Dang. My favorite whiskey connoisseur, buyer and sales person isn't here any more and I'm really sad. I'm addition to being sad, the store just isn't the same from a product or customer service standpoint. I used to love coming in to talk to Nate. He always knew the new news on new whiskey, knew what was coming in and when, and he was so great at taking care of his customers. He really kept the shelves stocked with interesting things and turned me on to so many bottles I never would have picked up, and he was always good about making sure folks got a chance at the stuff of their dreams. The last year was tough for me and I didn't get in but once to see him. I felt bad because I truly enjoyed my visits with Nate and missed them, so once it felt more comfortable I stopped in and that's when I learned he wasn't there anymore. The shelves are less interesting. The prices in the case have climbed. And the vibe is totally devoid of his energy. It's still a great local business to support. But for me, it's missing something that made it special. read more

My neighborhood liquor store. And for Reno they are a small local chain. It's still amazing the variety of beer and wine they stick. And the staff is always available to help with any questions about their inventory. There's also a large liquor selection, as well as an aisle of mixers. You need to stop in once in a while for their sales, which I don't think are ever advertised. Also posted in the store are monthly wine tastings that are usually on Friday afternoons. On occasion they host wine tastings for charity events here. Nice store and just convenient. read more

I wouldn't know what they have to offer because I didn't get in the store enough to check it out. I was totally turned off by the rude employee (shoulder length hair- tie dye mask), apparently I parked in-front of the store that is not a dedicated parking spot &'she was incredibly rude!!!! I didn't know because I've never been there, sucks the owners lost my business tonight but I'd rather shop where I feel welcomed. Strange employees. Came in at 9:30 (much too late for my comfort I know) on 06/09 both the employees, a middle aged man and a stocky woman, stared me down as if I were a thief or something, and as I'm grabbing a few things, the middle aged employee screams "knock it the fuck off" as loud as he possibly could at the kids enjoying themselves at the family pizza parlor next door. Not my business as to why he has such beef with kids, but maybe you should relocate him if that's such an issue. Not a very welcoming experience when employees are screaming profanities at kids. Decent selection of goods is the second star. read more

This is a cool store. I have been here many times in my multiple visits to the "Biggest Little City in The World." They have - Excellent Selection, Great Prices, Helpful staff, and I have never been there when they were too busy to assist. In previous visits we have stopped in for the excellent and informative wine tastings. This trip I just ran in a couple of times, grabbed a couple of things and was on my way. I, again found everything the same consistency as always. There was ONE thing that is not BAD, but I was a little unhappy with. I was disappointed in the cigar selection. Most of the wine shops I visit have at least a reasonable selection. They have two different types of cigars and they are not in a humidor, they are hanging on a pegboard hanger at the register. This is my favorite Ben's location. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and ready to help you find what you need. The selection is great, especially for beer. Several times we've bought them out of certain beers that they've carried, as no one else in Reno had what we were looking for. Their prices are fairly average until you hit their sales - that's when you really see a break because they've got GREAT sale prices. They'll order anything you might be interested in that they're not currently carrying, and they'll make sure it's available at any location from which it's easiest for you to pick up your order. Looking for a wine store that has a greater selection than Whole Foods at cheaper prices? Drive right on past Ben's then. The prices are equivalent or higher! And, at least Whole Paycheck has a decent selection of local and local-ish wines. In fact, I do believe I saw one bottle at $11.49 here not long after I spied it at $7-8 at trader joe's. Looking for friendly staff to assist you in your selection? Nah...not at Ben's! These smoker's-cough-riddled employees are too busy talking amongst themselves to be bothered with you.... Very disappointing, particularly in light of the good reviews for the downtown location. Maybe that one is vastly better...but I doubt it!! So, I continue my search for a WF/TJ's alternative.... read more

Of the three Ben's locations, this one carries the variety and sizes of the special treats I seek out once in a blue moon. 375 ml domain de canton (french ginger liqueur) - let it linger, and you'll feel the bite on your lips. The only thing that strikes me wrong about this location is the strange odor in the store.. It makes me wonder if it was flooded at one time in the past. read more

I love Ben's. It's my go-to place in Reno to get spirits and beer when I'm in the mood. Definitely helps that it's about a block from my house so it's 100% convenient. The selection of spirits they have there is excellent. If you're looking for it, chances are it's there. Beer selection is good, I can always find something I'm interested in taking home with me, but it's not the best selection in town (I'd have to give that to Total Wine). I do like that they stock several East-Coast beers for when I'm looking for a fix. The wine selection they have is good, but I've noticed it's a bit higher priced so I tend to avoid those and stick with booze or beer. They do have wine tastings on Fridays that are free if you spend $25 (I think, don't quote me), and they're generally a lot of fun with really interesting, knowledgeable folk. They have an okay selection of cold wines and drinks (other than beer), about equivalent to what you might find in a grocery store, so don't rely on whatever you're looking for being cold (or if it must be cold, don't rely on it being exactly what you're looking for), but I think this is a forgivable sin. The staff are always cordial, though generally just a teeny bit surly. Always willing to answer any questions you might have and lead you towards something delicious if you ask. read more

This review isn't about the store...selection or prices. Those are fine, why I've shopped here often. This review is about the incompetent, clueless, rude staff I encountered today. (Unfortunately not the first time) I accidentally left my wallet there. Having stopped several places today, I had to backtrack quite a few after noticing it missing. Obviously a bit panicked. I finally called Bens and the clerk said, 'oh yeah, I think we might have it'. Needless to say, I went right over. They had it. I asked why I wasn't called (since it had been there for a few hours) and the guy responded, "how would we know how to call you"? Mind you I have business cards and other ID with my phone number EASILY found in it. His response was, "well it's not our responsibility, you left it here". Yes true, but wth?? I said I think it would just be common courtesy to try and track down the owner, don't you? That's what MOST people would do. Esp for something like a wallet. He then proceeds to tell me it's not their problem I left it. I should keep a better eye on. Shouting "you're welcome, you're welcome" as I was leaving...(umm, for what?) then he tells me to F off. Are you kidding me?? This wasn't even a 'kid'. Obviously just NO common sense or customer service skills whatsoever. Pathetic. Is this the best you can do Ben's? read more

Ben's Fine Wine and Liquor in Reno right here at the corner of Lakeside and Moana is a decent place to come get your booze on party night and you wanted to play, they have competitive prices with other liquor stores in town but if you're really trying to save some money you probably want to go to the supermarket. If you're looking for upper-class top shelf wine then Ben's fine wine is a perfect place to find it they have decent service that's the four stars yeah sometimes you get a wave of the hand or you get a hi or how's it going but that's about it nothing too exciting over it Ben's Fine Wine and Liquor. I would say that I like they have Rosay and Zinfandel those are two of my favorites and I just love it they have both of them. Getting in and out can be a little tricky because of how it's located on the corner of Lakeside and Moana so you may want to approach it from the Moana access point. read more

Saturday night rolled around and I just couldn't find my old flask at my house. So I went on by Ben's to pick up one real fast. I must say they seemed to have a large selection of booze and beers. The staff is even fairly knowledgeable on the inventory. They had like 20 flasks to choose from which was sweet. Sometimes options can be tough to choose from, but every once in awhile it's great to see a selection. I shop there at least once a week to pick up a rack of beers. read more

Every Bens I go to has a large selection of beer, wine, and spirits. This one is no different. No matter what your poison is they mostly carry it in one form or another. Personally I'm a big beer guy so mostly I buy Samuel Adams Boston Lager 12 Packs here. A few times I've shopped around town looking for the best deal and they're prices beat most of the supermarkets in town. The staff at this location is fairly friendly but I wouldn't say they're as knowledgeable about the inventory as the staff working the Keystone location. Usually on my way out I eyeball the high end bottles of Patron in the glass case. One day I'd like to see if the juice is worth the squeeze. P.S. I know Andy B. will agree with me when I say they have a vast selection of flasks to choose from. read more

Reliable staff who know who you are. Great wine tastings every Friday. Awesome liquor selection and good prices. The "Drew recommends" wines are never a disappointment. LOCAL business. I was there the day an unmentioned bigger wine store came in and unprofessionally threatened to steal enough business's to shut the place down. Glad this hasn't happened and that regulars know what a gem this place is. Every time my Bay Area friends come to town they want to head to Ben's to stock up for the stay and for their coffers at home. Also I always cruise past here after shopping at TJs (who is lower prices but not very good wine) or WF (as Ben's selection and prices are way better). Awesome shop, thanks Ben's!!!!!! This place has the best beer selection. Ben himself is very nice and I love the variety that they offer in beer, wine and liquor. The prices are fair and this place is right around the corner from my house. Can't get any better than that! read more

I had the WORST customer service experience at this location this evening that I have ever experienced in my life! My boyfriend and I went to this location to purchase a high-end bottle of scotch. We wanted to spend about $100. Unfortunately, the employee, "Gary" was disgusting and repeatedly belched and it resonated through the empty store. When my boyfriend addressed him, stating that it was rude, he proclaimed that "it was a normal bodily function" and that my boyfriend was being a "DICK". Then his co-worker chimed in and said that it was only "rude" if he had done it "in our face". I was stunned. I chose to leave. When my boyfriend requested the name of the owner, so that we could complain, we were told, that the owner wasn't at this location. Then, "Gary" proclaimed that we weren't that upset that we didn't want to get his name, when all we wanted to do was leave because we had never been so furious and didn't want the situation to escalate. I decided to grab a pen from my purse and request his name. He then approached me, while sticking his name tag in my face. I requested the name of the other employee, that had disappeared to the back room, and he would not give it to me. I told home that it was fine, they were clocked in and it would be easy to track. He then proceeded to challenge my customer service skills and begin to argue with me. At this point, I chose to leave, but will return tomorrow to speak with someone higher up on the food chain. This situation was so appalling to us, that it took over an hour to control our anger over the situation. Ben's needs to seriously reconsider the people they choose to represent their company. We would be hard pressed to ever find a reason to visit this store in the future. We did drive, "out of our way" to Total Wine, where a fantastic employee named, "Mathew" postponed his lunch to do an impromptu scotch-tasting with us and ended up earning a $200 scotch sale from us. He is impeccable at his job and Ben's should take pause and realize their staff didn't even say,"Hello" before they abused their customers. I can't recall a time that I have ever had such a horrible and horrific experience as I did this evening at Ben's Liquor.
