While California is busy charging $48 for a "deconstructed" fish taco with edible flowers and a side of attitude, our fine-fusion spot in the Northwoods is serving up elevated dishes that actually taste like they came from somewhere real -- and you won't need a second mortgage or a safe word to enjoy them. However, as with the most interesting places to eat, there is a certain way things are done here. First, you do not have many choices, and it's better that way. They know what they do well and they stick to it. First, you will have bread service and salad. The salad will be served as a quarter iceberg head, which you will cut up and apply three available dressings. The dressings can be applied individually, but are meant to be mixed. If done appropriately, you will have a soup of dressing after finishing your salad. I have never experienced a salad service like this anywhere else, and it is really fun to watch the uninitiated experience it for the first time. Second, you will get one of few protein options: beef filet, porterhouse, ribeye, or a few other, non-beef options, like swordfish, haddock, and chicken. Most people probably get the steak, and of any restaurant I have been to, this is one that you will get the exact doneness level you specify. Do not undercut your doneness to anticipate an overcooked steak - if you order medium rare, that is what you will get. The steak is delicious and is served from the open charcoal grill to your table via a charcoal heated platter, complete with a ladle of flavorful au jus. You can even watch the grill master prepare your steak; it is a unique and fun experience unlike any other restaurant I have been to. Third, you will receive a baked potato with sour cream and chives. Options aside from this are grilled onions and mushrooms. Fourth, you can get an ice cream drink for dessert, and that is about it. Very simple, very well done. It is refreshing to know a place that so understands their strong suits that they do not offer options they cannot deliver on. There are not many things left up to chance here. You will get the salad, you will get the potato, and you will get the steak or protein you ordered in the level of doneness you specify. And I am sure you will really enjoy the whole process.

Overlooking the Wisconsin River, a nice location. Some knotty pine interior finishes but not to much to be to woody. We had fish fries, which were excellent. The menu was very ample and varied. One of the owners, Richard, was bartending and was very friendly and accommodating. Many folks patronize the restaurants in town, this place is well worth the few mile drive out of town. A lot bigger than it appears from the outside. Two large rooms with plenty of seating. If you do not try Backwaters, you are missing out!

Brown Street 151 fills an important niche in Oneida County--a restaurant that offers a step up in…read morecuisine and ambience from a typical Wisconsin supper club, bar and grill, sports pub or franchise operation. While not as chic as a fine dining establishment in a metropolitan area like Milwaukee, Madison, Chicago or New York, it's as classy as it gets north of highway eight. We made a reservation for a Saturday evening - they could have accommodated us as walk-ins (and walk-ins are welcome) but I'd err on calling for a reservation and securing a table, especially on a popular day of the week. With a reservation we were promptly seated and waited on. I started with a dry martini and my wife picked a wine from a pretty decent wine list. It was a great martini--see my photos. Many of the items on the menu are what one would expect, but there were a few that piqued my interest, in particular the schnitzel. As a frequent visitor to the Austrian Tirol and Bavaria, I had to give it a try. My wife opted for salmon. The entrees included soup or salad. I went with lobster bisque and my wife went with chicken noodle soup. The bisque was rich and flavorful. Though the bread stick was out of a box as opposed to baked in house, it was an acceptable accompaniment to the soup. As for the entree, the schnitzel was prepared the way I like it--pan fried and not deep fried. With a properly breaded, seasoned and crispy crust, the pork itself was perfectly cooked. I could eat a schnitzel like this every day! The Spätzle was fine and the sauce tasted good but it was a little thin. The red cabbage was definitely sour but lacked the sweetness necessary to balance the acid. I'd suggest that the chef check out the red cabbage recipe from Alinea which has an excellent balance of sweet and sour. And one more suggestion to mimic the schnitzel I've had in the Tirol and Bavaria, a dollop of sweet jelly to spread on the cutlet--preferably a white wine jelly fortified with herbs like rosemary. That said, the dish was great and I would order it again. I only took a bite of my wife's entree, but the hollandaise and salmon was good. She especially liked the kale. To end the evening we shared a dessert. My wife makes a DG tiramisu and we've had some great tiramisu's in Italy. This one was right up there, though the espresso soaked lady fingers were a bit weak. Nevertheless, as you can see from my photo, we demolished it. A nice grappa or Tirolian schnapps would have been the perfect finale but alas the bar was not that well stocked. All in all a decent dinner, a place I will return to in the future, and a great addition to the culinary scene in the region.
