Served us the wrong dish (beef instead of pork), ignored our religious dietary restrictions, and never apologized.I had a very upsetting experience at Ben Thanh that I feel I need to share. I ordered the pork spring rolls, which I've had before. This time, the taste and texture were very off -- when I opened the roll, I realized they had given us beef with avocado instead. This was extremely distressing as we don't eat beef due to religious and cultural reasons. We immediately asked to speak to the manager, but instead they sent a staff member who didn't understand us and said things like "Is it good?" and "What do you want me to do?", without offering a single apology. After insisting, the manager eventually came over but continued to show zero accountability. Instead of apologizing, she kept asking, "So what will make you happy?" and tried to offer a replacement spring roll -- as if that solved the issue after we had already eaten part of a dish we never would have touched knowingly. To make it worse, she later said they had given us a discount "for both dishes" -- meaning she still expected us to pay for the one they got completely wrong, just with a small discount. I told her clearly that I would not pay for a dish I didn't order. We ended up paying for the other dish, but couldn't even finish it because it was contaminated by the spring roll. And the worst part? Not one person ever said "sorry." As a university student, I didn't go there looking for free food. I just expected to be treated with respect. But the way they handled their mistake -- with coldness, blame-shifting, and complete lack of empathy -- was honestly shocking. If you have any dietary restrictions or simply expect basic customer service, I strongly recommend thinking twice before eating here. read more

I tried the pho, fresh rolls, and spring rolls. All were excellent. Having tried a lot of pho places in Toronto, I actually preferred the pho here. Soup was nicely flavoured and the toppings were very fresh. The fresh rolls were nicely done - the peanut spicy sauce was flavourful. The crispy spring rolls were crunchy on the outside and kind of fluffy on the inside. For some reason I wasn't a huge fan of the tea. All in all, the place seemed clean and the service was friendly. I got the farmhouse chicken and rice noodle soup, the chicken looked so delicious and fresh in the picture and what I got was so disappointing I actually said something. I am not one to normally complain about food but I would have gotten something else if I had known what I was going to receive. I did eat two pieces that had chicken on it but I felt it was over steamed and come on there's no way other people would have thought it was worth $16 for a giant bowl of pho soup with it too. It could have gone into soup vs a side of "farm chicken" The papaya salad was really tasty and my mom liked her dish. I stopped in to get take out because my team and I were working it late. I ordered the Benthanh special pho an the beef pho. I also ordered some shrimp roles and calamari wasabi. When you order the noodles and the ingredients are separated from the soup base. The soup base was very favourable but it leaves you with MSG taste in your mouth. The shrimp rolls were appealing but the shrimps are cut in half-essentially to cost cut on the rolls. The fry on the calamari was not good. By the time it was recieved in the take out order it was soggy and served with a wasabi mayo side. Not the wasabi calamari I expected. It didnt look like the pictures. In our total order there were three large take out bowls but only two were filled and they made a mistake on our order missing something. This was Our go to place for Thai food and compared all other Thai food to Ben Thanh. I called on Saturday at 4:30 pm and ordered a dinner set with sweet and sour pork, chicken with cashews, a mango salad, sticky rice, and spring rolls. We also ordered the other rolls, I don't recall the name because we always order by number 501. I was told my order would be delivered in 40 min. We live about 7 min from the restaurant so we are not far. Two hours and several calls later (they stopped answering the phone) our meal finally arrived. The salad was hot and the rice was cold and not sticky. The rolls were soggy and floppy. The rest of the food was luke warm. The quality of the food has gone down since the restaurant opened many years ago. It was the best but not anymore. For the privilege of this mediocre food and awe full service I paid $50. Great restaurant for lunch and dinner. They have an ample selection of dishes. Beef, chicken, seafood, vegetarian, drinks and dessert. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We ordered soup, rice and a green curry seafood medley which was amazing. They have lots of room for small or large groups. Checked in here last night and enjoyed a great tasting meal alongside my work colleague. Together we both ordered two types of Pad Thai, Vietnamese Spring Rolls, Thai Spring Rolls and a small bowl of coconut soup that was huge. Nice atmosphere and layout of the restaurant. Prompt friendly service. Great food. The overall Yelp rating was a very poor reflection of my personal experience. Contrary, the Google restaurant rating was very high. The food was great and enjoyable. The one star comes from the staff, they will give you your food and take your order like normal. After any requests you have will be ignored. There is one server in that restaurant that will help out. Over all the experience was meh. when it came to paying, when the server checked the Receipt you can tell she was frustrated because we didn't leave a big tip. She then fixed the machine to put in 15% of the bill as the tip when we had no saying and wanted to leave. I have been a customer for a long time and am very disappointed with the quality the last couple times we've eaten there. This present takeout meal had the following issues, the spring roll included in the platter and had less meat than the bowls ordered but was $3 more the seafood Pad Thai had 2 shrimp and the meat in my bowl was, no joke 90% fat. When we phoned them to tell them of the issues with the order they did not seem interested in resolving our complaints. Needless to say we will not be going back anytime soon. read more

The very first time we came here at sometime last year, it wasn't a memorable experience. The rare beef on a bowl of pho tasted chewy and hard. The tap water tasted bad. Since then, we still visit this place for a quick Vietnamese or Thai meal due to the lack of alternatives, and things have been getting better. The appetizers such as spring rolls, shrimp rolls, Taiwanese chicken wings, cyclone shrimp rolls, and Tom Yum soup have been decent. The cyclone shrimp rolls were a bit too burnt though and I wouldn't order them again. The pho has improved most significantly with better rare beef and better tasting broth. I don't think they used to do dim sum and bubble tea but they have been added to the menu as well. I've also tried their green curry and red curry and these dishes taste similar to ones from other Asian restaurants such as Springrolls. The service tends to be quick and efficient. Really great food with tons of flavour and large portions! The menu has a lot to offer and there are many substitute vegetarian dishes at the back. This is one of my favourite restaurants as there is an endless number of different dishes to try and the food here is extremely tasty. Prices are decent and staff are friendly, I love coming here for dinner. The place is always busy on the weekends because the food is so good so don't be surprised if you get put on the wait list. I recommend making a reservation, just to be safe. The interior is very neat and modern, although on busy nights (Fri. and Sat.) it gets noisy, which is pretty normal though, for a casual dining place. This is my favourite restaurant in Cambridge. My family used to go to the tiny little start-up in Kitchener, but once this one opened, we started going here. We're huge fans of the seafood pad thai, though sometimes it's overly spicy and there's no way to really tell until it comes out. I love that it comes with shrimp, calamari and fish slices. Adding chunks of fresh fish or scallops would make it perfect! Other great hidden gems are the Pepper Pork Pot with Tofu (421), the vegetarian rolls (601) and the Cha Cha Cocktail. I also love the Chili Salt Calamari and the Mango Salad (with beef, chicken or shrimp). The only thing they need to work on is timing the food. We often get drinks at the end of the meal, rice halfway through the meal, main dishes coming out at separate times, etc., which just makes the dining experience feel like you're flying by the seat of your pants. It's hard to enjoy when your food is cold because you were being polite by waiting for your guests' food to arrive before digging in. read more

Not impressed, I've been a frequent customer to this establishment and so it is difficult for me to give this place a bad review. That said, the vermicelli platter I ordered had less meat than the bowls (that were $3 less) my company ordered. When I confronted the management her response was that they decided to give the customer more vegetables with the platter than in the bowl. I paid more money for more lettuce. The pork in my girlfriends vermicelli bowl was, without exaggeration, 90 percent fat content. I am sad to say I will not be returning to Ben Thanh. read more

My wife had ordered Won Ton Soup. We also ordered some Thai spring rolls, which were good. The fried Calamari was so tough it could have sparred a few rounds with Muhammed Ali. It was also served cold, and we promptly sent it back. My soup order (not Won Ton) came first. Then we waited, and waited. Finally I went to the manager to inquire about the missing Won Ton Soup. I got take out from here last night and I really like them, so I'm not here to give a bad review, as I already gave a good one But!... I will personally Never order the pad Thai from here, as it didn't have Any bean sprouts or peanuts and the sauce is not good at all (Tasted like Ketchup).. I got the Taro bubble tea, with passion fruit Jelly and it was alright, it could of been a bit sweeter, as t was more on the bland side and more watered down and slushy (I prefer it more sweet and more milky/creamy). I ordered off of the dim sum menu and it was GOOD.. The steamed spare ribs in black bean sauce is Delicious and I would order it again and again and again (Very fatty though).. I got the shrimp and pork dim sum dumpling as well and it wasn't bad. The mango cold rolls are good, I also didn't care the peanut sauce here (I've had better). The chili and salt fish is Good, I would order this again.. the calamari is good as well but I preferred the fish more. I got the Tamarind chicken wings and they were Terrible (you may have a taste for it but I didn't and this is coming from someone that LOVES Tamarind). The Thai spring rolls were better the first time I tried them but they were still pretty good here, I just remember the first experience being better. Not bad but there are better. We're from Vietnam and frequent many places that offer traditional Viet fare. The Ben Thanh chain has varying quality and tastes dependant on the location and dare I say population that frequent the restaurant. The pho is bland and leans too much on the heavy spices like cloves and star anise. Fried rice is not really fried as much as steamed. Indicating they use fresh rice out of the pot without cooling first. Their Thai oriented selection is of greater quality and fairly standardized between the individual restaurants. In Cambridge it could be better. The pros are that they try to focus on service although on some occasions we've had our orders go to the wrong table or just missing completely. This is not the norm though and seems to happen when it gets busy. The portion sizes are large and presumably for sharing. Depending on how you order they will surmise whether you are eating communally or individually. They will bring extra bowls and utensils to accommodate communal dining. Often without being asked, depending on your server. All that is great and all but for those who want great tasting Viet/Thai food, look elsewhere. And that's the deal breaker for me. read more
