My rating is 4.5. I'm rounding up. For roughly a year, I have flagged visiting Hakka Hut. It's in the same plaza as Fast Eddie's, which is just off the Hespeler exit when you're on highway 401. I didn't think of dropping by Hakka Hut for lunch because I always wanted a burger from Fast Eddie's. Well, I put my burger pangs aside last Saturday and opted to get lunch at Hakka Hut through Uber Eats. I was at the Cambridge ONroute stop and placed my order there. I then casually drove over to fetch my food. I looked at what others had ordered at Hakka Hut in the past on Yelp. My go-to dish when I am first giving a Hakka place a try is chilli chicken. My favourite dish is actually spicy garlic chicken and each restaurant has variations on it. One Yelper said that the latter dish has a lot of garlic. Sold! It's located in a small plaza. I have never had any problems finding a parking spot. I backed into a spot and headed inside. The restaurant is cute. I spoke to a nice woman who had my order ready. She mentioned that indoor dining would be available in two days. I was early. Ugh! I thanked her for my goodies and walked over to my car to chow down. I liked that the condiments and plastic cutlery were in a small paper bag with pandas on it. It was a nice touch. My spicy garlic chicken was in a plastic container. It was super full. This place does not skimp on ingredients. I had to be careful not to tip the container. I also got steamed rice, which I gently added to the spicy garlic chicken. The spicy garlic chicken here is fantastic. It's spicy. It's garlicky. It's chicken-y. Yes, I know the last one isn't a word, but I needed to be consistent! You get a lot of chopped garlic in it. It's just the way that I like it. If my breath doesn't have a garlic aftertaste afterwards, it's not garlicky enough! This dish fulfilled this criterion. This dish also has green onions, which I dig. I don't enjoy this dish when folks put bell peppers in it. I like this version. Simple and yummy! The only aspect that needs improvement is the sauce. It was more on the watery side. I don't know if it was packed up for a while such that there was more condensation that expected, but it would have been perfect if the sauce were thicker. Otherwise, the spicy garlic chicken had tons of flavour. I will make a special shout out to the light batter around each chicken morsel. This place uses white meat and the batter is whisper-thin such that you don't feel like you need a nap afterwards from a carb overload. Excellent! I'm a fan. It's such a gem in Cambridge. I ordered takeout from here. The worker here told me the Manchurian chicken and chili chicken is very popular but spicy. I ordered the garlic chicken and the hakka special Singapore noodles. I was impressed with the quantity of food I received and the fact that the chicken came with steamed rice. Definitely good value as the two dishes could feed two people for under 30$. The garlic spicy chicken was so tender, seasoned and garlicky. Too bad the restaurant can't be open for dine in as it had a nice cozy atmosphere. read more

Very disappointed. I've ordered from this place before but won't do so ever again. It got off to a bad start with the service. I ordered via UberEats and selected the items I wanted as presented. I get a call almost 45 minutes later saying that one of the items was incorrect on the menu. Specifically there was 1. Eggplant and Okra or 2. Cauliflower and Okra. The restaurant said it was only Eggplant or Okra or Cauliflower...When I explained that this wasn't what the menu showed, he left to check and spoke with the owner. Subsequently they insisted it was one or the other. I asked for a reduction in price if I wasn't getting what I asked for and what they presented on the menu, which they of course chose to decline. They tried to blame it on UberEats, which is not fair. 1. The menu item is clear and unambiguous. If this was an error, it was due to the restaurant providing incorrect info. 2. The restaurant has a responsibility for verifying their menu is correct. 3. A reasonable restaurant would have accepted the mistake, made the meal as ordered and then fixed the problem rather than transferring it to the customer or blaming their delivery service. Anyway, given we were now over an hour since ordering I chose to go with one of the items. Food arrived quickly after that, but what we got was unpalatable. The deep fried spring rolls and cauliflower bites were "ok", but the paneer butter masala was disgusting. It was virtually soup, with a few chunks of paneer and the sauce tasted suspiciously like canned Campbells Tomato soup, but with a bunch of sugar added. It was so sweet that we didn't finish either order and threw the rest in the garbage. Also, the "Eggplant Okra" as expected, didn't include *any* Okra. So, overall crappy service, crappy food. Never ordering there again. Next time I'll order from one of the other hakka restaurants in the region. read more

I would have been disappointed had it been half the price we paid. All dishes were 75%+ just sauce, as if that were an excuse to give us as little as possible while still claiming they "filled" each container. Chicken balls where the size of actual chicken testicles, swimming like little islands in an ocean of sweet and sour. The actual food part (the small % that wasn't just sauce) was also extremely underwhelming. They cut so many corners i didn't even know existed, and cheaped out on anything you can possibly imagine (plus some you cant). 1 star is too much but I don't know how to give less. I can't imagine they have any repeat business. Its either a money laundering front by people who can't cook and don't care, or its litterally just a scam. read more

Tucked away in a corner, Hakka Hut is truly a gem. I ate lunch here in a group of 4. The medium Manchurian soup that I order was flavourful and not too cornstarchy like most soups. The medium size comfortably feeds 4. I also had the Thai mango salad, chicken lollipops and the Hakka fried noodles. The salad was amazing, with the sour and sweet flavours complementing each other beautifully. The chicken was perfectly cooked, aromatic and was not too greasy. The fried noodles were also quite decent. Again, I was pleasantly surprised at how great they tasted without being too greasy. I moved from Mississauga in a Hakka dense area. In fact, finding traditional North American Chinese food was difficult. After living in Stratford for a few years I was craving Manchurian Chow mien and had to go to KW for some reason and I came across this place online. The menu is extensive, and I ordered at the counter. This was a good few weeks into the Pandemic and there were only two staff members, so it took a few minutes, but the food was freshly cooked when ordered so it may take some time anyway. Went there this afternoon and tried their chicken chopsuey with sweet and sour sauce, Hakka noodles and chilli chicken. The noodles and chicken were fine but the chopsuey was blood red in colour with no salt and extremely sweet. When we conveyed the same, the chef said that sweet and sour salute has no salt and is supposed to be red in colour. I am a chef myself and this is far from the truth. Service was fine but could have been better. Please do not try anything other than the standard chilli chicken and Hakka noodles here; not worth the risk. read more

We visited the place last weekend and ordered hot & sour soup which was ok for my taste. Crispy paneer was flavorful but extremely spicy although we didn't ask for that spicy food. I really wish it was less spicy so that weekend could enjoy it more. In main entree, we ordered Veg manchurian with gravy & chicken hakka noodles. Manchurian was mild spicy and super delicious. Although this is in Canada, this is a must try for ppl who like spicy authentic Asian/Indian food! The food here was surprisingly good and very affordable. I ordered the lunch special which came with a soup, appetizer, and a main dish. I got Hakka noodles. Not too spicy and came in large portions - enough leftover for my lunch the next day. The only down side is the small size of the restaurant and the limited staff. It seemed like there were perhaps 3 employees - 2 cooking in the kitchen and 1 acting as host host and waiter. As a result, service was on the slower side. Follow up to my last review. Probably best to stick with eating in here. Today I ordered a lunch special for pickup. It came with a couple of nice crispy vegetable egg rolls, a bowl of soup, and hakka chow mein with shrimp. No complaints about the flavor of the food. But. You get probably twice as much if you eat in, and when I got back to work I found myself with a bowl of soup with no spoon, and a box of noodles with no fork. I heard good things from locals about this place. I am a huge fan of Hakka food and was excited to try it out. We made reservations in advance for the large group we had. The place is quite small and service was slow. Although there were 3/4 servers, it felt they could not handle the business. Getting just water, plates and utensils took multiple attempts of " excuse me" to the servers. The food also took forever to come out. We tried the lollipop chicken, chicken pakoras, Manchurian noodles and Manchurian chicken. If you are debating between chicken pakoras or the lollipop chicken, I would recommend the chicken pakoras. The Manchurian noodles are super flavourful which I enjoyed. The Manchurian chicken was also good as we opted for gravy with it which was nice to have with rice. Overall, the food was quite greasy but nice cheat day. However, service was super super slow which took away from the experience. Wonton soup tasty and delicious, fav was by far the chicken lollipops, looks dry but surprising moist and tender, spice was perfect, falls apart in your mouth. So I got take out from this place, I called and ordered over the phone and the lady was very nice and patient. She did mention she was closing soon, but was more then willing to take my order, which made me happy, because I was craving Hakka Chinese. Here is what I ordered... : Manchurian House Noodles - Very Very Very good (I'd come here for this alone). I didn't care for thr shrimp in it and I Love shrimp.. next time, I'll just get the Chicken one. Chicken Wings - They were really good, I enjoyed them and would get them again as well but I don't usually order chicken wings, when I get Hakka food, so next time I'll try a different dish perhaps but if you want chicken wings, they make them good here. The lady asked me what type of sauce I'd like with them and mentioned a few sauces and I asked for the honey garlic (on the side) the honey garlic tastes totally different, compared to the taste your use to, but it wasn't bad, I kinda enjoyed it in a weird way, I cannot explain the taste but honestly it came in a TINY little package!? Why are you guys putting sauces for the wings in Tiny Tiny packages? It's barely any sauce! First time in Waterloo/Kitchener area. Walked down the block to find Hakka Hut hiding around the corner. The combo was recommended so I ordered the Pad Thai as my main menu. This came with a tasty hot and sour soup that came quick and hot, good start. The Pad Thai followed right after I finished my soup. Noodles were perfectly cooked, hot, and dripping with sauce. The two chicken pieces were only average (average is not a disappointment) but only compared the soup and noodles. It's great to find a gem when you least expect it. read more
