I have driven by Bert's diner on Grant Line Road in Elk Grove tons of times, but never stopped. Well that changed recently when I dropped in for a late breakfast. Since it was a weekday there was no wait time for a table. The menu as you could guess is diner themed. It has hamburgers, hotdog, soup, salad, salads, sandwiches, ice cream, milkshakes, and classic breakfast and hearty diner entrées. The ice cream is from Sacramento's own local ice cream maker, Gunther's. Yes! I ordered the Home Run breakfast special $8.99. It's not served on holidays and the weekends. It's one egg, pancake or toast, hash browns or potatoes, or bacon, sausage or ham. The pancake was as big as my Charlie Brown head, and it was fluffy with a subtle vanilla flavor. Yum. The hash browns had crispy edges, which I prefer. Classic breakfast at a good price. Luved it. The Hubs had a cheeseburger and asked for hash browns instead of fries. He dug his burger. The patty was thick and not thin, flimsy. The seating consist of tables, booths, and counter seating. My party of three plopped ourselves into a booth. I sunk into the seat, the padding is a bit worn. Not uncomfortable. But could use some plumping. The interior is clean. The whole exterior and interior had a 1950s diner theme. Very cute. The mini jukeboxes on the tables are super cute, but they don't work, just a display item. But darn cute one. Plus a great conversational piece. The customer service was terrific. Everyone (the hostess, our waiter, the other waitress) we encountered was darn hospitable and engaging making our experience all the better. read more

Not clean! Worst food I have ever had out. Grease permeated everything. It is hard to screw up deep fried Sysco but they did.

I recently visited Bert's Diner for the first time for dinner. It wasn't busy or chaotic. The diner has a classic 1950's style look which gives a fun and nostalgic vibe. We loved the jukebox/old school diner atmosphere. The menu is pretty generous and has a variety of foods from American to Mexican-American comfort foods. If you have a sweet tooth, they also have pies, milkshakes, ice cream from Gunther's and sundaes available! I ordered the mini taco salad and my daughter ordered Bert's burger. When the food came out, the portions were huge compared to other restaurants. It came out hot and satisfying. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. She came back a few times to make sure we were doing okay. Overall, we had a pleasant experience. The portions are generous and the pricing is reasonable. This makes it ideal for someone who wants something filling and affordable. We had to take our left overs home! I'd definitely recommend. read more

I've been coming here for about 20 years. I have never had a issue with this place until today. I ordered a sandwich which was fine. Then I ordered a kids hamburger and chicken nuggets for two kids. Hamburger looked it someone stepped on it before bringing it to the table. If I was working there, I would've been embarrassed to bring that hamburger to the table. The chicken nuggets were a little bit yellow and didn't taste like they usually do. After I informed the waitress (who is pregnant) seemed like she was upset because I brought it to her attention. I was very disappointed, especially because I talk so good about Bert's Dinner before today. read more

It's a consistent spot. Food is good not great. The staff is pleasant and helpful. My steak sandwich was delicious. The shakes are superb. The diner ambiance is fun. We came herewith some little people and we all had a great time. They were so entertained by the jukebox. Unfortunately our table side jukebox was busted. Also liked the normal plate size maybe others would find it underwhelming but for myself and my husband it was the perfect amount. Nothing super greasy which was pleasant. The gravy is perfect with lil bits of sausage. My main go to omelette is the Bert omelette. My moms loves the pork chops & they have different specials daily. Great diner that takes you back in time! Food is delish, service is fast and friendly and you will leave stuffed! Love the atmosphere as well, they still keep it very retro with the jukebox and you can still play songs from your table! They also have an outdoor patio as well. I was craving breakfast and splurged with the chicken fried steak breakfast with hash browns. Hubby had lunch and opted for the mushroom burger with fries. The chicken fried steak was epic, cooked perfect and huge! Hubby loved his mushroom burger and satisfied his craving for a good burger. It was our first time visiting with my family, and the service was excellent. Our server Kelsey was very friendly and made the experience even better. The great breakfast hunt brought us to the eastern edge of Elk Grove the other day. Bert's Diner is such a fun place to hang out. It has a wonderful kitschy diner vibe complete with your own personal juke box on the tables. The space was spotless and there is plenty of parking. The menu has all of the breakfast staples along with some daily specials available. We opted for the eggs Benedict off the menu and the chile verde breakfast special. Both were more than generous in size and absolutely delicious!! $40 for breakfast for 2 is pretty normal in California, but Bert's made the pricing a little more palatable. The Benedict came with two very large slices of ham and a generous amount of hollandaise. Service was friendly and efficient. Finally had an opportunity to check out Fat Mike's Pizza and was curious about the building next door. I wasn't sure if it was an operating business because you can't really see in too well. However, approaching the front door I saw hours of operation displayed and decided to come back and check it out. The inside has a 50's diner atmosphere, very unpretentious, yet inviting. The menu is extensive and covers a lot of varied avenues. To say that the portions are generous would be an understatement - they are massive ! I had the chili dog with grilled onions and fries, and my wife had the chicken chimichanga which came with side options (my wife chose cantaloupe). We both were pleased with our selections and to-go boxes were mandatory The decor could use a face-lift (broken blinds, upholstery, etc) but the 50's vibe greasy spoon will definitely bring us back to explore the culinary gems their menu jas to offer. read more

Another great experience at Bert's, first time for breakfast. I ordered the ham and cheese omelette, possibly called Old Faithful. Comes with hash browns or country potatoes, has browns please, rye toast with extra butter on the side plus Diet Coke (or Pepsi). Ordered arrived as requested, plate super hot, tons of melting cheese on top, hash browns a little extra crispy per my request and toast with extra butter. Generous cheese, fresh ham in omelette. I can write an update for Bert's Diner in or near Elk Grove and keep it at 4 stars because now I can say I've had lunch here. I was driving down Grant Line Road, which serves as a hypotenuse between Elk Grove and Rancho Cordova, and was wanting to get a big platter with an omelette. They stop serving breakfast at 1:00 p.m. and I didn't know that. One could choose from burgers, sandwiches, and other types of platters. I chose Bert's Club sandwich, a double decker, with fries as well as a Coca-Cola products soft drink. The sandwich, together with a generous serving of fries, was very tasty, and even very filling, that I skipped dinner. Not much has changed here and it has been at least a decade since I was last here. The food is very good, the service has an informal friendliness about it, and the prices are fair and fit the context. Bert's sits in a small strip mall off Grant Line Road in Elk Grove that it shares with Fat Mike's Pizza. You wouldn't expect to be driving down this country road, even though there is some encroachment of newer subdivisions, and stumble onto this metallic art deco diner that's a throwback to "American Graffiti" or something similar! I would have never found it. The way I learned of Bert's is because a childhood friend who was Cuban - and still is - was living in the "Grove of Elk" (shortened to the "the Grove," and obviously the butt of a few jokes among us) and liked this place for that occasional bountiful breakfast. I went along and got a kick out of it. Not only that, he told me that his colorful Cuban parents, who lived near him for a while, also liked coming here to eat. His mother, whose collection of cats once reached 11, would refer to Bert's Diner as "Manuel's" because there evidently once was a Hispanic employee by that name with whom she was able to converse. But, then, what would you expect from a lady (rest her soul) who once had 11 cats and, en route to Bert's, would exclaim "Ay, las vacas de Elk Grove!" while surveying what was going on outside the car's windows? Most aspects of people's Memory Lane experiences exhibit a lot of change. On the other hand, Bert's Diner seems to remain a constant. read more

We've been visiting this establishment for more than 40 years, always a great meal, friendly staff and a throwback to the Fifties.

This place is a hidden gem! If someone hadn't referred me, I probably would've never discovered it -- from the street, it doesn't look like much. But once you're inside, it's got that awesome old-timey vibe with jukeboxes at every table. Super nostalgic and welcoming. The food? Crazy good. Tons of options to choose from, and everything we've tried has been excellent. We went for my daughter's graduation breakfast, and with seven people all ordering full entrées, the bill was only around $120 -- seriously impressive for that kind of quality and portion size. The service is just as great. Everyone was friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home. We've been back multiple times, and I've loved my food every single visit. Went twice in the past few days. Once for dine in and once for take out. I liked dining in, the service was great, the price fair and the specials looked great! Our server gal was super nice! However what I ordered, the fish sandwich, was super "meh." I should of ordered something else. Classic, "should of, would of, could of." The two little pieces of fish stood out on the massive roll it laid in. Surrounded by a massive piece of lettuce, two small sliced pieces of tomatoes, two pickles and a lot of onion. A packet of tarter sauce, no vinegar and of course, a side ramekin of ranch. The onion rings were super crispy and good, so no complaints there. What my friend ordered, the club sandwich, now that looked awesome! Should of ordered that! Couple of days later, since going, I told my wife about this place. My wife woke up craving breakfast so we decided to give them a try for some breakfast! I called in, super duper rude lady answers the phone and then hangs up on me. I called back, again, super rude (perhaps that's how they treat phone customers?). Nervetheless I placed our order. At this point, I really didn't care, we were hungry and we were all in at this point. Ham omelette for my daughter. She didn't like it, she barely touched it I ate most of it, Western omelette for my wife, she liked hers. And the Tex Mex for me. Again, food was super meh. Seriously nothing to write home about. I so wanted to like this restaurant. But the combination of the super mediocre food with the super rude person on the phone, well, you guessed it; as the San Francisco news reporter referred to Yelp, here is another "cesspool of gripe" of a review lol. As a result, that's the last time they get our business. A little nicer customer service can go a looooong way. Seriously! I understand you guys get really busy, so good for you! So I hope this gripe of a review won't really affect your business, and besides nestled on the fringe of Elk Grove, I venture to say your customer base may not be the "yelping" sort of folks, or maybe they are and I was just rude there assuming/stereotyping away. Food is always okay if not great. Very busy on Sundays but that makes it feel homey and small town (which is what I like).

I visited this diner with a party of four, and unfortunately our experience was really disappointing. We were seated quickly, but that was the only positive part. We waited over 30 minutes and only received drinks -- no food, no updates, and no apology for the delay. Our server never checked in with us, and we felt completely ignored while other tables who arrived after us seemed to be served first. We ended up leaving hungry and frustrated. I understand places get busy, but good communication and basic service go a long way. Sadly, I wouldn't recommend this diner based on our experience. read more

With both being massive, such a bang for your buck! The husband and I spent the weekend in Wilton, Ca with my dad and we were a little hungover from the night before so dad says get in the car nobody is cooking! We ended up at this place where it felt like we went back to the 50s! Everything there was vintage. The food was delicious and very filling but what really had my attention was the mimosas! Me and dad had lots of fun together and the music was on point. The staff was very helpful to all of us and made it a great visit...
