The service was very slow but friendly, and the delicious beers and food all around the table was mostly all great. The brussels sprouts were the star of the show done perfectly, crospy with tasty balsamic vinegar! Fish and chips was huge. (You can definitely order the one piece) The crispy chicken burger was crispy and delicious. The bison burger was ok, a bit overcooked and kind of dry, but that might've been a one off experience. The atmosphere was busy and lively. We enjoyed our 20 ounce beer. They have a really good list to choose from. It's definitely worth a stop if it's not too busy.

It's in a gas station parking lot attached to the Howard Johnson. Do not let that deter you, it was really solid pub food, definitely better and sustansibly more affordable than any pub I've eaten at in downtown Victoria. Clearly all of the other diners were locals, at 2pm on a Saturday. We sat in a cozy booth in the bar after being greeted by a very friendly bartender. We ordered two pints of Magners, the shepherd's pie with salad and the beef dip with frites. The shepherd's pie was beef, so technically a cottage pie, which I prefer. It came piping hot, with little scoops of mash on top and a dark colored gravy. Perfection, meaty, creamy, cheesy deliciousness. The salad was quite nice with field greens, cherry tomato halves, carrot, cucumber and green onion with housemade basalmic vinaigrette. The frites were of the super crispy possibly breaded variety, really excellent dipped in the au jus that came with the roast beef dip. I'd definitely come back on my next visit to get really good Irish pub grub without all the touristy prices.

Soft, buttery - more or less what you're looking for in fish and chips. But they come in these perfectly shaped rectangular blocks that look like they've been pulled out of a box. Not what I was expecting at all. None of those glorious big blocks of fish-shaped fillets with ample batter all around. Kind of disappointing. Chips - 3/5 Servicable, nothing special. You can tell they made it from real potatoes, but that's about it. Chowder - 4.5/5 Delicious! They give you a really small cup (my only gripe), but the chowder has lots of ingredients, is flavorful, and really quite tasty. Popcorn Shrimp - 4.5/5 Great popcorn shrimp. Big pieces of shrimp, well-fried but not overdone, lots of shrimp in the bag. Tastes great with the marinara sauce. Overall - pretty good! Would come back, but maybe more for the popcorn shrimp.

I sure don't know who the folks are that lavish praise here because our experience certainly fell short of those kudos. To be fair, the wait time was tolerable and service was ok. But that's where our kudos end. It all then comes down to the food offering! Everything starts with a cup of joe, and the beverage they served was bitter and terrible (hello, Starbucks). We then changed to decaf, and unfortunately that tasted of residual pot cleaner with a hint of some form of coffee. Egad. Aside from its mediocre taste, the main dish was also a disappointment: the so-called Traditional Benny with .95 cent shredded potato option. Found it difficult to cut then chew through the muffin base, and the few bacon hunks that were hiding just under the egg and hollandaise sauce were as tough as genuine shoe leather. To add 'insult to injury', the shredded potatoes lacked any sort of taste (other than chopped straw) -- typical of inexpensive (reheated) frozen side-foods. To top it all off, while paying the bill they scattered a few hunks of packaged bubble gum onto the table. Meh, that was barely edible too. I think we were at our table for maybe 1/2 hour and could hardly wait to leave. At $50+ for barely edible food, we can't see ourselves returning to five and dime.
