In anticipation of the food, I felt like helping out with bringing out the dishes and setting the table like grand ma's home. I'd recommend adding the dal and the dum aloo as sides to whatever you get - or just get those two sides with some rice cooked at home for a really comfy cozy home style meal. Visited this restaurant on a Saturday evening for dinner. At first glance, the menu made it clear this wasn't a typical Indian restaurant. We decided to try the thali, thinking it would give us a chance to sample multiple curries. At $60, we assumed we were getting two individual thalis--one per person. To our surprise, it turned out to be a single plate meant to be shared between two. That was definitely disappointing, especially since we arrived hungry and expected a more substantial meal for that price. For context, most Indian restaurants typically serve a thali per person in the $12-15 range. The food itself was just okay. A couple of the curries were decent, while others didn't quite hit the mark. That said, we still finished everything simply because we were starving. One positive was our host--Deepak, I believe--who was friendly and had a great sense of humor. I genuinely appreciated his service, though I regret not leaving a bigger tip because I left feeling like the value for money just wasn't there. I'm an Indian food fanatic, so when I heard Bhuna had plenty of gluten-free and vegetarian options, I knew I had to drag my friend (she's gluten-free, vegetarian, AND soy-free!) along. We were both blown away! We kicked things off with Seasonal Vegetable Pakoras and Fried Potatoes, perfect for dipping and sharing. Both were crispy, flavorful, and a great way to start the feast. I ordered a Happy Hour Paloma which was also done well. For myself: Pork Vindaloo and the Happy Hour chicken slider. The Vindaloo was fantastic, but while I was fine with the slider, I wouldn't bother getting it again. As always at an Indian restaurant, I indulged in fluffy naan. I tend to judge if I like an Indian restaurant or not by the naan. Bhuna exceeded expectations! We wanted to explore this place since quite sometime because of so many amazing reviews about this place. We went on a weekend. The ambiance is really nice. The service is amazing and the staff were very friendly. We ordered the lotus root fries, which were really good, Kashmiri tomato and eggplant curry, which is amazing with very unique flavors. Palak paneer was very average. I ordered a paneer slider and it wasn't that great, it was very bland. If you are in and around Portland, definitely a try. The good: service was prompt. Food was fast. Restaurant was nice and clean. Not as good: Didn't like the food. Appetizer was interesting and okay. One dish was mediocre. The other was almost too salty to eat. (They forgot a third dish but after trying the first two didn't even bother asking for it) Maybe just an off day? A delicious first visit to Bhuna! We came in right around 5pm, while they were still doing happy hour. It was empty when we sat down but starting to fill up as we ate. Our server was super friendly and enthusiastic about recommending options. I went with their house gin and tonic which was made with a delicious house syrup full of cardamom flavors. We also got an order of the fried potatoes (like Jojos) with ketchup mixed with spicy pickles - yum. And for mains we both got the palak paneer bowl which was delicious and had plenty of paneer. I especially like mixing it with a little bit of the spicy pickle that came on the bowl. I think I'll be back, when in the search for some Indian flavors in this area. read more

Came here on a happy hour crawl but it's not in my neighborhood or even quadrant. We had some skewers and a few drinks. The drinks were good, the food was good and the service was GREAT! I was surprised during hh the place was empty, I'm not sure if we were geriatric in our pursuit of beverages or if this place isn't well-known? I have just begun my vegan journey. This place has vegan choices. I forgot the name of the plate but it was a jackfruit special that I got. The sides was a soup and strings beans with vegetable pakora as the appetizer. The string beans were spicy which I loved. The pakoras with the sauce and the lime sprinkled on top just so good. The jackfruit special was so good. The mix of the flavors blended well together. The soup was a calmer to the spices of my other dish. All of the food was delicious. My husband and I found Bhuna on Yelp, and were suprised to read some of the lower star reviews. However, as avid cooks ourselves, and based on our knowledge of menu and ingredients, we knew this was a must try. So glad we stopped in, because this was by far the most elevated indian cuisine, Kashmiri inspired (so delightful), that we've had in years. Just like any restuarant, you have to compare apples to apples, and I wouldn't compare this to another indian buffet experience or casual thali dining, as a previous review mentioned. Definitely a fine dining version of Indian cuisine with a Kashmiri twist. This is a culinary experience, with quality food and obvious care and attention to detail. Chef Deepak was welcoming, personable and gave us a tailored thali, allowing us to try what we were curious about, appreciate that. I'm vegetarian and my husband loves the non-veg options, yet we both got an amazing balance on our thali. Honestly we couldn't even finish the thali between the two of us. Unless you are going to a cafe attached to a grocery store, thalis are not $15. Come here if you want to try amazing spice flavored indian cuisine. I'm not an expert on Kashmiri cuisine, but i'm pretty sure what I ate is a great representation. I specifically loved the lotus root fries, and the eggplant, while my husband loved the rogan josh and chettinad chicken. This is a perfect spot for a date night or for a happy hour where 3-4 people could share a thali with some apps, to get an idea of the flavors. Presentation of food was exquisite, and appealing. I would have loved to see more Indian customers appreciating the level of indian creativity here, and I hope that more of the local community understands how important it is show up for businesses trying to break the mold. We don't think twice about spending $100 when dining at a new bistro or fine dining italian/thai/french cuisine. Highly encourage the foodies of Portland to come and try this place out, it was a unique flavor profile and definitely hit the spot. Came here for chicken week to try their special. The sandwich was great. The chicken was juicy and well-seasoned. I tried the pakora as well but it wasn't my favorite. My husband loves Bhuna so much we had to have dinner at Bhuna during this visit to Portland too. We got Chickpea Battered Calamari, and Vegetable Pakoras to start. Vegetable Pakoras were good, a good mix of vegetables, lightly battered and fried, served on top of a very good green chutney. We loved the Calamari, different from the usual and very good. We had a great meal. We started off with a lamb slider. It was fantastic. Flavorful and moist. Then we had the Mushroom Naan which was also fantastic. Our main dishes were Rogan Josh, lamb skewer and eggplant and tomato dish. Everything was perfect including the cocktails. I believe we were being served by the owner. Bhuna was a wonderful food surprise!!! We took our order to go so had we eaten everything in restaurant I suspect the items would have had better texture but still everything was delicious!! The chickpea battered calamari had great nutty flavor to the batter (some pieces were crispy and loved the crunch, and other pieces were softer) but the tamarind sauce that came with it was perfect! The fried chicken burger on special was hearty and had great flavor as it was covered in spices. Green beans were spicy but a favorite in flavor - wish the portion size was bigger though! Lamb bowl was nicely done - huge salad accompanied it for an extra $3 and wish the protein portion was a little larger and more tender and was probably the least spicy / flavored of everything we ordered but was still good. The chicken rice bowl came with great sauce and flavors too. Again, wish the meat was a bit more tender but still... so delicious and would definitely return to enjoy it all again! read more

Bhuna specializes in Kashmiri food. In case you don't know India and the surrounding countries are considered to be a subcontinent. In other words, there are vast regional differences in terms of culture, customs and cuisine. Since Kashmir is in the Himalayan alpine part of India, that means lots of meat (Muslim majority area), yogurt, cream, nuts and raisins unlike say Kerala, on the Southern tropical coast where fish, seafood, coconut, and tamarind will dominate. I order up their charred corn which came on the cob and drizzled with ghee and some spices and it was wonderful. Next came the lamb, which I could tell had been marinated in yoghurt to soften the meat before it was cooked up in the curry. That came with basmati rice, pickled radish and was really flavourful as well. I ended with their Mango Khulfi, an Indian frozen treat and it came covered in roasted pistachios- again fantastic. One thing I really love about Portland is how the city has really embraced Southeast Asian and East Asian food like no other city in North America. Asia is a massive continent with thousands of regional cuisines to investigate and explore and I hope Portland continues to give such offerings like Bhuna. read more

A rainy evening, proximity to where we were staying for a week, love of Indian food in general, and a spot on the Portland Eater 38 list made Bhuna the choice on a Tuesday evening. There are clearly about a million good restaurants in Portland, and I don't know whether Bhuna is actually in the top 38, but it was certainly worthwhile. Bhuna's tagline is "Indian Soul Food." Not totally sure what that means other than the style of food does seem a bit home-cooking feel--fresher tasting, with less overwhelming presence of salt and ghee than many of the Americanized Indian places--and there are a number of chaat-style snacks on the menu. We shared the Kashmiri Lamb Rogan Josh, channa masala, and masoor daal, along with a big kale & greens salad. That last item was really nice--they all were, actually--a bright, light contrast from what can sometimes feel like heavy sledding in regular (i.e., generally North) Indian places in the U.S. We love the idea of the smaller veggie plates, which allows you to mix it up a bit. (I've only seen that at the couple of Indian restaurants we've tried in Britain.) Overall, the food did not pack the explosive flavor punch you might get with some regional Indian varieties (I'm thinking of an example like Hyderabadi from my own regrettably limited experience), but it was very balanced and satisfying and fresh-tasting. Unlike some Indian restaurants, which can be a little stiff and formal, Bhuna feels very much like 2021: very casual and comfortable, bright and modern interior with colorful accents, friendly counter service, pleasant and unobtrusive music. Cocktails are a nice touch--a masala-spiced Old Fashioned was delicious and fit in well. Very relaxed and enjoyable dining experience, four-stars-plus, if it didn't quite get to five in my mind. read more

Kept seeing this place on PDX Eater's guide so thought I would give a try. Overall impression: A-OK Flavors of the Pork Vindaloo and Tomato Eggplant Curry in the bowls were good. I really love the side yogurt dip, super delicious! Fresh ingredients were used too in the curries, rice, and naan bread. But, for the price you pay and the portion you get this was a bit of a rip off. The menu was also pretty limited which could be a good or not so good thing. I got takeouts and it seemed like everything was pre-made and pre-packed before being slightly heated in the microwave. I understand that that's efficient and all but it detracted from the experience so I don't love that. Maybe dining in would have been a better way to go about it. The inside of the restaurant does look pretty nice; open space and nicely decorated. Not bad, but also not eager to go back anytime soon. read more

Back again for some comforting food! We got our usual 2 person veggie thali but this time also got their paneer slider and a jackfruit special. Both were so good! The paneer was ultra soft melting in the mouth and the jackfruit main was very flavorful, especially with the mango achar (Desi pickle). We went in just 35min before closing but never felt rushed to order or finish quickly and leave. Our server was so friendly! Food came out quickly, everything was well explained and the food so good, we just inhaled everything in 25mins! Pretty relaxed atmosphere made the experience very enjoyable. Popped in for brunch on a rainy Sunday. I had the chicken bowl option, while my friend had the beef, so we could try both. Fun, fresh, interesting flavors with a perfect amount of heat. That plate got cleaned! Mango lassi is made with coconut milk instead of yogurt, and they find a way to make the flavor complex without much sweetness. It's really lovely. We shared a thali plate for 2, and it had a large selection of excellent dishes with naan, rice and cooling raita with fresh dill. The chicken curry in particular was a stand out. I also loved all of the vegetarian selections on the thali -- the potato curry was silky, buttery Dahl, creamy eggplant, and snappy collards with kohlrabi. This was a stand out meal! I'm not one to go out of my way to leave a bad review.. We decided to stop in for a quick bite. The server wasn't really helpful, we had to ask several questions to figure out what was popular. Tried the vegetable pakoras, they weren't bad. Fried, crispy on a green chutney. Definitely the only thing I'd go back for.. The Kashmiri tea was not what Kashmiri tea is. For anyone that knows Kashmiri tea, they know it is a pink tea with milk. We asked the server but she clearly didn't know what she was talking about. We also got their Naan which was also decent. The daal or lentil curry was a bland tasteless "soup" she called it. I also ordered the Coconut Mango Lassi which basically tasted like coconut milk.
