A few girlfriends and I came to check out Bevy during happy hour on a weeknight. The occasion: to celebrate a friend's birthday. She had been to Bevy before (the menu was different during her visit though), and this was my first time.
I love the happy hour here cause the hours aren't super limited (Monday-Saturday from 4-7 p.m.). Happy hour includes $1.50/oyster, $2 off all beers in cans, $2 off small plates, $6 Spanish or sparkling wines, $6 classic cocktails, or punch bowl specials for $30 (serves 4-6 people). Sidenote: my friend who had been here before said the hh used to be better (more discounts), but the food here was still great, in terms of taste.
On a Thursday evening, it wasn't crowded, but service was still slow. Thankfully, we weren't in a rush and had time to leisurely enjoy our evening. The hassle came at the end of the night (hence three stars instead of four) when we were given the wrong bill. We didn't notice at first because we split the bill among our group members. But, later on, I noticed that we were charged for drinks and food we didn't order. When I tried to contact the restaurant later to ask for the correct bill (called and messaged the business), they were unresponsive. However, the situation ended up working out because when we totaled everything up, the incorrect bill that we were given ended up being around the same amount. Phew.
Other than the mediocre/slightly lacking service, the food we ordered was excellent. Here's what we got:
"Sam & Chips": This included a smoked salmon spread and taro chips. I requested two orders of this because it was so good. I loved salmon in of itself, and this smoky spread definitely delivered. The taro chips were light and yummy, but lets be real - I was eating the spread straight up by itself.
"Sprouted Wings": I love brussels sprouts, so ordering these were a no-brainer. They featured a sweet and spicy glaze. The brussels sprouts were cooked well (still tender but not overly plump) and the seasoning was on point.
"Ploughman's Plate": This was one of the few non happy hour items we ordered. It was pricy at $17, but it was a good sampler of everything. It included charcuterie, artisan cheeses, pate, chutney, mustard and slices of a fresh-baked baguette. I don't get to have pate that often, so this was a treat, but I loved mixing and matching everything that came on this platter (especially covering the different cheeses with the mustard and pate).
"Fried Avocado": This dish was one of the most intriguing to me. What I didn't expect was the heat that came with it. It featured half an avocado coated in panko and covered in Mexican slaw. Even though this dish ended up being too spicy for me to handle in the end, I was still glad we ordered it (and I'd still probably get it again). I love avocado and I enjoyed the panko breading. I'll just have to beware of the aioli (or was it the slaw?) that brought a lot of heat to the dish.
"Bevy Oysters": These are sold at market price, but during happy hour, they're only $1.50 each. These oysters on the half shell are served with mignonette. These oysters are a good size; definitely a good deal if you're a seafood lover. It's hard to find reasonably priced oysters during dinner!
"Mac Bites": If I came back again for happy hour, this is what I'd get. It includes jalapenos mac and cheese balls and buttermilk ranch. I love a good mac and cheese, so as long as this one's not too spicy, I'm down to try it. Plus, deep-fried mac and cheese covered with buttermilk ranch? How much better does it get?
"Patata Puffs": This was another item I was eyeing on the menu, but resolved to save for a future visit. It includes potatoes, a crème fresh, parmesan and herbs. The pictures of this dish look super good, so I'm excited to try it at some point in the future. read more
