This is the brand new store that just opened last Thursday! It is replacing the smaller store in the same shopping center! I went there this morning to buy some goggles because I am a lap swimmer. Unfortunately they don't open until 10am so I will be back today to take more photos and purchase a pair of swim goggles. This is bigger than the old Big 5 and appears to have more choices. I just love a new store! They always have apparel and sometimes really good prices on athletic shoes. Grass Valley is growing and this store will be great for active people! Camping supplies..men and women's clothes..and so much more. Love all the gadgets they have as well. Plenty of parking. It is In the same shopping center where the new Target is located. Had to but a duplicate fishing license that apparently I didn't know I needed until I did.

Big 5 Sporting, located at the right side of the SPD grocery store at 135 West McKnight Way, Suite 3H, Grass Valley has quite a variety of Sporting Goods to offer in the way of men and women's clothes, weights, shoes, socks, hiking boots, sweat pants and tops, outdoor canopies, umbrellas, and so much more. How about table tennis tables, paddles, ping pong balls? Or are you looking for fishing and hunting gear for your next outing? I went to the online store looking at cross bows that were for sale, and noticed that they had lite hiking boots on sale for $20 (normally $27), with a coupon, that could be used at this store. Their store is wonderfully stocked with almost everything under the sun, and the clerks can help you find something online if need be. So, I called to make sure they had the boots in stock, had the clerk put two aside, went and tried on a pair, and bought the two pair. Regardless of what nasty comments were made in the distant past, I find the clerks to be attentive and resourceful in providing service to customers who aren't rude and in a hurry. I give this location of Big Five a four star, because they have a great selection of sporting goods and clothing. The prices are the same as all Big Fives, so you either like that or you don't. They are also real close to where I live so that's a plus. unfortunately, like many post Covid businesses, it's hard to attract great salespeople and if your just an ok manager, it's hard to train and motivate new hires. The staff all seemed eager to help, they just didn't have much gas in the tank. Note to Manager, keep working on it! read more

NO STARS!!! Tried to buy some .22LR ammo at this store. Girl behind the counter said she did not feel comfortable with this transaction and refused to wait on me! Unfortunately, I decided to try this location again on Christmas Eve 2022 at about 12:10pm. The gun & ammo employees were so bad I just stop talking and left. Always lazy and rude service. Of course, some individuals are OK. But, odds are you will get lazy and rude. How this particular location can stay in business is beyond me. I went into buy a plastic kiddie pool. I mistakenly asked for a large priced at $19.99. After seeing the pool I really wanted was only $12.99, I was cheerfully refunded my $8 and change and got the right size pool. The employees at this store have always been very helpful to me. I was pleased that they enforced the (proper) wearing of masks and limited the number of people in the store. They also cleaned the checkout and CC checker as soon as I walked away. My leashed dog was very happy to be able to go into the store with me, it was way too hot to leave him in the car. read more

Horrible customer service. I have lived here for years and each time I try it out again the staff is disrespectful and acts as if each customer is a burden. Today was their last chance. I was on the phone asking what size ammo to get for my revolver because I had just bought it, and I asked the man behind the counter "How many rounds are in that box?" and he snapped saying "I can't sell you anything. You are on the phone asking prices for other people and I'm not selling you anything". I walked right out and went to the gun range in town who had no problem with me being there. Every time I come to the Big 5, all of the employees go out of their way to help me. It is a little crowded as far as merchandise, but honestly I get it. A small store trying to give its customers a nice variety, I would not change this local store. Today I needed to get a shin splint support thing.. Thing meaning I don't know what it looks like or what it does. I was only told it will help when I run. I asked a random employee walking buy and asked him about it. Honest, I got the full run down on why it is used, how, and what is the best product I should use for me. Wow.. This Big 5 is the absolute WORST of ALL the locations I've ever been in. I've been in Big 5's from here to Sacramento to San Jose and the Grass Valley, location is consistently awful. The main problem is the terrible management, which translates to very poor staff. There are the occasional friendly and helpful "floor staff", but they don't seem to stick around long. Mostly you have a lot of mislabeled merchandise, incorrect pricing, and merchandise that's supposed to be in the store that simply doesn't exist. All too often the cashiers don't pay any attention to customers who've been waiting in line and then simply serve whoever walks up on another side. This always creates a delightful confrontation of "Hey, I was in line first". This store is crap. I don't know if it's something in the water here in Grass Valley, but if you want exceptionally miserable, inept and rude service, then look no further than the Grass Valley Big 5. read more

I went to Big 5 today to cash in a voucher I received as a XMAS gift for a fishing license. I had the receipt as well as a receipt for the voucher. I was rudely told that I needed a voucher to get a license and they couldn't help me. I spoke with the person that gave me the gift and he told me the 2 receipts are all he received from the cashier that didn't appear she knew exactly what she was doing during this transaction. After speaking with the Manager & Store Manager it was clear they weren't interested in helping solve this mistake. They got the money and I got nothing. This is the last time I will visit this business and of course I will tell everyone I know. read more

I walked into the store today fully intending to buy a pair of hiking shoes. After ten minutes of shopping, I found two pairs I wanted to try on around $60 or $70. I was not greeted, acknowledged, or spoken to by anyone. The CSR on the floor was chatting up a girl continuously. Not even a "Be with you in a moment". I will never shop at this location again. I tried to walk in the store on Saturday and was stopped told that I had to wear a mask to enter the store. I went back to my vehicle grab the mask again tried to attempt to enter the store was stopped by a very rude girl at the door a second time questioning why I wanted to enter the store. I answered that I don't need to respond to that I'm here to do some shopping. She again stepped in my way not letting me enter telling me that it was a requirement for me to tell her my purpose for being there. I told her I wanted to buy ammunition she didn't question me on the ammunition law that went into effect. She then questioned whether or not I could pass a background check before I could enter the store. Yes I responded I can pass a background check I then walked by her seeking the manager to complain. When I found the manager David behind the gun counter and said that I would like to complain about the girl at the front door he questioned me why because she is doing her job correctly? I've been knew my complaint was falling on deaf ears as for in the middle of a pandemic his staff is questioning customers as why they want to spend money in his store and asking me in front of everyone else whether or not I can pass a background check. I told David let's move on I want to buy some ammo David then questioned me again for the second time if I could pass a background check I responded Yes I've already responded to this question he told me to provide an ID which I did and I said again that I would like to buy some ammo he walked over to his terminal to start looking up my ID and for a third time asked me if I can pass a background check at this point I was extremely frustrated I'm standing in front of the counter willing to take and pass the background check as I have many times before and I express my frustration to David at which time he told me he did not like my attitude and I responded in the same way telling him I did not like his either he then handed me back my ID and told me that he would not serve me as a customer and to leave his store. Too bad for David and Big 5 is a whole I went down to the gun range and spent $150 on ammunition again I will never return to this location read more

I went into big 5 for a fundraiser on Monday and a manager told me she would have a raffle prize to donate to NU cheerleading on Wednesday and said she would be there all day. I came in today (Wednesday) and she had called in "sick" so I talked to another so called manager named Tiffany she was very rude to me and then was very sarcastic and disrespectful she called the other manager to speak to her then when she got off the phone she told me she had the donation with her and I couldn't get it until Friday at 1:00 p.m., she said this in a very rude manner than continued to be sarcastic and say that she couldn't do anything about it and then said bye which my father was in the store and she basically told me to leave. Tiffany should be fired! Thank you for completely wasting my very valuable time. read more

This is by far the WORST big 5 I have ever been too. The staff is very rude and none of them seem to be very bright. Had to wait three weeks for a pair of shoes to be shipped from a Sacramento location and when the arrived they were the wrong shoes! I'll drive to Auburn from now on! read more

Was just looking up their number and am surprised no one's given these guys a great review. We're pretty lucky to have a Big 5 in Grass Valley, other than 'driving down the hill' for everything they carry. Every time I stop in for something, which is a couple of times a month, the store has lots of people inside. Kids too! I'd gone in recently for a sleeping bag and was surprised to see the huge selection of them in such a small space they have. They always have happy, friendly and knowledgeable employees too. And the price you couldn't beat by even going online and waiting for shipping. Big 5 is one of the go-to gems for living in our area with all of the outdoor activities we have going on in the spring, summer, fall and winter. Thanks guys! Keep up the great work! read more
