I visited this store on two separate occasions this week and the staff experience felt inconsistent overall. A couple of employees were friendly and helpful, but other interactions felt cold and unwelcoming. The overall atmosphere seemed somewhat tense, and communication between staff did not appear very coordinated. When management assistance was needed, they were called from the office and the interaction came across as disengaged and not very approachable. I've generally had much better experiences at the Burbank location, where the staff has usually felt more welcoming and organized. read more

Terrible sense of customer satisfaction and service by the "leadership" in the Tujunga CA location. Ive been shopping with Big5 for 23yrs going as far back as your original location in Glendale (pre americana). Every time i walk into this location the employees are hard at work and the "managers" are hanging around either doing nothing or playing games/texting on their phones. This was the case upon my most recent visit when I walked in to buy a fishing rod for my 5yr old daughter's bday. Ceasar was hanging around and texting on his phone. The employee who was trying to assist me was clearly a new hire and needed to continuously ask Ceasar for guidance. The fishing rod i wanted to buy was seemingly defective so i asked the employee if it could be swapped with another of like kind. Employee had to go ask Ceasar. Ceasar was quick to shoot down the idea and didn't make a simple attempt to look for a solution. Quick "no chance" and was back to his texting. I then found another rod and reel combo but the lights didnt seem to be functioning correctly on this one. Again i asked the employee to maybe look in the back for a fully functioning unit which he had to ask Ceasar. Again Ceasar was blunt, short, and refused to offer a solution or assistance. His response was that they had already brought out many rods today and wouldnt bring more. Also he took the partially functioning rod and reel from me and refused to sell it to me. His justification was that "they dont wanna sell me a defective unit". I specified that it simply wasnt lighting up as it should however it was still functional and i would like to buy it. Ceasar was rude, blunt, and seemed inconvenienced that i interrupted his texting session. Ive been a store manager for best buy for 14yrs and never have i witnessed a person of authority act with such lackluster behavior. read more

I bought a baseball bat and a helmet for my daughter on Feb 19. Both items were purchased from this store. They were both sitting in my trunk, new and never used until I brought back to their store, 2 days later on Feb 21, because they sold me a T-ball helmet instead of a baseball helmet. Gil, the cashier, refused to accept the return for both items. The only reason was they don't look new to him. 2 days only. Seriously? The pictures tell everything: the bat is completely wrapped with price tag on. Same thing with the helmet, tags on. Gil had extremely bad attitude, which not only upset me , but also the people who were lining up behind me. Everyone was staring at that ridiculous guy. I suddenly found out that this store only has a TWO STAR review. Hahahaha, my bad. I stepped into a Big Bad shop. No more next visit! read more

Great store for anything sports related. It probably has even more than that too. There's guns/knives all the way to shoes and gear. I always visit if I have any outdoor activities coming up or if we need something for sports. I highly recommend buying workout gear as they've always done me justice. I also highly recommend the sports section everything is name brands and they'll do you good. My favorite aspect of the entirety of the store is that all the items are very reasonable prices, if anything they're too low if such a thing even exists lol. All in all highly recommended, definitely give it a shot. read more

Very great service. The entire team here seems so friendly and they do a great job at assisting customers with a smile. Every time I have walked in, I have never been met with anything less than a smile and a warm welcome. Everyone from the store manager down seems to be the best of the entire Big 5 organization. Like most sporting goods stores they're just okay. There's never anyone on the floor helping out. The people at the cash register are usually friendly. The selection is hit or miss and kinda overpriced. $16 for a youth basketball!? I'll probably go back if I need something in a pinch, but I'll have anxiety if it'll be in stock. This has happened numerous times . I read they have a sale on ammo. I call to see if it is in stock. they transfer me to the ammo department , they tell it is in stock. I then drive there. once I get there I'm told. there is no one in the store that can sale it to me. read more

I understand how crazy and busy these times are, especially with trying to buy certain items. I have been here multiple times and I understand the inconvenience and shortages that stores are experiencing. However, every time Ken has been extremely helpful in updating me, helping me purchase, and making the the process of purchasing as quick and efficient as the current CA process could be. I know these type of stores have to deal with difficult customers and I have seen Ken and other staff at this Big 5 personally try to diffuse tough situations and facilitate customers when people are so demanding. I continue to shop at this Big 5 versus other stores in the area that carry similar items because I know the managers and staff actually goes above and beyond in trying to make it a smooth process and helpful in trying to find in-demand items. read more

On 6/10/21 at about 2pm, I went to the Big 5 in Tujunga to look at purchasing ammunition. Upon getting to the correct counter the assistant manager spoke with me. I can't say helped, because he was anything but helpful. In fact he had a very poor attitude and treated me rudely. So much so, that I did something that I normally would not do, and told him he was a d!ck. He replied with, "welcome to the new world". Is this the attitude that Big 5 endorses, "the new world" where customer service is non-existent, especially from the management?! I will not frequent Big 5 again, especially that store! read more

Walked in, no one was at the knife dept. Instead, three employees were gathered in the corner having a personal conversation. Approached yo asks them a question, they said they'll be right with me but continued on with their personal conversation for another 7-10 minutes. So rude and disrespectful. After approaching the second time, one of the guys finally came over to help. Asked him what knife was on special and he said he didn't know and don't have any ads to show me. As I was pulling up the ads from the internet, he left his post again and was nowhere to be found. I just left. I'll never shop at this location again. Better management is needed. a new Big 5 is now open in La Crescenta! Right across from Albertsons and next to In-n-Out. They gutted and renovated an old liquor store that I never set foot in. The store will never be cleaner, well organized, the employees will never be as cheerful and helpful AS THEY ARE RIGHT NOW. I know, it's a chain store... But one that I have been wishing for in La Crescenta, since like FOREVER. Now I can save myself the long trek to Burbank to score some Nikes or a yoga mat. Actually, I need boxing gloves - and here's just the place... One thing that IS relevant to a newly opened Big 5 - it may take them a while to get their firearm permit stuff in order, so they are heavy on the airsoft rifles, where I would expect some shotguns and larger caliber things in the display rack. The store is not much different than the other Big 5 stores, but the people are all terrific. Ken who I believe is the manager and runs the guns and ammo department is a real professional. He goes way beyond what is required to meet all the crazy California requirements with a smile and to be helpful. He is worth the 20 mile extra drive to come to this store instead of the many that are much closer to my home. Made an emergency stop here last night the day before Christmas to find a bicycle tire pump that would be compatible to fill air into my 4 and 2 year olds new bicycles. A Christmas gift planning to give to them. Unfortunately, since the tires were so small it gave very little space between the tire spokes to fit the average pump making it a huge challenge to fInd something compatible. I was very lucky and fortunate though to run into Phillip working here, I can honestly say he saved Christmas for us. Once Phillip overheard the challenge I was having he immediately took action and found the right pump needed and even attempted to assist showing how the pump operates. Having the bicycles in the back of my car we tried one of the tires which worked which then I was able to go home and complete the rest on my own. Thanks again Phillip for your 5 star customer service and professionalism your problem solving skills really ended up putting a smile on my kids faces when they were able to ride their new bikes on Christmas Morning. read more

I took back a pair of Coleman hiking shoes that had started to fall apart on me yesterday. I bought the shoes 9 months ago and used them for walking only. I tried to explain to the 2 managers (Sal and Charles) that the shoes should last at least a couple of years, but they wouldn't budge and would not replace them. I would not give them one star if I had a choice but I feel it was not the company's policy that happened to me but the individual clerk that help me. I came in to buy ammunition and now with the new law I have pay for a background checks and I told the clerk what I wanted clearly and she grabbed the wrong caliber ammunition as I was checking what she pulled of the shelf since we are not allowed to grab our own and as I saw she pulled the wrong caliber when I went to pay and I told her she grabbed the wrong one.Then she told I had to pay again the background check which I told that was her mistake not mine I told her at the beginning what I wanted clearly, she still instead I had to pay. this is wrong what if she made the same mistakes again and she still said I would have to pay. To anyone shopping at big 5 beware you will have to pay for their mistakes I then decided not to ammunition at this store and I probably will not shop at this store anymore for any of my needs. I like to shop locally but after this experience I will go elsewhere. I left a message at the corporate office but I will see if they contact me back???? Didn't want to answer any questions about the product, very rude and unprofessional. I guess she just gets paid hourly and doesn't care how much sales the store makes. Been to this store several times. Staff is very helpful and store has a great selection. For all you back to school moms they have the largest Jansport Backpack variety that I have seen. They also have lunch boxes and water bottles. Prices are great most employees will give you the sell price when an item was on sale recently. There is also a $10 off of $30 purchase coupon you can use that comes in the mail. Sal provided excellent customer service. I will be back. read more
