It's that time again, DMV registration with the smog test registration requirement for my two cars. Since the location I used previously was no longer on Groupon, I checked out the offers and then its Yelp rating and reviews. 5 stars average on 1,081 reviews? With that impressive rating, I decided to take my car here for Berkeley Smog Test Only Center. After buying the Groupon, I followed the instructions to schedule an appointment on their website. Their appointments are in every 15 minutes. I got the Groupon at 10am on a Monday and I took the next available appointment at 1:45pm and received a confirmation email. Located a block from Ashby, I arrived at 1:35pm. I checked in and I handed my DMV paperwork and Groupon to Jesse and he had me fill out the customer info on the work invoice. They have waiting room and some chairs outside. At 1:45, my car was driven in for the check and at 1:55, my car was ready. I paid the $8.25 CA State Certificate fee and I was on my way. Fast friendly service. With the Groupon, it was $25.15, versus their web special price of $49.70 for 2000 & newer cars. They also did not have a surcharge for SUVs, which many shop charge $10 to $20. Here's the deal. Smog is bs. But how do you deal with this bs in the easiest manner possible? I've been in the east bay 4 years, THERE IS NOT A BETTER PLACE TO SMOG YOUR CAR PERIOD. Found this place via Groupon, and it was the first time getting a smog test since getting a hybrid. I booked online via their system and showed up. Unfortunately, the State's system was down and the person who helped me said it was unlikely to be restored that day. Jesse of Berkeley Smog Test does an amazing job of mobile VIN verification. I had called another business and made an appointment for 11 AM in East Oakland the day before. They did not arrive in a timely fashion (actually claimed they were in their way at 4:40 pm, 20 minutes before my mechanic closed his doors). After getting no message all afternoon I called a place in SF who said they would arrive at 4:30. The guy from SF texted me at 4:30- where was I? I replied-I'm at blank address in E. Oakland. where I said I would be in your online form I submitted earlier. He flipped out and said I'm in SF. It's going to cost you $200 and it will take me two hours to get over the bridge...Then texted me weird screenshots and blaming me for not reading the directions on his website properly. I told him no thanks. In a panic I found Berkeley Mobile VIN and Jesse answered his phone (what?! How novel!) and told he he could be there by 5:30. My mechanic said he could stay later and Jesse arrived on time. I'll leave out the part where the #1 company showed up who had ignored my text message showed up in a huff after ignoring my email that I found someone else to help me...but Jesse carefully took on the job, focused on his work despite the drama and got all the info for my DMV verification and turned my stressful day into a success. When an issue popped up with dmv I was able to double check the next week and he was able to clarify the issue. No one seems to stand by their word, work, or followup these days but Berkeley Smog and VIN verifier does. So you can get your VIN verifier as well as smog test only taken care of at the physical address in Berkeley and then the mobile work starts after 5- 5:30 from what I understood. When DMV requires a smog check for restoration DO NOT GO ANYWHERE ELSE! Jessie is THE MAN. I didn't read the small print on the Groupon paperwork that clearly stated you needed to make an appointment online. So I just show up not knowing that. Lucky for me his 12 o'clock apt didn't show so he had me in and out in 15 minutes. If only the rest of life was this easy! You are required to book an appointment for service, but even last minute are available, as there are time slots every 15 minutes. Highly recommend this place to get your smog check. It was quick and super easy and this was a designated star station as well. I made an appointment online the day before and when I arrived, there was no one else. The technician started working on my car right away after filling out some quick paperwork. They have a small waiting area with some magazines, candy/snack dispenser, and free wifi. I did not have to wait long because the smog check only took about 10 minutes and everything was done after about 15 minutes. Talk about quick service! I brought a Groupon and was able to use it to get a smog check at a discount. I didn't have issues redeeming the Groupon. This after going to the San Pablo Smog Test Only Center, which was a little closer to where I live, and their price was a bit cheaper, though Berkeley Smog Test Only Center has on their website they match other Smog Test center prices. I had a big problem with a Mr. Cao, or someone that had "Cao" in their name at the San Pablo Smog Test Only Center, so I immediately called Berkeley Smog Test Only Center to see if they would match San Pablo Smog's price, and I was told by Jessie he would. I drove over to Berkeley Smog Test Only Center, which wasn't far down the street from where I live or the San Pablo Smog place. The location appeared to be formerly a gas station, so I parked my car in the shade under the awning where gas pumps might have been. They have a waiting room with magazines and there's a Taco truck on the site, so someone could get something to eat while they were waiting if they wanted.
