I got number 410, an eggplant and potato dish and my husband got a Cantonese chow mein. The food was pretty good. I really enjoyed my eggplant dish. It's simple and healthy. I don't mind somewhat mushy texture of eggplants. I sampled a little bit of the Cantonese chow mein and it was good with crispy noodles and stir-fried shrimp, chicken, beef, bok choy and other ingredients. I've had better Cantonese chow mein elsewhere, though. I took off one star because the water didn't taste right. They have cartons of water with lemon slices in them prepared and rather than tasting fresh, the water tasted off. The tables and chairs could be cleaned and maintained better. I avoided Mr. Gao like the plague after I read the reviews on Yelp. However, I kept seeing great pictures of this place on Instagram & the food looked phenomenal so I gave it a shot. The parking in the back is VERY tight but we were lucky enough to find a spot. The restaurant was relatively empty when we walked in but there were a lot of takeouts as we sat down to eat. AMBIANCE: 4/5 The ambiance is a little odd for me. The chairs and tables are small and plasticky thin. The floors were sticky but the tables were clean. The restaurant is bright and bigger than expected. FOOD: 4.5/5 We ordered 1. Sizzling Pepper Beef: I LOVE sizzling platters. However, the sauce used on this wasn't the pepper gravy I was used to at HK cafes. The dish was still delicious and came out HOT. There was a lot of protein at first glance but it seems like underneath the beef it's all onions - not sure if it's worth $16 but great to try. 2. Singapore Noodles with Chicken: LOVE THIS. I told the staff I didn't eat pork and if I can swap it out with chicken. They told me they'd have to remove the shrimp as well which was fine. The chicken was actually very very good - it was a little fried and savory. I just wish there was more noodles in this dish as they used a lot of bean sprouts. MUST GET. Mr. Gao is one of the selections and it is located on Main street, super close to McMaster University. The prices of food are a little on the high range for Chinese food, I suppose it's because of transportation fee and the lack of Chinese restaurants here. The dish sizes are all right, the food is decent as well, I felt like it was too salty for my tastebuds. The waiters speak English and I hear many of them speak Mandarin as well. Do not come here. There are so many things wrong.. Food is not good. My sweet and sour pork was very acidic.. Waay too sour and loaded with giant chunks of white onion that barely seemed cooked. I ate here a few weeks back( on a Saturday evening ) when a group of young students were making so much noise that it was MOST unpleasant. The noise was way over 100 dB. I finished as quickly as I could & asked the cashier where these students were from but she was not sure. But this second time, we decided to share dishes and order together and my friends knew what they were doing and a few of them were Chinese, so that definitely helped...funny to hear them reminisce about their mom's cooking as they looked through the menu. We got (in order of best dish): the poached fish in sichaun sauce - amazing, extremely flavorful, huge quantity, made with care, the chili chicken - nicely spiced, the shanghai noodles - decent, although quantity is kind of small and the pork and green beans - pork is julienned, somewhat buried under the beans, flavor was good. I had the eggplant and minced pork with rice and my friends had the braised pork, and a shrimp and beef on noodle. All the food was great at a very reasonable price and the portions were generous. Have been there three times now, and every time was a delight. It was only on the last occasion the owner was there and came to hang out with us for a while. He gave us all "heavy" chopsticks normally reserved only for the staff and it was very much appreciated; I hate using light wooden chopsticks. Such a friendly and inviting person. I've been looking for "authentic" Chinese for a while and I assume this is as close as they have very little you would find on a generic western takeout menu. The squid was the best I've ever had, hands down, and I've had it at more places than I can count. Lightly battered with rice flower and cooked to perfection. We order it every time as an appetizer. The noodle dishes were great, the hot pots were great..so far I haven't had a single thing there I didn't absolutely enjoy. I want to bash the shrimp we ordered because they came still in the shell and it was a mess to eat, but even they are too good to pass up. While visiting Hamilton, I was with family at Mr. Gao's two days ago for lunch. Place was clean and bright; service was timely and very attentive (one person of our party had gluten sensitivity). I am vegetarian and ordered a main dish with eggplant, potato and onion, beautifully done in a perfectly spiced sauce. The menu identified its spiciness with a single pepper. Wonderful. Just enough heat to be hugely pleasurable while allowing the vegetables' flavors to shine through. And that was still true the next day with the portion of my lunch that I took home. I would recommend this restaurant to the students nearby as it is much better than what is offered on campus and nearby as well as within the price range of most students.
