(5 stars obviously) 10/10 experience! Great food, and excellent service from our server Britany! My boyfriend and I came in to Berkeleys Thursday night for the first time. They were on a wait for tables but the guy manager/host was accommodating and got us seated quickly despite the wait and not having a reservation. Our server Britany was excellent. We didn't know what to order with such a variety of options and she guided us through the menu. She suggested the artichoke dip for our appetizer and we ended up going with the cheesesteak and the chicken parmesan sandwich and they were to die for! She suggested the honey mustard for the fries which was shockingly delicious. The restaurant was very busy for a Thursday and we noticed she had a few other tables and a large group of girls but despite that still checked in on us, made conversation and always made sure we had a drink and everything we needed. We thought we were full from the large portions of food (something you don't see everywhere in Charleston) but she offered us their homemade ice cream which is made by one of the managers or owners and we couldn't say no! Thank god we didn't because the ice cream was incredible. We will definitely be back but with a reservation next time!! read more

Awesome restaurant on the corner of Rutledge and Huger street. Stopped in for a quick dinner before a basketball game at the citadel. We sat outside in the covered patio (covered, enclosed, and heated) since we visited the restaurant in January. Good selection of beer in bottles/cans and wine. Mainly sandwiches on the menu but a few larger entrees and a special too. We ordered the cheesesteak and the Reuben and both were outstanding. I would recommend getting the house chips instead of the fries as your side item with the sandwich. Service was very quick and our server was very attentive. Loved it! Every single thing. We sat in the covered outdoor patio so it was plenty warm even on a chilly day. During happy hour they do 25% off wine bottles. We tried everything and it was all amazing. Berkeley's is by far one of my husband and I's favorite restaurants in Charleston. We've been here over a handful of times and always have a great experience. I love the outdoor seating area. Even in the colder temperatures they have heat lamps so you can stay warm. I always get the eggplant parm and it by far exceeds every other eggplant parm I've gotten from any Italian restaurant in Charleston (I'm from NYC so my expectations are high). The servers are always sweet and very attentive. I had a small issue once and spoke to the owner who was more than apologetic and was eager to rectify the situation and do the right thing. I was looking for a casual meal at a place that sported fresh takes on familiar offerings, in a comfortable, classy environment without pretense. Found it at Berkeley's Cafe. Warm greetings, excellent service staff (hats off to James), smooth rhythm from the kitchen with food right on time without rushing thru the meal. All that surrounded by the sounds of the classics like Huey Lewis, REO Speedwagon, The Birds,...you get the sounds to which I'm referring, right? This place makes me remember why I love Charleston so much. I would be remiss if I did not circle back to the food. Fried calamari so crisp and lite you would think it was made by angels. The beet salad was loaded with that succulent root everyone loves to hate, spiced roasted cashews and a vinaigrette dressing that did not saturate the flavors of the prime ingredients. A crack of black pepper made me feel each bite was lifting me up on a stairway to heaven. Dessert- that incredible ice creamy delight put me in the clouds! There is a reason for the spiritual regencies here folks; this place definitely put me on cloud nine. I left there wondering if I had reached Nirvana! I shall not forget they serve the nectar of the South - the finest sweet tea with a splash of lemon over crushed ice. I can't say enough... For those who are concerned about other aspects, I offer this: * street parking is limited but there is ample parking in the business plaza across the street, on the opposite corner. * the bathroom is gender non-specific dispute the binary plaque next to the door. Visit it, and you will likely find something in the wall decor to make you smile while using this well-appointed facility. *though I'm sure they would love to have them, Elon Musk has yet to install any Tesla Supercharger stations in the area. Deep down/up King Street away from all the touristy spots lays Berkeley's. Now, I walked two miles in 90 degree weather in late July at 4 PM for this place. So how was it? Pros: - Taste. The chicken parm made me happy. That's all I can say. I ate it by myself (work trip) and smiled while eating it. - Not intimidating. The more I explored King Street the more I noticed "intimidating restaurants". This place isn't stuck up and this place won't make you feel weird. Seriously. Traveling by yourself, a lot of times you walk in to a restaurant on King Street and staff just stare at you or pretend you aren't there while solo. - Prices. This place won't break the bank. Cons: - Absolutely none. This place is a homerun. I'm a chicken parm snob with an eight year recipe at home I'm extremely proud of. Berkeley's hit the nail on the head for how I want chicken parm: Edges are crispy and crunchy, middle is soft/gooey/cheese pull, the bottom ISN'T soggy, and the red sauce isn't overly sweet. They did it perfectly. Great red sauce and the pasta is different, but I was a fan. I cannot wait to come back here. I loved this place a lot and "love" isn't a word I use a lot for places to eat. Sure, sure, I "like" a lot of places but "love" is a short list. Berkeley's is some of the best chicken parm you'll have anywhere. read more

The artichokes in the dip tasted like they have been in a brine for awhile which I've had better. Still decent. I got the spicy shrimp small plate and it is not something I'd typically share. It would be difficult to share due to the grits but I enjoyed it as an entree! The ambiance is pretty relaxed. Something casual. New spot in town and I am a self-appointed sandwich connoisseur, so this place was a must-try and it was not a disappointment! We started with some frozen drinks. They had 2 options of a Pinot Freezio and a frozen sangria. We asked our server for her recommendation, and she suggested doing both with a swirl- presentation was beautiful and they were very good. The artichoke and kale gratin was a great start and a fresh twist on your regular spinach dip appetizer. It was super cheesy, warm, and had chunks of artichoke to slather atop freshly made focaccia- chef's kiss. Between the 4 of us, we ordered the Reuben, French dip, cheesesteak, and the Parmesan chicken cutlet Sammie and split them 4 ways. All of the sandwich breads were super soft and fresh, and had a good meat to bread ratio. The parm cutlet sandwich could have used a little more marinara, in my opinion, but that chicken was breaded and cooked perfectly. The Reuben is always a classic and they definitely did it justice. The cheesesteak and French dip rolls were so good, and the meat melts in your mouth. I couldn't decide which was my favorite! The pub chips were amazing also- super crispy with great seasoning, and who doesn't love good pub chips!? The inside area was a little small, but the bar area was roomy and the whole place had a cool vibe. The patio outside was spacious and the service was solid. This neighborhood gem is incredible. The owners are from NJ and use fresh, quality ingredients to bring the seemingly simple menu items to the next level. The rolls for the sandwiches are from Amoroso's in Philadelphia. Atmosphere is casual, comfortable, and I love the variety between the inside/outside bar, spacious patio, and quaint dining room. Love the people that work here - super friendly and helpful. This establishment also makes fantastic food and gives great portion sizes. The burrata plate and anything with the polenta is absolutely worth getting. I crave their croutons. The reason they are getting one star is because they don't have baby changing tables in either of their two private bathrooms. I had to change my newborn on the floor. There were multiple families there with babies and toddlers that would 10000% benefit from having changing tables. For a neighborhood joint, they are doing a disservice to families who go there. As much as I love their vibe and food I just can't go their until they get their act together and get at least one baby changing table. read more
