Bergey's Breadbasket & Barnyard (BBB) is a small bakery/sandwich deli/ice cream shop on a family owned, working farm that offers a petting farm. -- The Barnyard -- BBB's petting farm was the highlight that prompted us to head over from VA Beach. BBB offers an enjoyable petting farm with opportunities for children (& adults) to interact with, visit, and pet the animals. Overall the animals appeared well cared for. The visiting areas include clear signage and while worn were well kept. There was very little shade except for near the enclosures for the cows and "kitty city" and inside the barn itself (ponies, bunnies). The early afternoon was sweltering in the August heat. -- The Animals -- BBB's farm animals include goats and kids, cows and calves, piglets, ponies, cats and kittens, bunnies, and more. You can offer feed to the goats from outside the enclosures (which are clearly marked with warnings that the larger ones may headbutt the pen). Or you can go inside the pens for a closer visit of some of the animals like the goats, piglets, and kitties, and there's an area in the barn to sit and hold the bunnies. BBB's website talks about bonding with the animals, and being able to go in many of the enclosures and feed the calves a bottle offered meaningful opportunities for interaction. My favorite was the very friendly brown & white cow, and my toddler's favorite was the piglets, who he joined in their pen and gently pet. -- Visitors & Other To-Dos -- While it wasn't crowded, there were several families visiting at the time of our visit; parents supervised their children while the children were interacting with the animals. We were glad to see guests treating the animals well! There is a sandbox, an area with pedal tractors, and basketball hoops, so there's a lot to keep family members busy. -- Ice Cream & Seating -- We stopped by the market and tried their fresh ice cream--delicious! There isn't room to eat inside, and there are limited chairs on the porch and limited covered outdoor picnic tables, so without many shade options, we didn't stay to try out the sandwiches. The flowers make for a pretty sitting area and despite it being mid-afternoon, there were customers enjoying BBB's fare. -- Prices -- Costs are more than reasonable. Prices (as of 8/14/21): Petting Farm Admission $4. Ages 65 & older are free. (Not posted/guaranteed, but our baby was free.) Add ons: $3/small goat feed cup, $5/bottle for calves, $5/pony ride (45 lb maximum), $0.25/handful of goat feed. Hours: Monday - Saturday 9am - 6pm. I've heard so much about this breadbasket located in Chesapeake and I was able to head out there on an off day. When you walk in you feel like you are going back in time to an old-school sandwich shop! There were so many options but I finally selected the Italian sandwich on dill bread with old-school soda pop. You order in one spot and then pay at a register that's at the front of the restaurant and wait for your name to be called. Once I received my sandwich I sat on their porch areas that had rocking chairs. When I bit into that sandwich I was in sandwich heaven. The sandwich was perfectly made, meaning it had the perfect bread to meat to veggie to Mayo ratio. You could taste the freshness of the dill bread and the quality meat products they are using. Came by today because everyone has said their pies are amazing. I got a blueberry one straight from the oven. It was $18.99. I got home and looked at the ingredients and they use a gel as a thickener and you can tell. It's not 100% home made and not that good. It's sickeningly sweet, and the gel congeals into a gross goop. If I died and went to heaven, Bergey's pie would be on the menu! We tried the strawberry pie for the first time and the pie was beyond excellent. The strawberries were abundant, fresh, and juicy. The glaze was the perfect balance of thick enough to hold the berries but not gelatinous. The crust was flaky and good. Everything about it was delicious. My father is a pie connoisseur and picky about his pies and said this was the best strawberry pie he ever had. In fact that was the opinion of everyone at dinner. The whipped cream and the ice cream was amazing, tasty, and can absolutely tell it was home made. Never heard of this place and have lived in the area all my life. Can't believe how great the icecream was. You get the choice of a cup, cone, or waffle cone. I had one scoop of the Coconut Icecream. It was delicious! It didn't taste like it was made of artificial flavoring and had real chunks of coconut. If you think the food is great, you should check out the free petting farm directly behind it. We saw all the farm animals from baby bunnies, goats, pigs, ponies, and chickens. We were visiting from out of town and stopped on a Saturday afternoon just for fun. We ordered sandwiches and ice cream. I got pumpkin ice cream--something I've never had before. It was delicious. Tasted just like pumpkin pie. Hubs got a flight of Octoberfest ice cream and really enjoyed it. Our sandwiches were just average--too much bread. Hubs got a roast beef and I got a turkey club. I was also disappointed that they were given to us in single use plastic containers. I assumed they would be a little more environmentally friendly but no. This is really the main reason for taking one star away. There are tables and places to sit outside--none inside. Wow! This place is a must visit restaurant, ice cream shop, and petting zoo! In the petting zoo, they have ponies, bunnies, goats, and pigs. When you buy tickets you can also ask for a cup of goat food for purchase as well to feed the goats. It's a small cup and I think it was around $3. You're allowed to get into the goat and pig pens and you're allowed to hold the rabbits as well. The restaurant and ice cream shop are simply delicious. You order sandwiches at a stand in front of the sandwich menu and ice cream in front of the icecream stand. There are so many happy, smiling faces working behind the counter. This place is such a gem! My daughter stated that she would not be making anymore sandwiches, because the one she got here is the only sandwich she will ever eat again lol. My husband got the turkey bacon club and said he enjoyed it. You're able to order a half or a whole sandwich and while my family ordered a whole sandwich, I got half a roast beef and half a pork BBQ. The roast beef was spicy and sweet. It was an interesting sandwich and very good. My favorite was the pork BBQ. That was one of the best BBQ sandwiches I've had. I also had a brownie sundae with "icecream for breakfast" flavored icecream. That flavor is my new favorite icecream! We went for the fall activities. We had a blast. They now charge a fee for the petting area which I feel is fair, they have lots of animals to feed and care for. I like that there is not a limit on the time you can spend visiting their establishment. There is plenty of extra parking in the back. All of the animals appear well cared for. Our favorite are the goats, there always seems to be baby animals when we visit. They had baby goats, kittens and piglets this time. You can sit in the pens and pet them, my toddler especially loves holding and rocking the goats and kittens to sleep. The corn maze was fun as well as the wagon ride, they also have a toddler/child corn maze with a slide. They have the best ice cream available in the small restaurant, if you go early enough they have mostly everything available on the menu. I wouldn't say this is a toddler friendly menu unless your child likes sandwiches and chips which mine doesn't. As far as social distancing goes, there are signs reminding people to stay 6 feet apart, there is an outside sink with plenty of soap for hand washing as well as one bathroom. They have hand sanitizer available as well. We went on a weekend, the amount of people inside the restaurant and outside all through out the farm made it impossible to social distance. I was shocked to see such a huge crowd of people, most not wearing masks. There does not appear to be a limit on the amount of people visiting. Totally worth the trek out to the countryside of Chesapeake to spend some time on this cute little farm. We dragged our 15 year old son with us and I dare say he enjoyed himself!! We bought the $10/pp ticket which included the corn maze, hay ride and corn shooter. The corn maze was great, not too big so you won't get lost for hours. Just right! The hay ride was nice and gives an opportunity to relax and take in the view of surrounding landscape. The corn shooter was fun and unique. You can buy extra chances of shooting the corn for $1. The animals are all adorable. Pigs, goats, cows, ponies, donkey, etc. If you have small children they will love this place as there is lots for them to do and explore. They can climb on have, pet the animals, ride a pony, ride mini tractors, see the sunflowers, and more. We ended with getting a sandwich is the little cafe/shop. Went to this place on my birthday and had a lot of fun! I'm a big animal lover so this was a huge deal. They had a lot of different animals to pet and hold. ONE MAIN POINT of improvement though (why I took of one start for now)- I think there should be staff members in the barns or walking around more to assist with how to approach animals/how to hold them properly. I witnessed a lot of rowdy kids and there was a part with baby bunnies that you could hold. It just made made me worried because I didn't want any of the animals to be handled incorrectly! This is one of the neater things to do in Chesapeake, especially with children. So Bergey's when I was a kid was actually a dairy farm and they delivered all of our milk to our home. Visiting even then was cool. Now it's more of a farm/deli/ice cream shop/gift store. But it's still fun and still holds that same charm. The ice cream shop, deli, and gift store are all in one. There's a few tables in there for guests, and there's seating outdoors. The ice cream is amazing. You can get a variety of flavors in a pretty decent selection of ways. Don't forget the sprinkles for nostalgia! They sell a few snack and lunch items. They have homemade pies, cheeses, etc for sale. And a good amount of gift items with a down home farm'y feel. The farm itself is a petting farm. You can go through and interact with the animals. It's a favorite to go in the spring so you can love on all the babies. The petting area is free, but they except donations throughout at donation boxes. I always feel that it's more polite to always buy something when visiting as well, so we always do ice cream before leaving. Prices are very decent and far. It's farm, so it doesn't have all the bells and whistles. And it's not suppose to. If you have little ones, I urge you to go! Enjoy it. It's a great experience. A terrific second visit and so happy I was in the area. The key is "in the area" because few are. It is very rural area so many will need to make a special trip or be in the area. Today I pulled the trigger on driving an additional 6.5 mile to enjoy them again. The last time at Bergey's was during the height of the Fall season with pumpkins for sale and their petting zoo in operation. It's a much busier time than my visit today which per an employee is the slowest time of the year. Signage just off the road is large enough where you wont miss the turn off. Parking was plentiful today in their gravel lot. No debris in sight as I exited my car. The country store is very quaint looking with a wooden porch and chairs. There are out building behind. I am reviewing the store only. The first time I got a hot breakfast which was okay. The banana pie was super yum and Larry coffee strong. I also sampled the oreo ice-cream which was incredible. Today it was their pecan cinnamon rolls which were out of this world delicious. A nice touch is if they would have heated it up, or at least offered. The staff was friendly and I met the owner and his brother who was visiting from Lancaster PA. The store itself is not big, but they do sell food items that are unique from either local to our area, or small business from other areas of the state. In some cases surrounding state such as their coffee which comes from Raleigh, NC. Their milk is from Western VA. So what do they make in house you make ask, well a lot. Their bread, pies, cakes and famous ice-cream. This most certainly is a big reason they have a strong local following. I found the prices to be fair. Several customers during today's breakfast were called by first name. If your looking for the restrooms you will not find them in the store. They are in the rear with access outside. I found them spacious with proper supplies and everything functioned. I cannot easily be a regular, they are just too far...like over an hour far. But I would like to return with family in toe to try their ice-cream which they are best known for outside the bread. These type of local businesses cannot easily be found anymore, especially in our developed area of Virginia Beach. There is just something refreshing knowing the money you spend will go right back to the the pockets of our local economy. Also the fact that if you have a compliment, complaint, or suggestion you can discuss with the owner who is on the premises. If you have a sweet tooth, their cheese Danishes are the creamiest ever. If you want fresh bread they're rocking it. The rolls they serve with the BBQ are the best I've ever had (in America. Focaccia in Italy is world's best) and their cheese biscuits are good heated up with an additional slice of cheddar in the middle. The cream pies? Pricey and worth EVERY cent!! For me, their piece de resistance though is the chicken pot pie. Chunks of breast meat, fresh crunchy veggies, creamy gravy and the crispiest pastry this side of France. I haven't had everything but I'm making my way through the menu. The BBQ wasn't for me though. I like mine more VA style than NC and theirs was too dry for me. My husband LOVED it and the little kick was a bonus to him. A tip: if you're picking up a dinner on the way home from work, order ahead so they can save you some. I love this place so much!! Located in the countryside of Chesapeake, this small family owned business offers a variety of homemade goods. I first came here years ago with my family after hearing about how great their apple pies were. After our first visit, we continue to go back often. Upon entering I'm greeted with a warm welcome from Mr. Bergey and the rest of the staff. Even when I'm here without my parents, they ask how they're doing. Everyone here is just so friendly! They are mostly known for their ice cream and pies. Both are homemade and the flavors will change seasonally. Their ice cream is inexpensive and so creamy!! It is one of my top places to grab ice cream. Their pies are also delicious, but my favorite is their Apple Dumpling. They're only available for a short time during the fall/winter. They also sell sandwiches, sweets, milk, etc. You really won't be disappointed no matter what you try! They also sell fresh produce and plants grown from either their garden or somewhere locally. One of my favorite things about this place is the petting zoo. Follow around back down the gravel road. You will reach a barn and several corals with various animals you can play with. They have goats, sheep, pigs, cows, etc. There are vending machines scattered around that sell goat feed for 25 cents. If you come in the spring, you'll usually see newborn animals, such as goats and piglets. The petting zoo is free but it is preferred to make a donation which contributes to the maintenance of it. Also, if you're looking for some fun things to do, make sure to check their fliers and events. They have seasonal activities (pumpkin patch, corn maze, sunflower picking, etc).
