Dr. Ballinger worked miracles for my daughter. She had such severe convergence insufficiency that she could not read, no matter what tutoring she got. Dr. Ballinger corrected my daughter's eye problems and she went from only reading sentence or two, to reading all of Harry Potter in 6th grade. The knowledge was in her head, but she just could not focus her eyes on the page. My daughter is 10th grade now getting A's in her high school AG classes and she just got an 89% on a rigorous history exam. Dr. Ballinger is our ANGEL!!! I came to see Dr Ballinger after being treated by numerous doctors and optometrist a full year after my injury. None of them could explain what was happening with my eyes and since they couldn't explain it, it wasn't really happening. Dr Ballinger knew exactly what was going on and how to treat it. Dr Ballinger did an extensive vision evaluation for my daughter which was over many weeks. She was always so patient, gentle, and always explained not only to me but to my daughter what was going on. she would always give words of encouragement and incentives to keep her going and engaged. How Vision Therapy Changed My Life A letter from a doctor to her optometrist: Dear Dr. Ballinger, Now that I have graduated from medical school and am a physician of Internal Medicine, I want to take a moment to say thank you. I would not have become a doctor without your care and the benefits of vision therapy. As I started having double vision in my grueling first year of medical school, I was caught off guard with the realization that I was seeing double when I would read. This made the hours of studying difficult, and I was getting headaches and nausea toward the end of the day when my eyes were especially tired. Despite knowing I had surgery for strabismus as a child, up until this point, I only had the slight difficulty with hand-eye coordination or the occasional awareness of my eye turn when I was more tired than usual. But the demands and stresses of studying took a toll on my eyes and caused me to seek medical advice from my pediatric ophthalmologist as well as another ophthalmologist at a renowned University institution. Although they adeptly diagnosed my vision issues as being related to my strabismus, my treatment instructions were as follows: surgery is not an option, so keep your eyes moist, update your prescription, and rest. This was a disappointing treatment plan, and it left me wondering, could I continue in medical school and succeed during a time when frequent rest was not the most viable option? Could I even ethically practice medicine with less-than-optimal vision? While I was struggling with these questions and doing my best to follow the doctor's instructions, I stumbled across vision therapy. At vision therapy, my eyes were challenged through exercises involving 3-D images at different distances, scanning and tracking, and depth perception. I started with two to three sessions per week and completed daily home exercises to help train my eyes. As I continued therapy, I noticed that my eyes and brain were learning to work together, such that I felt like I could voluntarily adjust my eyes to focus near and far without double vision. I noticed that my eyes were strengthening and were working for longer periods of time. I tapered down to weekly sessions and later to biweekly sessions throughout second year, and I was able to do at least monthly visits during third year. While I was aware of my limits and made it a priority to sleep well and take frequent breaks, vision therapy gave me the extra skills and endurance to complete my studies and maintain adequate vision during my clinical clerkships. I was amazed at what my eyes could do with dedicated training and care. It has been humbling to recognize that as I was studying medicine and seeking to become a healthcare provider, I also needed to become the health care recipient. I recognized the difficulty of living with a chronic condition, the care and commitment it takes to be a patient, the discouraging moments of feeling weak, yet the encouraging lessons of recognizing my resilience. It was amazing that God made my eyes to be resilient and to become strong with the training of vision therapy. I learned that medicine and surgery cannot always provide the best solution. It turns out that vision therapy is a helpful tool for patients with a variety of medical problems, from autism and learning disorders, to stroke, trauma, and concussion. As a doctor and patient, I highly recommend that all ophthalmologists consider vision therapy as a means to support and strengthen the abilities of those with vision impairments (and more!). And as a primary care physician, I now have one more tool in my belt for quality patient care. Dr. Ballinger has over 40 years experience as a practicing optometrist, helping people with various and difficult vision problems. She has been extremely helpful in diagnosing and understanding my child's eye muscle and eye movement disorders. The absolute best optometrist we've seen. Dr. Ballinger is helping us with our infant (it's important to note that most optometrists I've spoken to won't deal with infants). She's a fantastic strategist when it comes to diagnosing and treating, hence her willingness to treat infants. I was stunned at how well should could keep our baby engaged and happy throughout the examination. What we love is that her ultimate goal is having our daughter's brain/eyes retrain themselves with eye therapy, exercises, etc. Where other doctors told us that our options were patching or surgery, Dr. Ballinger has opened us to an entire arsenal of non-invasive treatments. Great Dr for you whole family! Myself, my wife and our toddler/ infant son have all come here for exams. I came here for an eye appointment for myself and learned about their vision training and their specializing in working with Developmental Optometry? (kids/ autistic/ special ed/ TBI, etc...) I made sure to make an appointment with Dr Ballinger for my 2 year old son, I did not think there was a way to do a vision check up on a child but WOW!! She proved me wrong, my son sat there and did all of the little tests she tried which were all age appropriate and even let my son take home a couple of toy cars!! She said he had great vision and to come back in a year or when he starts preschool, when his vision becomes more demanding, he always sits in front of the TV and bangs his head on corners but she said that it is due to his being 2 and too distracted by what he is doing. WHEW! what a relief!! When I asked about ordering contacts for myself it turns out that the other Dr, Dr Cohn usually does contact lens patients but they both see all ages and do vision training, I will definitely tell my friends. I definitely recommend 100% especially if you have young kids, there is a train set and blocks in the lobby for the kids also, I had to pull my son away from the choo-choo when it was time for his exam! read more

I was almost in tears at her office this morning. She confirmed my suspicions about my son's visual issues. He's got 20/20 acuity and a regular optometrist wouldn't have caught the problem. It's treatable, and it will help him so much with his success in class and ultimately with self-esteem and self-image. Before I met her, I thought the vision therapy was the specific treatment prescribed in the doctor office only. To my pleasant surprise, Dr. Ballinger opened a door of endless possibilities to do VT in a meaningful and fun way. She taught me to mesh vision therapy in my son's daily life. She called it globalization. During the grocery shopping, I ask my son to find Fuji apples, his favorite fruit (make learning both meaningful and joyful). This activity involves visual scan, visual discrimination, visual perception, and figure ground. I also ask him to identify the location of apples and describe to me how to get there. This activity involves bilateriality and spaciality. This process is a language-rich communication (both receptive and expressive language). She creatively adds language components to her vision therapy. Dr. Ballinger uses fun games to teach kids to learn. She builds confidence and inspires kids to do better in a comfortable and safe environment (no blame nor criticism - always catch kids for what they did right). Dr. Ballinger is the first OD in 10yrs to be able to truly help me w/ my eyes, and not only help but understand how my struggles w/ vision translate into some of my struggles in life. She is professional yet personable. She shares/educates her patients. She is respectful of your time (the office runs punctually) and has pretty great hours for an OD (I was able to go in before work at 7:30am for my exam). Plus, she has an amazing machine that replaces having your eyes dilated that is more in depth, doesn't have any side effects, and takes a very short amount of time. She doesn't try and nickle and dime you and is just generally an incredibly knowledgeable OD (she is a prominent figure in her field, and known as an expert for what she does internationally) and good human being. read more

I felt compelled to write a review after discovering today at another opthamologist's office that the $225 lenses (not glasses, just the lenses) prescribed to my son were nothing more than the most minor reading glasses with just +.25 power. We were told by Dr. Ballinger she wanted lenses to help our son with his convergence insufficiency issues. She insisted that her lab would do the best job. We balked at the cost of frames, as we had no vision insurance, and ended up getting those elsewhere, but chose to allow her lab to do the lenses. I can not speak to her ability or expertise with vision therapy, because we chose to see another vision therapy specialist covered by our medical insurance. I know other parents who have used her, and were happy. I, however, was not happy to discover we were charged $225 for lenses that weren't even worth prescribing, as per our current opthamologist. I took my 8 year old autistic son to Dr. Ballinger based upon favorable reviews on some of the autism groups. My son can be very noncompliant and Dr. Ballinger did a good job of keeping my son engaged and let him have a degree of control over how she conducted the exam. What I didn't appreciate: 1. Money is tight so I just wanted new lenses for my son and they kept pushing for new frames. 2. The tech told me $85 for the new lenses but when I get to the front, the lady says $130. I ask why the $45 difference and she stated that was for the computer gizmo scan she did minutes before Dr. Ballinger's full exam. I told her she hadn't disclosed the additional cost nor had I consented to it. I had made it clear at the time of the appointment that I only wanted what was covered by VSP's insurance. This was quite deceptive and she ended up walking back and getting Dr. Ballinger's approval to take off the $45 fee. Very underhanded. 3. We arrived last Saturday at 9 AM to pickup the glasses. My son was seen very quickly by the tech (good). We get to the front and the same lady wants me to confirm that I will be bringing my son back at 1 PM for vision therapy-claiming to have left me a message to that effect. I hadn't played the prior day's voicemail believing it just to be a message reminding us of the appointment. I told her I can't afford to fund vision therapy nor did I ever request or schedule a vision therapy appointment. 4. Changing story: the tech told me on the day of the exam that if the lenses get scratched they will get free replacements and if the frames get broken - just bring him pieces and free replacements will be provided. On the day of picking up the glasses the tech tells me if they get scratched that he'll "try" to get the lab to replace them. Dr. Ballinger was good with my son. Just make it clear when you show up that you are only interested in what is covered by your insurance and nothing else. If they try to stick you with addons - refuse. read more

She took a lot of time to explain things to me, and she didn't even require that I make any type of visit! What she did was leave it open for me to write back or call in for a free consultation, which I did.
