When you go to a brewery, you're not exactly expecting a great meal. You want two things: tasty craft beer, and a passable menu to satiate your appetite while you catch up with friends. Benson Brewery provides both, and delivers surprising results on the food side of things. I visited with a good friend who swore by the food menu, and his promises didn't disappoint. The pretzel sticks are an absolute must for anyone who likes a good soft pretzel. They're pillowy soft, have a nice buttery sheen, and include just the right amount of salt. They're served with a delightful beer cheese sauce and an IPA-infused mustard that's so delicious I could drink it through a straw. The most surprising thing were the seitan wings. I'm not a vegan by any means, but if I close my eyes and took a bite of one of those, I couldn't tell the difference between it and a boneless wing. I don't know how BB managed to turn this meat substitute into something so close to the original, I don't know. But I'm impressed. I also ordered the Cuban sandwich, which didn't stand out all that much, but it was a solid meal. Two things I really appreciated - the bread was finished on the griddle, so it had a nice crust on the outside while remaining soft in the middle. And the ham had a nice blackened bark that paired really well with the aforementioned IPA mustard from Heaven. The restaurant is pretty casual, and the patio seating is comfortable and beautiful. BB has a rotating menu of craft beers, and everything I tried was really good. If you're at all a fan of IPAs, I recommend the Hazy Hare, a New England IPA with some nice citrus notes and a bit less of a bite than the traditional IPA. Benson Brewery provided exactly what I was looking for from this experience, if not a bit better. Come for the brews and the good times, but don't be afraid to get into the menu as well. read more

Came here for a beer, meal, and to watch the Duke v. South Carolina game. My dining companion ordered their porter while I opted for their coffee stout. Both beers were quite good. We ordered their roasted brussels sprouts appetizer, which was a flavor punch directly to the face (in the best and most wonderful way). We also shared an order of their fish and chips--beer battered mahi mahi on a bed of beautifully seasoned fries. The beer batter was just right and their creamy vinegar tartar sauce was the perfect accompaniment. Truly, one of the best baskets of fish and chips I've had in a good long while. The only thing that was off about the experience was the service. By that, I don't mean our server--she was lovely. But, the timing of the clearing of tables was seriously lacking. There were 6 un-bussed tables surrounding us as we sat down. Dinner, 2 beers, and a basketball game later, there were still 6 un-bussed tables (7, if you include ours). I wanted poutine but they were out. so I ordered a Cuban, which I've had before and enjoyed. my order was ready on time. I walked a block to the bar where I was eating. it didn't have time to get cold. the fries had been put in the fryer a second time to warm them up. I know this because I've worked fast food. They were limp, extremely greasy and cold anyway. The sandwich had very little meat and was very dry. This is not my first bad experience with their food. Located smack dab in the middle of Benson, this place will have you smacking the person seated next to you it's so yummy!!! The menu has just the right amount of options and offers up the perfect variety to please any and everyone's tastebuds. The Seitan wings as an appetizer are amazing - saucy, crunchy and a lot of them to go around! Another appetizer I recommend (and ONLY when it's done right) is the mf POUTINE. For main dishes, you cannot go wrong ordering the banh mi - that's all I'll say about that. My vegans, babies, no need to worry they do vegan very well. And for those that do not discriminate when it comes to food, they welcome you with open arms too. Favorite favorite in Benson and it always will be. Their patio is to die for. So many umbrellas and picnic tables so you can be outdoors without burning in the sun. Indoor seating and street side seating. They've seemed to rebrand with a mysterious looking bunny, also revamped their bar area and I am here for it. I tried the peach seasonal cider - zero regrets. Pretzels are the best in the world.... for serious. Breadstick style, light and floofy with salts on top. The cheese is disgustingly good... I could bathe in it, without a second thought and the mustard is semi sweet and grainy. I crave these all the time. Tell your Mother and your friends. We tried the vegan wings per our waiters suggestion... half with bbq, half hot (more so mild) they tasted just like chicken wings... but crispier... really good and would order again. Daughter got the kids mac which is basically the cheese they use for the pretzel dipping, BUT ON CORKSCREW PASTA! Adults have no qualms finishing what leftovers the kids dont eat. The food does take a bit but one should'nt mind waiting for a masterpiece. I've honestly never had a bad item here. And I am done here... but not really. I came here looking for a few unique beers I'd seen in their website, but apparently they don't update either it or it's social media with new beer releases/what's available because the three I was looking forward too were nowhere to be found. The beer that I ended up getting wildly disappointing. With such a cool logo they didn't really use it on any of their merchandise and what they had for sale was lackluster. We were only there for a drink, but it didn't get a one star because the food looked pretty tasty. I'd imagine it's tastier than the beers. read more

Time for a much needed review update of Benson Brewery! Last night's dinner varied greatly from our first experience during restaurant week - in a good way - the whole meal was was absolutely stellar. Kudos to the new chef! We started off with beer flights again (how could you not?) And while I wish I could tell you which varieties I thoroughly enjoyed this time, it was almost more fun to leave the picking in the hands of our very capable server. Three appetizers started off the feasting... Peppadew Poppers with chevre | prosciutto | chilies, Craft Sausage Platter with house-made mustard and pickled carrots, and the star of the show... White Rabbit IPA Jarred Olives with spent grain bread | select local cheese (more pickled carrots and onions!) While the poppers were prepared slight differently than last time, they were no less intriguing. But the olives really shone. Something about beer and olives maybe? Or was it the crusty bread? The charred jalapeno with goat cheese? Who cares?! It was so, so good. The entree I decided on - with a bit of guidance - was Steak Frites, with its sweet sweet Dunkel jus and pan roasted Nebraska hanger steak, cooked a perfectly medium rare. Cool spot for a quick beer. Their food menu is a little limited for me but it's your typical bar food. The cool thing about the brewery is they have seasonal beers on tab - while supply last. I like the vibe...sports bar mixed with a gastropub. Great burgers and sandwiches, nice beer selection (ovbi) and a decent craft cocktail list. I ordered the shaved prime rib sandwich with fries...very pleased! They scrounged around for a GF bun (very happy about that!) and the shaved prime rib had great tenderness and flavor. The pickled jalapeño added a nice kick of heat and the melty cheese melded the whole dish together. I got a basil gin cocktail that was fresh and not too sweet. My dining companions ordered several types of beers and a flight, and seemed to enjoy them quite a bit. Our server was very kind and accommodating. We had a reservation for 15-18 people at another restaurant in Benson for our daughter's 21st birthday . We showed up and they did not have our tables reserved (even though they were made 2 weeks ago and we had an email confirmation). The person at the front just kept saying that he was sorry that this reservation wasn't communicated to him and there was nothing he could do. I asked him if he could suggest another place in the area that might be able to accommodate our party (since we had people that were already en route) and he said no....not empathic and not willing to do anything to make the situation better. Luckily we walked into Taco Co. and it was a completely different experience. Here is the review that I posted for them: I spoke to Bailey and told her the situation. Even though they were extremely busy, she told us that she would make room for our party so that we could celebrate with our daughter and friends. She gave us a timeline, made a suggestion about where we could go until our table was ready, and even held our centerpiece for us, which was very much appreciated. Once we were seated, we had an amazing night. Ryan, our waiter, was TERRIFIC, fast service, friendly and a lot of fun! Food and drinks were fantastic and everyone had a great time. Bailey and Ryan, you saved our celebration - thank you both so much and everyone in our party was also grateful and plans to return in the near future!! We were there this week and I couldn't have been more disappointed in how downhill this place has gone. It was disgustingly dirty in there from the floors looking like they hadn't been swept in months to boxes of stuff sitting out on the bar cluttering the area up. Then, as if I wasn't disgusted enough, the bartender, cook and waitress decided they would all take a shot right there in front of us. So I didn't think it could get better than their beer and wings but during my last visit I reallllyyyyy tested the wait staff and our server was so sweet about. I was being a little high maintenance with all my questions and she was very lovely. We sat outside and she was super attentive about water and refills for other drinks. When it came to the menu she let me combine two of the salads to make my own "meg salad" and shout out to the chef for also allowing that. Overall, a decent place. A bit pricey for the food but it offers a wide selection on the menu. From Mac and cheese to black bean burgers, there are options for all different platelets. I can't remember the names of the drinks (last time we went was in September) but really good. Not too strong and feels bit more fruity than anything. Service both times we went wasn't very good, but as long as you're with good company you won't notice! read more

I usually have a positive experience but this past Friday night was a different story. We had a large group of 10+ ordering food and beverages. The waitress was not friendly, and actually skipped over three people on food orders. We had to find her afterwards to put our orders in. She also actually refused to take a food order on one member of our group for no reason. Following that, our food took forever to come out. The waitress was not by at all while we waited. I was looking to get another drink as we sat there but she never checked in on us so I didn't bother. Finally, our checks came out in complete disarray, everyone's food and drink orders were on the wrong tickets so we spent a good amount of time just fixing the receipts so we could get out of there. I'm a fan of Benson Brewery. In my experience dining there, they have two to four vegan options at a time, and all the ones I've tried are good. I've tried their black bean burger, their seitan wings, banh mi sandwich, seitan breakfast tacos on their brunch menu, and the mac and cheese they used to have but got rid of (I loved it so I wish they'd bring it back). The black bean burger is flavorful and has fresh toppings, but is mushy like most bean patties are, which is whatever. The seitan wings are one of my favorites but that's because I'm a buffalo sauce fiend. Although the wings have great crunch and flavor in the breading, they can sometimes be chewy. The banh mi sandwich you have to specify that you want vegan, and they'll switch out the meat for seitan. The sandwich is also a flavorful and fresh tasting choice, but last time I had it, it was a little on the salty side. Breakfast tacos with seitan were yummy, mainly because of the pico de gallo and because I put vegan ranch on them. All fried potatoes I've had are delicious and their vegan ranch is one of my favorite things ever. Benson Brewery usually always has friendly and accommodating service staff, keeps a clean and relaxed environment, and seems to use quality ingredients and take care in creating their dishes. It stays on my list as a go-to place for vegan options. read more

Food was great ! Everything served the right temperature HOT and cold - potato salad. Just ordered way too much! I had a pineapple cider from a guest brewery. It was awesome! Others had the Cuban and blue cheese burger. Also had the wedge salad. I would order that again. Good service. The only thing that would have made it better was less flies and gnats (seriously at least 3 flies - so annoying and gnats flying around) and it was SO LOUD in the place. this place is one of my new fav patios! stopped in on a whim for drinks and apps. i tried the B Passionate sour and it was so crsip with the perfect amount of sweetness. i'm not the most well-versed in craft beer, but would love to try their other brews next time! they also have a list of cocktails that all sounded delicious if you're not a big beer drinker. split some pretzel sticks as well and their gouda cheese sauce is a must! holy heck it was delicious! the prices were very affordable and our server was extremely friendly. read more

So disappointed! I had not been to this Brewery for a couple years and thought I would give a different spot in Benson a try. I don't know where to start; the minute you walk in the door the staff seemed bothered, then you smell a horrible odor of dirty old rag that they must wipe everywhere, then my well done burger was rare with no flavor. To top it off my margarita had a odd taste so not even the drinks were made right. Definitely not worth the $48.00 for one drink, burger with fries and Mac n cheese. read more

Most recently I shared a Reuben and Bacon blue burger with my grandpa, both were outstanding. I really enjoyed that burger though, cooked medium rare just right. The bun was sweet and soft but held up well to the juices. The french fries...they give you way too many and I ate them all. It was so good I didn't regret the uncomfortably full tummy. Had really high hopes due to the fact where we are from in California has amazing breweries. Unfortunately this experience killed it for us. Started off fine. We know breweries are generally loud with the hustle and bustle, completely fine. What didnt allow anyone to get a word in edgewise was the cook constantly yelling every time he put a dish up for a food runner. Definitely need a better system for that we it's a little obnoxious. We ordered Mac and cheese which came 25 minutes prior to our burgers which is I guess fine. Burgers came out sub par. Super dry and we couldn't tell if the fries were supposed to be burnt or if that was a mistake. We then never had our server come to check on us to see how the food is. My husband wanted to order another beer and was told by someone we would have to wait for the server. She walked by us only 1000 times never acknowledged us. Finally I flag her down after 46 minutes of waiting to pay and leave, ask her for the check and she then asks us who is our server, I looked blankly and said "you". It's one thing to forget an order or a drink but wow! To forget a table entirely. I have been a server for 5 years and never once have I done that and if I see a table looking aimlessly around I check on them regardless if they are mine or not. Will not be returning read more

I went here with a group of friends and was blown away by the service. The waitress was super sweet, honest, and helpful. One of my friends is a new mom and was sad she couldn't drink with us and the waitress took the time to make a virgin version of a drink which made her day! The food and drinks were also really good! The burger was juicy, the salad was fresh, and the fries were tasty. Two of my friends ordered the vegetarian gyro and that was also really good. The drinks themselves were well thought of. My friend ordered a flight and they were labeled to note each type of beer which was cool. She said they tasted good too. The Fried Port Tenderloin "burger" is amazing. I have no idea what harissa aioli is but let me tell you - it is delicious. I've always been a fan of Havarti cheese and this burger doesn't disappoint. Ps - I'm told by my awesome server that Harissa is a hot chili pepper paste. They then mix it with mayo to make it milder (i.e., defuse it). The pork is topped with caramelized onions. I'm not usually a fan of onions but my goodness, besides the pickles they were just what the pork needed. Did I mention that they brew their own beer here. It's all done on site in the back. They have a range of styles to fit a wide variety of palettes. That being said, while I'm a big fan of dark beers, I didn't try their stout. I did however try the Debut IPA and the Karah-T. The IPA wasn't too hoppy and didn't have an overly alcohol taste that I think characterizes most strong IPAs. The Karah-T is a spiced ale. The spices were nice since it's been a very cold day for this Texan. Oh, they've been here since 2013 so they're not new to the world of craft food and beer. As we live just up the street, this used to be one of our favorite go-to spots when we felt like going out to eat. The experience we had yesterday is making me think we are about done with Benson Brewery. I had family visiting from out of town and wanted to take them somewhere unique to the area, so I figured this would be a great spot. We walked in and saw the 'please seat yourself' sign. Usually no big deal except all empty tables were full of dirty dishes or being used as a service station. The bartender finally came out from behind the bar to clear a table since nobody else was around. Once we finally were seated, someone brought out menus and said the server would be there shortly. Waited about ten minutes for the server to come over. When he finally did, all he said was that the kitchen was behind and we should probably go somewhere else. Seriously?!! You're a bar! How about maybe taking a drink order or something instead of basically telling people just to get out because the kitchen is running behind. I'm hoping management sees this and does something, because we really loved this place and would like to come back if things get back to how they used to be! read more

First of all, the beer and atmosphere at the brewery is amazing. I had the Belgian Wit and my friend had the Blonde Bunny and both were delicious. The outdoor seating was great. There are a lot of plants and the decor is nice. I feel like I am a reasonable person when it comes to customer service and this service was awful. Someone sat us quickly and brought us menus but it took over twenty minutes to come get our order. We actually set a time on our phone when it had been twenty minutes. We have them 8 more minutes to come get our order before we left. They came after 5 min so 25 min total. It took another twenty plus minutes for them to bring us our beer. My friend and I were actually joking and saying "did they even brew the beer yet?" When our beers arrived I immediately gave the waiter cash to pay for them because I did not want to wait again. While they were not quick with our change, at least we had beers at that point. We did a survey of the place and we were one of four parties total at the brewery. I understand COVID is a struggle so I thought we were being more than patient but it became too much. read more

Enjoyable family experience today at Benson Brewery. The cozy gastro pub had the front door rolled up helping us make the most of an unseasonably warm day! We really liked the kale salad and baked Mac & cheese both with chicken. Salad was very fresh - house peppercorn dressing added some zip and fruit/nuts brought some sweet and crunch - refreshing flavor and large portion. Mac and cheese was a nice comfort food dish. Added a Brewer's Duet (Stout beer brewed with cold brew coffee) ...Would definately order again. Table service was excellent. Price tag w/tax was $42. Also, it appears that a well established beard is a prerequisite to work here - for the dudes anyway. Four stars for solid food and beer at a premium. Glad to pay for quality experience!
