mixes it up, and she loves whatever she gets. The root beer is the best I have ever tasted. We just moved here and live close by. I've taken friends here who came to visit us from out of town and they all seem to really enjoy Big A, as do I! They make great food and it tastes really good. It reminds me of some really well made food from a family BBQ. Oh and they make their own root beer that must be tried, it's so good. Despite living very close by I am not going to frequent this place all the time because of a few reasons that don't have to do with the food. Sometimes the service can be so-so. I've walked in and the cashier just stood there without acknowledging us. I've also been standing for a refill and the workers were just talking not really paying attention. The one other slight negative is the price. It's pricey. I think for my family of 3 it could cost us around $30 or more. Just a little pricey for a fast food place. Overall this is a great diner to visit and get some good tasty grub. Just expect to pay a little But if you just come once in a while it's a great treat! I'm giving only 2 stars because the owners at Big A still serve drinks in foam cups. Just charge 10cents more for paper cups like the rest of the world. Second time eating at Big A. We ate here just Three days ago and loved it. Did not have the root beer so had to come back to have root beer and eat Burgers and Fries to make sure the first time around was not a fluke. Definitely not a Fluke . I ordered the same thing, 1/2 lb burger and a small fry. The burger was out of the park and the Small fry although seems expensive at $2.99 was plenty for two of us to share. The fries were perfectly done. I would think they refry them to give a little extra brown and more importantly a nice crunch. We are new to Grass Valley and this place is now Our Burger Joint. Oh and the root beer is a delicious creamy and nice vanilla essence. Almost like A&W but a lot smoother. I will have to have a float the next time around! read more

Big A used to be really good. But the last couple years the food quality has gone down hill. The staff wasn't very friendly on our last visit too. My wife and I ordered food to go this last time. Everything was cold, the curly fries were very hard and cold. Our burgers and bacon was cold and the bun tops were hard like crackers and the bottom buns soggy. We only live 8 minutes away so the food didn't get that cold on the way home. This will absolutely be the last time we go to Big A. Too many times the food has been garbage. read more

Great food. I had the BLT with a small tatter tots. Everything was fresh and delicious. The BLT was loaded with bacon. The tatter tots were fresh but a small does not apply. Think just not as big more than small. This is exactly want you want from an old fashioned drive in restaurant. read more

Got the 5 piece chicken and asked the fries be extra crispy. the fries were not crispy at all and of the 5 pieces of chicken 3 were tiny and I mean tiny. I inquired about this and the staff person gave me a few more pieces for free which was very good. This boosted the star rating. The staff person said they break the chicken in half to see if it is done, so apparently I was only getting some half pieces of chicken. But the free extra chicken that they provided was bigger but way way over cooked, maybe because they did not cut it half to see if it was done? should be pretty simple to deep fry pre made chicken anyway will not be ordering this again read more

I'm 100% a self professed Root Beer connoisseur, and this place has the best Root Beer on planet earth. I'm not lying, it's hands down the best! Creamy, delicate, not over powering, you can taste everything all at once, not just one harsh flavor. I'd drive 2 1/2 hours again just to get a Root Beer. Their food was good, fries were a bit too cooked, they were more like chips, and it's a good thing I like my bacon crispy because that's what we got! Big portions, would totally recommend 9/10. Maybe they'll start bottling their Root Beer so I won't have to drive so far for some! read more

The food is really good standing of what you get. The burgers are good but just stay away from the chili burgers it is horrible. The prices however it are extremely high they don't match up with the quality of the food. The food was fine. About as average as any local burger place. I chose to dine inside and it felt cramped and seemed dirty. Fair though since it's mainly a drive in like sonic. My only real complaint is that rootbeer is their thing. Its I the name. It comes in a large ice cold glass, but the rootbeer itself is warm. The glass itself doesnt really help cool it. Well, I decided to give Big A's another try tonight. I really hoped that things would be better. Since Big A's is known for good burgers, my daughter & I got the 1/3 lb deluxe burger with cheese (no onions on both & no pickles on one), my son ordered a hot dog with ketchup only, a family size curly fries, 2 small chocolate shakes with whipped cream, & a water. The total for my order was $35.94. I was a bit shocked. I was even more shocked by the food. The family size curly fries was rather small. It was about the size of a large fry at Jack in the Box. I could not believe that I actually paid $7.59 for them. My burgers came out with the wrong cheese. We asked for American & we were given cheddar. I asked for my burger to be remade with the correct cheese. The kids ate their food while I waited for my food. As I waited, I looked over my receipt. I noticed that we were charged an additional $1.00 for whipped cream on the shakes. Seriously? I pay $3.99 for a shake & you up charge for whipped cream but say nothing about it? That is super shady! By the time my food was ready the kids were done eating. So, I took my burger to go. Then to add insult to injury, the burger had onions on it. Great. So, almost $40 later, I am hungry, disappointed, & feel completely taken advantage of. read more

Checked this place out on a visit to the amazing Empire Mine (5 stars!). Ordered 2 regular size root beer floats. Plus for being large and coming in a real glass mug. Plus for the fun ordering style 'drive up' box. Plus for being under $3 each. Minus for cleanliness (yucky bathrooms and the tables were not wiped and sticky, as was the floor). Sadly, the root beer float was only 'ok.' Not terrible, but not that great either. Even the kids said the ones we make at home were better. The root beer was a little flat and too sweet for my taste. Props if it's homeade, as some reviewers commented, but the kids and I, weren't impressed. We didn't try the food, although some of the items looked interesting. I dig 'hole in the walls,' but only if the food is exceptional. Not sure if I'll be back to try it out, since I was a bit turned off by the sticky floors and tables. read more

There's good reason for "Root Beer" to be in the title of this establishment, for they do root beer right. In fact, Big A Root Beer Drive-In has the best root beer I've ever had in my life! Following that, the root beer floats are also spectacular. There's something seriously sensational about this root beer, I say. Have at it, I suggest. Another thing to note, because it's not noted in the adjoining reviews, is that the menu has at least 20 different styles of burger. Unfortunately, the people who partake in Big A's delights tend, I've noticed, to be grumpy. On more than one occasion I've sat next to arguing families -- arguing about food no less (as in, like, "You didn't get me a ketchup, too? Screw you!"); though no doubt the arguments over food were symptoms of grander issues, ones that persist after leaving Big A's. Other times I've had big angry fat folks nearly ball me over as they barge past me through the narrow exitway. I've yet to figure out the decor of this place. I mean, it's '50s diner-style and all, but they've got these photos on the walls that are a bit worrisome. The photos seems to be of past (and possibly also present; or else some of them just have similar faces) waitstaff -- as in, high school-aged girls -- dressed in work attire, blown up to life size, and sepia-toned to look vintage. That's what's plasted on the walls. ... I've never driven-in to the place. I've only eaten inside. One day I'd like to drive in, order a root beer float with two straws, and then, to the sounds of Top 40 oldies, share a delectable drink, maybe accidentally brushing noses: a bit embarrassing, but not enough to tear our eyes from one another. read more

We just moved to the area a few months ago and I have been craving hamburgers lately, so my daughter and I drove over for a quick lunch. I was pleased to see a menu with variety and plenty of clean tables to sit at. I ordered a cheeseburger, fries and a Coke for myself, and the hot dog kids meal for my daughter. The food was excellent! The fries were perfect and so was the burger. My daughter is small and she didn't eat much, but I sampled her hot dog and it was delicious! Visiting family here and they said it's a must try so we all came to Big A for dinner. I'm always looking for the perfect Rueben and I found it and so much more!! The sandwich was oh so delicious, the fries were crisp on the outside and seasoned just right and then there is the root beer.....I ordered the large and it came in a huge frosted mug and I tipped back that first sip then went completely stupid after that and had 2 more refills. Needless to say I made myself a little sick from over indulging in the absolute best root beer I have ever had in my 46 years. I'm actually sad that we won't be in town long enough to experience the whole menu but I will be grabbing the largest to go mug of that heavenly nectar on the way home. The staff were awesome as well! So Yeah, I recommend this place if it wasn't obvious by this point. read more
