I was gifted a beach cruiser for my daughter to use on campus. It was in need of nee inner tubes and grips. I have driven by this location more than a dozen tones so I decided to give them a try. When you arrive there is a bell to ring before entry. Employees here are mask-less, so if that is something that concerns you, this might not be the location for you. Two men were servicing a couple of women and I told one of them what I needed. He said to bring the bike in so they can look at it. He confirmed what was needed and said my wait time would be 15 minutes. He went out back to service the bike, the older gentleman was working on another bike on the back of the store. They are a bit pricey and did not have much of a selection for handlebar grips. Plus side the older gentleman was bothered that the seat on the bike appeared loose and fixed it. The younger gentleman helped me load the bike in my car and gave me a registration card for the bike in case it gets stolen on campus.

"This feels awesome, it's now even better and smoother to drive". Thank you Ted, we will definitely come back.

I'm not a person who leaves reviews, but definitely this store deserves it. Ted is the best! He is very accommodating and helpful even though we came almost the time that he's about to close his shop. He was able to fix our bikes. He even teaches us how to take care and maintain our bikes. You would really feel that he really likes to help. When we rode our bikes home, my twins said "This feels awesome, it's now even better and smoother to drive". Thank you Ted, we will definitely come back.

Actually I needed golf club repair. The local golf repair shop couldn't fix my club. Owner had a torx wrench. Gave it one click and good as new !!! No charge! What a guy! Lots of happy customers walking in and out. read more

Walked up needing a couple bike tubes for some old bikes and walked out with the tubes, a ton of knowledge, and a new bike! Jeremiah answered all our questions and more. So glad we stopped in the local shop, we'll be back anytime we need something bike related. We even overhead him let a potential customer know that the bike he found at a garage sale was worth over $3000 used ($9000 new.) He could have bought it off him for a couple hundred bucks and the gentleman would have been happy, but he instead educated him and promised to help him make a couple minor fixes and advise him how to sell it. I called asking about their selection of bikes. Used first but then about new bikes as well. I asked very general about the selection and type of bikes. The person I spoke with could barely answer any questions about their products and was degrading on the phone. read more

This place is busy and worthy. I am so thankful I stopped by to get my bike serviced here. I needed my handlebars fixed and I am satisfied with the outcome. ALL of the employees and the owner made me feel welcomed. I was surprised and happy to see a childhood friend working here as well... gotta love the universe! Went last Saturday to get a flat tire fixed. When I arrived they had a little line but it moved quick, they had me in and out with my repair. The staff was great, very friendly. I will be going back for all my future bike needs... Great job guys read more

There was a little wait since a few people were ahead of me in line/inside, but a nice, visible sign out front advised me to just holler out front for help. It also said something to the effect of "No mask, no service." I can't remember exactly. Thank you for insisting on that. I met the owner and he was friendly. His attendents were nice enough as well. To get my busted back tube replaced with a new puncture-proof tube didn't take enough time for me to mind waiting around for it and for $25, I'd say that's pretty fair. They're friendly, small/local, this shop is the oldest around, and I'm a sucker for things like that. I'll be back. read more

This is the cutest and coolest little bike shop in Long Beach, that I've been thinking about using for a while to repair my son's old BMX bike. After I finally dragged my own old beach cruiser out of storage, I took both bikes here and the customer service was better than I expected. And, to my surprise, my bikes were ready in less than 24 hours! Definitely my go-to bike shop from here on! read more

Same shop and address as Lakewood Cyclery. Not sure why the owner hasn't consolidated under one name. Came here for a simple rear derailleur adjustment. Got tired of waiting in line at my regular shop and thought I would give them a try. Repairs were happening outside in the back of the shop. They were quite busy and I had to wait about half an hour out in the hot sun. Ok I get it it's COVID time. The staff didn't seem professional. The they looked like a motley crew of some of the owner's friends, a couple of neighborhood youth, and maybe a couple of down-on-their-luck, in recovery types, and a woman at the front door- does she work there? Not sure. No one seemed to know what they were doing. I have a fairly high end mtn bike with an electric motor. It's like they had never seen a mtn bike before and had never seen a dropper post! Repairs were carried out satisfactorily but then the owner tried to gouge me $40 for a derailleur adjustment! I questioned the price and he said "ok, $20. ". Kind of a shady place, not recommended. read more

Bicycle Works is the oldest Bike Store in Long Beach and has a large selection of tires, tubes, wheels, parts and accessories for the Long Beach/Lakewood area. We service every kind of bike and also provide mechanical service on e bikes. We sell new and used Beach Cruisers, Children Bikes, BMX Bikes, City Bikes, Commuter Bikes, Hybrids, Mountain Bikes and Road Bikes. Bicycle Works provides dependable bicycle repair, tuneups, and restorations. We offer Student Discounts, Military Discounts, Police and Fireman discounts. We also have a limited supply of bikes for rent on a daily or weekly basis.

History

Established in 2017.

Bicycle Works is the continuation of the Lakewood Cyclery bike shop that began in 1948. We also incorporated the bike shop known as California Cycle Sport that began in 1960. Bicycle Works came under new ownership in 2021 and continues until the present time.

Meet the Business Owner: Ted G.

I have been riding bikes and repairing them since I was a boy. In 1977 I was part of a bike tour from Alaska to Argentina that we called "Pedaling For Christ." In two years and two months we traveled through 15 countries and covered 23,400 miles on ten speed bicycles. That was when I learned the importance of fixing a bike the right way. I also became fluent in Spanish and welcome those who speak Spanish to the shop.

For $40, I expected a little more clarity and consistency. When I asked about labor pricing, I was told they charge different prices for different things, which felt a little unusual and unclear to me. Also, while I understand I didn't specifically request sealant for the front tire, I just assumed it would be part of the service since the rear tire was being handled. In hindsight, that may have been my expectation, but it still felt like something that could have been communicated more clearly. On top of that, the pricing just felt high for the amount of work done, especially given how quick the job likely was. It gave me the impression that I was charged a bit more due to the timing and urgency of the request. Overall, I appreciated the willingness to help me out last minute and the friendly service, but between the pricing and lack of clarity, it left me with mixed feelings. I probably wouldn't return based on this experience.

Owner Jeremiah is a bear of a man, very intelligent and possessing a good sense of humor. People were lined up outside the door to his shop and he worked hard to accommodate everyone. I showed him the problem with my bike and he said, "Wait and let me get a tool for this." He was right back and within another five minutes the problem was solved. I purchased 2 valve tubes late last night before they closed. Got home realized I purchased the wrong tube. Returned the next morning at opening. This place is a one stop shop for bikes. My family and I were out riding bikes when my bike had got a flat tire. We didn't have the proper tools to fix the flat tire and rode to our community bike shop. Once there the owner fixed it right up free of charge and gave us recommendations for the future.
