The room was beautiful. It's either new, or newly updated. There were a lot of nice finishes, especially in the bathroom. I can't rate it a 5 because - the towels. For the love of all things comfortable, give me a full towel I can wrap around my body and not see through! The bed was a bit firm for my taste, but my husband likes firm. The linens were okay, not great. Overall, though, this is a very nice clean hotel. read more

Wow our room was completely remodeled. This is the best kept secret of Durango. The rooms were great, there. large area where you have the frig and micro. There is a grocery store only a block away which was super. I loved the breakfast and the cookies at check in. The staff was great and I would highly recommend this property. If you need a shower and a bed, this will do. Not the Embassy Suites but that's not what you're paying for anyway. Room AC was tricky as the vents blow up through the closed curtains until you devise a way to move the air otherwise. Parking lot is small and crowded but we made it work even with a Suburban. Staff is friendly and WiFi works well... No complaints there. Strange that I noticed but some of the room entrances are at the end of dark alcoves which could be either a fire hazard or something that women dread. read more

Driving from Northern California, home to Santa Fe we decided to stay in Durango for a night. We picked the best western mountain shadows by chance. It turned out to be great! Although there was no breakfast, due to the Coronavirus outbreak, all else was good. Josh, at the front desk, got us checked in quickly. The room was very clean and sanitary. To me the best part was the quiet heating, baseboard heat. It was much better than the usual-noise from an AC unit many motels uses for heat. Additionally, the room with tax was the least expensive room we had our entire trip! This will be our go to Motel in beautiful Durango. read more

This is an older motel but the rooms are great. Super clean, fantastic customer service, free full breakfast, covered heated pool. After our first night the air conditioner froze up and we were moved to the room next door immediately with no problems. The mattresses in the new room were not the same so we talked to Jessica at the front desk and right away she sent Shawn from maintenance and Chris from housekeeping to our room and they switched our mattresses with the mattresses from the other room. They definitely went above and beyond to make us comfortable! They even brought us some twizzlers! Our room was spotlessly clean. We loved that there was a sink in the bathroom and a separate sink/counter area outside the bathroom. Definitely helpful when three adults are getting ready at the same time! read more

Great part of town to be in! Booking online for a 1200 mile trip is stressful but I couldnt have been more satisfied for the reasonable rates and location of this place! The staff is friendly and worked to get us what we wanted. Best breakfast at a hotel. Didnt use pool or hot tub with a jetted tub in the room however seen plenty of kids enjoying the pool area-for a relaxing weekend or trip tho i would spring for the jacuzzi suite! #Relaxed read more

Travelling from Los Angeles to Durango, CO, I wasn't sure what to expect from local lodgins, but I have to say the Mountain Shadows Best Western is amazing. It's definitely a step above the standard and the staff insures your stay is comfortable and memorable. I highly recommend this resort motel to anyone! read more

Perfectly functional place, near the big attraction (for me!): the Durango to Silverton railroad! While I was happy to have a clean, affordable place in town, something just was off enough about the place for me to give it 3 not 4 stars. Just an accumulation of small things: rather dark decor (not cheerful), an electrical buzz outside that they eventually cleared up, and a somewhat challenging parking lot to navigate. But the room was large, shower fresh and water hot, and bed comfortable, so I would stay here again. read more

Our visit started with being greeted by the most friendly, knowledgeable, and professional desk person named Justin. He was so helpful and knew how to get us anything we needed! Our room was excellent and clean and comfy! Justin greeted us with coffee and cookies after we had been on the road all day on motorcycles. We were given a HOG discount and were offered towels to clean our bikes! This place has pool and hot tub. Would stay here and recommend this hotel!!! read more

Like most retired seniors my wife & I are always looking for good value while traveling. We probably spend more time in the rooms than the younger generation. We carry tablets for reading & keeping in touch so WiFi is a must. Our check list of amenities include, hot breakfast, refrigerator, microwave, & of course a coffee maker. We do a lot of research, reading reviews from several different resources, & normally our picks are pretty darn spot on. I'm not a fan of hotels without interior corridors, but this was really nice & well cared for. Check-in was fast & friendly. Our room was clean, quiet, & comfortable, even though the hotel, I think was full of guess both nights. Breakfast was good & plentiful. Coffee was 24/7 in the lobby with lots of options The WiFi in our room was quite slow during our 2 night stay & almost impossible to even check e-mails. But other than that our stay was quite adequate & enjoyable. We would definitely stay here again. read more

We just showed up with no reservation and they had the best rate with a king bed. Service was very good and the room was clean. Bed was comfortable enough to sleep. The TV didn't work, but they were nor to give us some money off. If your passing through Durango, this a good place to stay. read more

My wife and I stayed here 3 nights last week. We booked through HotWire. The breakfast was adequate, although we were never able to sit down to breakfast, the room was way too small for the crowd. On day 2 of our stay, our room still hadn't been cleaned at 4:00 in the afternoon, and the entire crew of maids had left for the day. The manager of the hotel cleaned our room herself, which I have to say was above and beyond the call of duty. I was a little grumpy, I wasn't feeling well, and she did everything she could. The room was nice, they've been updated with new surfaces, wallpaper, granite, etc. Nice big refrigerator and microwave. All in all, a very nice stay, but the breakfast seating and maids leave me to only give it 3 stars. read more

The staff at this hotel had the best customer service I have seen in a very long time!! I would have given 5 stars if this was The only criteria for rating. The rooms are big and spacious - could use a little updating. The pool and hot tub are in a nice outdoor dome but, could also use some ventilation and better lighting. It had a bed and a shower! So, it did for the one night we stayed! Also, a HUGE plus for us, it had a microwave and a fridge! It was clean and comfortable. A little dated, and, the door had a gap between the bottom and the floor. We put our suitcases to block the cold air. The pool is not an "indoor" pool. The pool is located separate from the hotel. Meaning if you go, say in the winter, you can not take your kids to the pool. Also, no cribs, or pack n plays. Which is an issue. Overall, it wasn't bad. Logan was fantastic in the morning! This place was great. We had a broken lock issue and the staff responded really well and tried to make things as convenient as possible for us. Cons vs. Pros Cons: The walls of room were so thin. Never have we been disturbed by noise like this before. Morning breakfast was nothing to compliment. Sheets and soap made my man have body rash. As a previous reviewer wrote, this is an older property, but it is impeccably maintained. That's a hard thing to do, folks, take a property that is a few decades old and maintain it to the extent that everything works perfectly, transparently, and elegantly. This is a reasonably priced hotel, but they have gone to great lengths to include little luxuries that often belong only to hotels in a much higher price range: refrigerator, microwave, excellent shower, additional separate vanity sink outside of the bathroom, ample sensibly placed outlets for charging our many devices, full hot breakfast including do it yourself waffle irons, great coffee from a local roaster, cookies upon check in, and maybe the most beautiful and relaxing pool / hot tub area I've ever seen outside of luxury resorts. Everyone, from the desk clerks to the housekeeping staff to the maintenance people, absolutely everyone who works here is friendly and seems happy to be here, and it shows in the service they provide. This hotel earned an unequivocal recommendation and we will most certainly be back. read more

My husband, brother, and sister-in-law are on our 3rd night here (out of a 9 night stay). So far, everything is great. Rooms are clean, bathrooms are nice, you can tell that they are slowing updating features throughout the hotel. The pool is beautiful, and a great temperature. Daily breakfast over at the lobby is your typical best western breakfast. The only downside is that the walls are a little tiny bit thin, and the parking lot can fill up quickly and you'll have to park on a back road behind the hotel and walk around. Beds cozy, rooms clean, turnover service on point, they even left us a thank you note from a tip we left them! I'd stay here again if I were staying in Durango. read more

Totally enjoyed our stay (husband and 2 teenagers) at BWMS. The staff is exceptional - helpful, friendly, energetic. Housekeeping is fast and thorough. Our room was recently updated - well appointed and clean! Hotels are a bit pricey in Durango, so for the price, $129/night, the BWMS exceeded our expectations. read more

This was a challenging review for me. I'm a frequent business traveler in the western U.S. The people here are so darn friendly and helpful I would stay here again for this reason alone and would give a five stars on this personnel quality. Coming in from a day on the road, tired and crabby didn't phase them. In fact they had me lol during checkin. Unfortunately I have a real problem paying $170/night for an older double queen room and older dated property that is maybe worth $100/night, tops. Would give 2 stars on value. It was only room in town though. Durango is a popular tourist/resort destination. Supply/demand rules here. First night the bed was so hard I was up all night and I don't usually have that problem. The TV is basic w/HBO and channels but has problems with sound/reset box. Room was clean. The breakfast although it was the basic precooked bacon and quick mix scrambled eggs it was adequate and ready promptly at 5am. And again in the morning the woman was very friendly and helpful. Great coffee here! Second night got a much better nights sleep with a new room, comfy mattress in a King bed. Room had a sofa for same price. Little more palatable for the price. Didn't use pool or hot tub. Wifi worked well Maybe the town needs a few more hotels built. More competition to hopefully get these room rates down to a reasonable level. A small business would go broke traveling here for business. read more

Stayed for two nights. The loudest cleaning crew ever. We requested them to be quiet as well as contacting the front desk. They cleaning crew started yelling back in forth when they got to work so we were awaken BOTH mornings at 6:30 am!!! Ruined our night life in Durango as we were always TIRED. By the way, that geodesic dome over the pool and hot tub is such an awesome winter retreat. When I called to ask if they were found, and was told they were, and mentioned I would come by to get them, I arrived to find him outside holding my stuff in a bag. We just spent night 12 of a 21 night trip here at the Best Western Mountain Shadow. This place was great. The room was spacious and clean and not at all "worn looking". The big king sized bed was well made with 4 pillows and looked very inviting at the end of a busy long day. It was very comfortable too. There were plenty of towels and the shower was super! The TV was very easy to understand and run. Breakfast in the morning was the same fare for a complimentary breakfast but this time the eggs were moist and fluffy and sugar free syrup for the waffles was offered. Coffee in the room was good, at breakfast great! The room rate was very good too! We would stay here again in a minute! read more

BWMS. Your hotel SLAM DUNKED THIS STAY. The room was quiet smelled great. Clean even the spots I normally check. I black light tested your room upon arrival and was satisfied enough to stay. Not so much as soap residue. The breakfast was great fresh and hey they had bacon. I mean really that gave a star in itself. I would hire your house keeping staff in a heartbeat. Better watch out. My daughter and I loved it here. The room was clean, the bathroom was really nice, they had a fridge and microwave, and there was a pool, which my daughter was very happy about.
