Pre-packaged food was a major surprise. I came for the coconut cake and saw a cake that was on display and looked like it was cut on the spot for orders. So when I placed a takeout order they brought me a pre frozen cake slice from the back and when I told her I wanted the fresh one the lady at the register insisted it was fresh. I know it was not fresh. Later when I bit into it also did not taste freshly made. The one on display that was cut for dine in looked better. I hate leaving bad reviews! I felt like management should be aware though that the morning staff on July 26th around 11am were really struggling! There were two servers working and that's all, there was a group ahead of us that were having a hard time with them about not receiving their food and while this was happening other customers were getting ignored because they both were cleaning or standing around. After everyone had left we were waiting for our pastries and iced tea and they still stood around not prepping anything. When asked about the wait for the tea there was some attitude! Benne's came up as a "brunch" place; would not recommend for brunch necessarily. All of the food is made ahead of time and they heat it up in the microwave for you. If they run out of food, they do not have any way to make more, so unfortunately at 9am they were out of 70% of their breakfast menu. 2 lattes, 1 danish, 1 parfait and a breakfast sandwich ran us about $50. It is a small Cafe and Bakery by Peninsula Grill that serves breakfast sandwiches plus coffee/drinks and sweet treats including the famous Ultimate Coconut Cake by Peninsula Grill. There are several desserts that you can order by the slice or the entire cake. You can enjoy them in the restaurant or take them to go. The coconut cake here is the real deal. It's expensive ($15 for a slice) but a big slice and really delicious. We stopped in for a quick treat with some coffees and tea and it was worth it. Part of Peninsula Grill at the Planters Inn, Benne's is a pretty cafe with a menu focused on pastries, sandwiches, and coffees. If I were in the area and looking for a quick snack, I would stop by but I am not aching to return. The chai latte was inedible, the latte was made with almond milk (which I didn't request), the chocolate croissant was fine, and the salmon bagel was kind of strange (they used a sweet cream cheese, which I wasn't expecting). I came in with my girlfriend after a walk and went to sit at bar but we were shockingly reprimanded that she would not serve us alcohol and if we wanted food we needed to go to cashier to order ! We were staying at the their hotel , Planters Inn a very beautiful and charming hotel which doesn't match with who they have hired to work in their cafe . Food is definitely not like it was described on the website. Setup as a grab and go, parfait was nothing like the website. Cannoli was dry and tasted old, only ate half of it. Bec sandwich was a grab and go style and had to be sent back because it was still cold. Coffee , vanilla latte, was basically half foam so you are buying an already overpriced coffee and only getting half a cup, taste mediocre at best. It's pretty good with potential but the setup is odd. We sat down and ordered a cocktail, a beer, and the coconut cake. The cocktail was delivered with the wrong beer. The waiter was nice to change it out with no issue. However our piece of cake sat on the counter for nearly 10 minutes. Our waiter was making drinks and waiting all 4 tables in the restaurant while another waiter stood behind the counter staring out the windows and the two girls at front registers scrolled through their phones.
