Chandler Manning is a an acute, amazing doctor. Unfortunately, his staff, not so much. I'd explain further, but I've already today spent enough energy re-explaining something blatantly obvious to one of his staff members, and I'd prefer not to repeat myself (again). Not sure his name, but he kept raising his voice, almost threatening. [10:15ish] I came on time for the appointment but the door was locked. I knocked multiple times. [10:21] I was let in the waiting area, checked in. [10:45] this guy, working under the doctor, tells me I came in at 11:26. Late. And I'm looking at my watch thinking, man is this guy in the future? So I corrected him, his voice raises. So I ask again, what time did I come in? [to be continued]. H & I have been going to BEC for the last 3 years. Located in the Memorial City Memorial Hermann campus, the office is easy to access & there is always plenty of parking. The technicians are very professional as they run you through the usual eye health checks before seeing the doctor. We were seeing Dr. Groff but she moved to their downtown location so our recent visit Dr. Mann did our examination. I really liked him! Soft spoken & amicable he treats your peeps with gentle care. Before you know it, the appointment was completed & I was at the front desk checking out. Jenny was super friendly & we chatted whilst she figured out my billing & ordered my contact lenses. Chandler Mann is a young and well informed optometrist that I enjoyed meeting after transferring from my old Berkley office in Clear Lake--I like my optometrists down there as well, but Chandler is up on the latest advancement on liquid filled hard contacts. The office at Frostwood can do better. They failed to notify me that the office was closing down and that I needed to reschedule. I wasted time showing up. Next, my son's optometrist at SAMS Club only charged the standard $60 insurance visit fee while Berkley nickeled and dimed me for two additional charges for equipment used during the visit. I can't say for a fact my son wasn't examined by the same machines, but Im sure he was. To me, these additional charges are a way for Berkley to make more money. I think that should have been explained upfront and not surprise me when checking out and challenged by me. I knew from other reviews the office at this location is not the best when it comes to staff. The doctors all seem to be great, but Berkley is an inefficient money office, but I keep going back after 7 years--for the optometrists. read more

Came here for my eye exam and corneal abrasion and was greeted by friendly staff however, Dr. Steffensen just kept looking at me up and down and seemed disinterested in my issue. I initially said I didn't want new glasses and as I finished my exam they led me to the sales person even after I said I didn't want new glasses. Won't come here nor recommend to anyone. read more

I have always had a good experience with Berkeley Eye Center. I am usually a patient at the Kingwood location and LOVE Dr. Palumbo... This office is a different story. I came to the Memorial City location because it is close to work and where I now live. Dr. Groff is GREAT and very sweet. She knows her stuff. I have no complaints about visiting her. The clinic was clean and nice, just hard to find within the building. I came for my yearly eye exam/ contact fitting. I was expecting this appointment to take about an hour. I was in the office for over 2 hours. I had lots of waiting time and there did not seem to be many patients at the time. (Also, I am not a patient with a difficult prescription, it has been the same for the like 7 years) The glasses selection was disappointing and I did not find any styles I personally liked that were in my budget (with insurance). I happily ordered my contacts and left empty handed without glasses. Next year I will take the time to drive to Kingwood for a faster appointment. read more

Our entire family has been seeing Dr. Groff for years. My husband had multiple complications and Dr. Groff has always provided the best care for him and my entire family. But this review is to recommend and thank the terrific staff in the eye glasses center. What fun to pick out new glasses. Not only did I get the best frames for my facial structure they were perfect for my coloring. They were not ones I would have every picked out for myself but I have been complimented so many times. I've been coming here since they were partnered with Dr. Mann and it is probably as good as it gets. Upon moving to Houston 10+ yrs ago, I had been to quite a few different optometrists and always disappointed with the results. I would have trouble seeing after their quick little exams, but they would always swear that my prescription was correct and they needed to look no further. That all changed when coming here. If I am not sure on the prescription or having issues with the contacts, Dr Garza or his nurse will gladly do a quick exam to make sure all is well. I also find Dr. Garza to be great for those of us with particularly bad astigmatism. He has kept on top of new releases on contacts and usually suggests the latest one. And unlike many optometrists I've visited, they check for everything here during the normal exam. I have recently had an issue with my eyes that was more medical (iritis) and got in the same day. Dr. Garza is seeing me weekly until it clears up and has even made sure my insurance plan approves the brand name rather than the generic of the drops he has prescribed. After moving to Katy, I did try another doctor closer to home, but find the care I get here more than makes up for inner-loop traffic! read more

My annual eye exam occurs once every three years, so this time I decided to give Berkeley Eye Center a try. I am so glad I did. The office is located inside of a medical building and there is plenty of parking. It was very easy to find. Upon walking in I was given some forms to fill out, and soon thereafter I was ushered around for all of my various eye tests. Dr. Groff took her time and explained the state of my eye health to me. She answered all of my questions, and showed me those cool pictures of the inside of my eye-balls. After my exam I check out their glasses showroom. They have a great selection of glasses, and it is fun to try on all the different types. They come in all shapes, sizes, materials, and price points. There were even some that were covered in suede. I ordered some glasses and they were ready within a week, (no, I didn't order the suede ones). Dr. Groff and her staff were very friendly, knowledgeable, and made the whole experience as painless as possible. I think my eye exams may actually become annual. read more

I've been going to Berkeley for what feels like half a decade now. Haven't looked back. They make you feel special, exclusive, and cared for. Kim Bertrand is my favorite optometrist and if I can't schedule an appointment with her in Katy, I don't mind driving to Memorial to see her. She talks to me like an educated friend, and keeps it light, yet professional. On my last visit, Kim and Patrick were phenomenal helping me pick out my glasses. I told them color and profile I was looking for, and the second one they showed me was THE pair. I was very impressed with their ability to listen and know exactly what I was looking for. I have been going to this place for 3-4 years and I trust the optometrists who work here. Dr Groff was amazing but she moved to downtown site so I saw dr Mann who is very charming guy. The reason for my four stars is the fact that they over billed me on contact lens fitting exam but they working on correcting this issue after I called. However I still would go back to Berkeley eye center and see dr Mann and everyone should be aware of their coverage by insurance to make sure nothing is over billed. read more

My experience here was the most enjoyable visit to an optometrist I have had in my life. The staff was very helpful, and quick to answer my questions and make sure I had all of the information I needed. Everything felt streamlined, especially with the ability to fill out most of the patient information online before visiting the clinic. They were very interested in making sure I got exactly the correct prescription I needed in each eye, and informed me of other ocular problems that I've had, but no other doctor told me about. My wait time for Dr. Groff to come to finish up the exam was less than three minutes, which is about half the time I have experienced elsewhere. I would highly recommend anyone to come to this office when in need of these services. Especially with the use of technology to make things much quicker. Appointment reminders, and eye glasses notifications, can be sent out via text message or call, and the majority of the office where patients are seen is in soft light, in case anyone is having their eyes dilated. read more

I wear eyeglasses and contacts and have for 30 years. In spite of there being lasik and other options, I choose to keep the tried and true, and Dr. Groff makes it easy to do so. She always answers my many questions and has a very pleasant demeanor. I never have to wait long and always have a great experience at the Memorial City office that Dr. Groff runs. One time, I went to another location and the glasses manufacturer messed up my prescription. I took those glasses to the opticians at Dr. Groff's Memorial City location and they quickly diagnosed the problem with the glasses and rectified the situation. Aside from all that, Dr. Groff has a dry humor that makes visits with her quite enjoyable. Highly recommend this D.O. and optician office. read more

Ok, this is a two part review. This is my second visit to the BEC on Frostwood in the last 3 years. First, on both occasions Dr. Groff was great, and she and her assistant did a wonderful job of making sure I received the correct prescription for my eyes. Dr. Groff is a little more friendly than the office assistant. I would definitely recommend Dr. Groff. The reason I am rating this location much lower is because of the optical center. While the technicians in the OC are friendly, the OC is poorly managed. It took over 6 weeks to receive the glasses I order, and after 4 weeks I called the office three times. When I called the office, I had to leave a message, and they did not bother to call me back. After the 6th week I called the office, and I was able to speak to a tech in the OC. They said my glasses were in - but they didn't bother to inform me they were in, and I have no idea how long they were and just waiting for me to pick them up. So when I arrived to pick up my glasses, the lens where the wrong shape and the coating applied to the lens where poorly applied. They had to send the glasses back to optical lab to replace the lens. They were unable to tell me when they might be done. I basically have been waiting to long with no communication about when to expect the lens to be replaced. I am hoping I do not have to wait another 6 weeks. I will not go back to Dr. Groff's office because of the optical center's lack of communication and quality control. This is an update to my original review dated 9/20/2017. BEC read my review on facebook, and immediately contacted me to understand what happened and to assure me that this was not the way they normally conduct business. The process took three additional visits to get my lens/glasses correct. Through out the process BEC stayed in contact with me and updated my along the way so I knew when to expect my glasses. I was able to pick up my glasses on 10/11/2017. The personalize attention from BEC was refreshing, and they made me feel like I was a VIP. read more

Dr. Mann and his staff are 5-star! Dr. Mann has a great bedside manner and seems to listen to my concerns, as well as thoroughly explains the options for my eyes, which have become more troublesome with the onset of an autoimmune disease. The -1 star is due to the exorbitant cost of glasses. I don't need designer frames but that seems to be the only option, and with the price coming to over $1000 (frames, lenses, and whatever coatings...), I am very thankful for my insurance. It still cost me just under $400 out of pocket, though. I'm also concerned because the person adding up all of the costs and applying discounts did so with a hand calculator, which leaves room for human error. There was no way I could verify the total cost myself. This always seems a little questionable as my insurance is going to foot the majority of this exorbitant bill. Next time I need glasses, I'll take my prescription to an online service I have always used in the past. read more

Already had my eye exam but couldn't find the glasses I liked anywhere in the Memorial City Mall . Noticed that Berkeley Eye Center was in my insurance and happened to have a deal. Wasn't expecting to find the place on the second floor of the hospital but couldn't believe my luck when I found both glasses and sun glasses. I have been seeing the Berkeley Memorial team now for several years as part of my annual eye exam routine. Dr. Groff and staff are exceptional as it pertains to conducting a thorough exam. This year I am trying contact lens. Dr. Groff is working very patiently with me as I try several different types of lens. The doctor is very good but she doesn't spend much time on you, the whole eye exam is done by an assistant but not the doctor. The doctor only came in for contacts fitting. The front desk woman is very RUDE and discriminated, very impatient in other words - very unprofessional and unwilling to help. The waiting time is also very long, they just leave you in the exam room or the waiting area forever even if they are not busy. Also when I called to purchase contacts through the phone, the same front desk woman who helped me in the office answered the phone and was telling me they will have to charge shipping fees even if it is shipped to their office for contacts last less than a year, but when I called at another time speaking with a different person, I was told it is free if I pick it up in the office(you don't have to purchase a year's contacts to get free shipping; only if you ship it to your home there is the shipping). I got confused since different people were telling me different things. Because of this horrible front desk woman, I will NEVER come back. read more

To setup an appointment was quick and easy, I called on a Friday and was able to get in to see Dr. Groff on Monday morning. The staff was very nice from the time I signed in from the time I walked out the door. I only had a few minute wait. Then the exam began right away, I forgot the sweet ladies name, but she was really nice. After putting drops in my eyes for the dilation I was sent to another room to hang out till the dilation was complete. Dr. Groff join in on the exam to finish things off. She was nice and professional. I asked about LASIK and the costs. She broke it down for me, from the exam, process, and potential costs. Overall, the location was perfect and the best exam experience I have had in awhile. I would recommend this location to everyone.
