It's become a dumping ground for the homeless, vagabonds and dodgy people in general. It's just not safe to shop there since 2021 and it's only getting worse and worse. The owners changed 2 years ago and the prices have jumped up as well. I've had enough after two close calls with the dregs of humanity. Don't go after dark, the weekend or heck at all. I've been shopping for basic items at Dan's for years, but I'm fed up with that dump and will no longer shop there. The register area is a mess. No one knows where they're supposed to stand in line, which irritates the customers, and some of the clerks are unbelievably rude. They actually act like you're bothering them; they never smile or say hello, and almost never thank you for coming in. Furthermore, if you end the transaction with a thank you or the hope they have a good day, they ignore you. I know the clerks are beleaguered by the stressful working conditions there, but there's no excuse for such poor treatment of customers. I blame this not only on the clerks, who I presume are poorly paid and trained, but the owners for having such low standards. They seem to have no comprehension of what customer service really means, nor do they seem to care. I've spent a lot of money since I began shopping at Belltown Grocery since 2014, but no more. I predict that if management doesn't improve the store's customer service, they will continue to lose business and eventually go OUT of business. read more

The website has the hours posted as 12am which they have always been in the 5 years I've been coming to this store so it's really sh*try when I get here at 11:56 and they have the doors locked and won't let customers in. Plus they were already finishing counting the tolls so it's not like they just locked the doors.!if you're going to post your hours you should have your employees follow them. For a bodega I really cannot be more pleased. They really do a great job of providing so many essentials that you might need and be able to find at a larger grocery store but without having to leave downtown. I've come in here so many times looking for a missing ingredient or something I forgot to pickup at the store and I often find what they need. The staff is friendly too. I think my only complaint is that their are always tons of strung out folks outside the front door and sometimes inside as well due to the location and so sometimes it feels a little unsafe coming down here later in the evening. It would be nice if they had a security guard. But none the less, I keep coming back and recommend you check them out too. read more

Used to be a great little place. No longer. Bad enough to pay their high prices and dodging druggies in the doorway, but then to put up with their bullying attitude towards customers is asking too much. My 15 years of patronizing this store has gone out the window with the new management who doesn't seem capable of recognizing that repeat customers means repeat profits. You can go in there everyday now and remain a faceless cash cow to milk. They're not interested in treating you at least as well as most livestock get treated. Dan's Belltown Grocery is a miracle for two reasons. First, Dan's has a great selection considering it's slightly bigger than a New York bodega and 1/1000th the size of a Safeway. They carry wines, whole bean coffee, meat, cheese, and even boast a freezer section! On one aisle, you'll find a a small hardware section, which is invaluable to a neighborhood without a hardware store. Prices reflect the high price of rent, but their sales are very good (check the flier). Second, they continue to offer this service to the Belltown community despite the constant pressures of being located in a drug-problem area. Given this stress, it's amazing that their staff is so helpful, considerate, and friendly. Hats off to Dan's Belltown Grocery! read more

Probably my favorite Belltown corner store, and I've been to them all. It's affordable (for a Belltown corner store; i.e., do your actual grocery shopping at QFC in LQA and pick up last minute stuff at places like this), the staff are courteous and have the patience of saints (more on this later), they sell pretty much everything I would want to buy in terms of snacks, they allow dogs, and they even accept Apple Pay. The only real "downside" (though it doesn't bother me personally) is that it's very much a Third Avenue corner store. There's usually no shortage of street people and sketchy characters in and around the store. Nothing harmful or dangerous at all, but it's slightly outside the natural comfort zone of middle class white folks who are unaccustomed to city life and socioeconomic diversity. read more

It's not fair to compare Dan's with a giant health food store like Whole Foods, and when compared to other small groceries/convenience stores, Dan's is *awesome*. There's a decent selection of wine, an entire baking section and it devotes a section of the freezer to vegan meat. I am pretty price-conscious and I have not found Dan's to be extravagant, especially since the other two nearest stores -- Whole Foods and Kress IGA -- are not exactly known for being cheap. Better, the employees here are all responsible adults -- no constant stream of teenagers like at other places. They know their customers, they're always kind (extra points for this given all the crazies they undoubtedly have to deal with each day), and they won't hesitate to walk back and get chocolate syrup off a high shelf for me when they just as easily could have given me verbal directions to the stuff. read more

Dan's is a good spot if you just need a few small things and are too lazy to make the hike to IGA or Whole Foods. I wouldn't reccomend doing any hard-core shopping there as it is pretty pricey and it smells like bum and thrift-shop. It's a good place to people watch as there is always a steady stream of 3rd ave skells and crackheads coming in and out. They have a pretty good beer selection and a suprisingly good produce area. I still refuse to buy fresh meat however. I'll go elsewhere for that. Pro's : Dan or the guy that I imagine to be Dan rocks a sweet members only style jacket and I get a kick out of the early 80's macho look. He rocks it though and it works well for him so more power to him. There also seems to be "K-Billy's Super Sounds of the 70's" playing whenever I'm in there which is nice. I love how people in Seattle use the word 'grocery.' Most of these, most of these are glorified convenient stores, but I digress. Dan's only use for me is for the quick "I feel like a snack" type of foods. The store is typically rather crummy looking, stock of the fresh sections always looks questionable, the whole store has an iffy look to it, but I'd rather go here than pay an extra 20% at Ralphs, plus I could use that extra two blocks worth of exercise. I lived in downtown Seattle for about a year, The only real neighborhood grocery that wasn't Target, Whole Foods or Safeway in Queen Anne's was this one. Honestly this grocery store saved me a lot of nights when I came home from work, easy food and open late. This is honestly the ONLY grocery store in the Belltown area that's open late. Whole Foods is expensive and overpriced, which kind of doesn't count.' The problem is the place hasn't been cleaned for months, but for what it's worth, it's like an extremely large liquor/grocery store. Dan's is all about the location. I work a few blocks away, and I love being able to grab a drink or a couple of staples for the office. The staff simply rock. It's more than I would pay outside of Belltown, but it's more than Ralph's. And really, during the work day, those are my options. The selection trumps most convenience stores. read more

Convenient place to go for grocery items and household stuff. Very convenient and the prepared food there is reasonably priced. However, occasionally you will have to be prepared for the homeless guys who will inevitably come approach and asked you for money. The items are more expensive than most grocery stores but heck, for the convenience this place provides, it's well worth it. You have to love Dan's...for a small store they have a pretty good selection, and of course since it's independent the prices reflect that. My favorite part - as mentioned by other reviewers - is that they're open late (which is good when I'm walking to the bus stop and have some time to kill because the fucking 358 only comes once every half hour after 7), they keep their soda machine on late - past when their deli closes, and of course, the local flavor - junkies trying to shoplift, cops in there all the time arresting someone, etc, etc. Cool. And any small grocery store that carries marshmallow fluff is good by me. read more

We needed very basic breakfast supplies. We had a girl showing us around to where things were. I use my credit card & their terminal flashes multiple prompts (more than usual ones) & tells me to 'remove my card' now. I take it out. The cashier tells me it was too soon. Ok. We do it over. She recharges me. Fine I think-- we're out. I go back to my daughter's place and find out from hubby (back home) that DAN'S had double charged us, he could see online. What? Two of us are in town for only 2 days for a bridal shower happening soon after getting supplies at Dan's & getting ready. I call Dan's & tell the girl what happened. She suggests I come in, I said I couldn't because we were on that tight schedule & could she see if the mgr could cancel 'one' of the duplicate transactions remotely/digitally. She said she didn't think they could do that. I didn't wanna go in circles, so asked she have the mgr call me back, since he was supposed to be back soon. Time goes by & no call. I c/b to Dan's. I don't have time to mess with tracking store keepers down, and it's not good business the guy has not called my back. I call again. I get a different girl. I got nothing but attitude on the phone. After her trying to tell me twice I should 'come in to the store', I got irritated & told her it was because I've already TOLD her there's no way I can return bcs of our event & since she was snooty, I called her out on her attitude and said could you husband just have the mgr call me. She gave me grief that she wasn't going to continue the call of incident respect her. Yeah, I said look, I have every right to be upset bcs this happened when we're traveling, they screwed up, & I don't have time to be traipsing back to a GROCERY STORE & they're gonna have to find a way to fix it. I'd had enough of her & asked the mgrs name-- supposedly it's ED. Well, Ed, your cashier's customer service sucks. They are rude millenials who do not understand we're the customer who has every right to be incensed bcs YOU never called & that was A DAY & A HALF AGO. And if one of these fabulous examples of Dan's employees didn't give you my # & pass the message that we needed this addressed then you've got bigger problems than my 'double charge'. You should hire people who WANT to work to help customers efficiently and politely. In review: ya sick Dan's. Even our daughter who shops their, & is a block away in Belltown, says the employees she's encountered the aren't the brightest. However, if they're NOT operating effectively, snark at customers legitimately concerned and later irritated at lack of response, well, ya straight sick is all & we are going through Visa to cancel that purchase. Since then, there have been much nicer employees and less yelling and surly moods in the store. Therefore I've upgraded to a 3 stars because it's still really just a larger, overpriced convenience store, but it does usually have what I need and I like it more than going somewhere like 7-11 or rite aid. read more

Dan's Belltown Grocery, despite being in the crack corner of Belltown, is pretty awesome. Yes, products are a tad bit pricey, but what do you expect from a tiny grocery competing with giants like QFC, Safeway and even Costco? For the people who just happen to live in Belltown and don't have alot of money or a car, Dan's is great. Everyone who works there is super friendly whether it's the old guy, that's been there for x amount of years, to the Art Institute kid that is just earning some extra spending money. In response to the people complaining about checking their backpacks or whatnot, obviously in that area they have to be cautious. When people ask you to give them their bag temporarily, don't take it so personal! Businesses have to keep things consistant, and these days you don't know who the crazy is sometime (probably you...jk)! Anyway, there is the occasional bum, freak, shoplifter, all of the above there, so just be alert and you'll be safe and content at Dan's! As the other reviewers have noted... yes, it is a corner grocery store (not safeway). This means prices will be higher and selection might not be as good (not safeway). That being said: They welcome dogs and have treats. Are open late. And are the second closest food option within walking distance (first being the Abyssian market). I take my dog in there all the time to get a frozen dinner, or chips, or beer (my staples in life). I would not want to do my full grocery shopping here, and I don't. But Dan's is there for late night cravings or whoops I forgot ingredient X, Y or Z. read more

Dan's is a great neighborhood store. They have an awesome candy selection that reminds me of candy bars I could get as a kid like chick o stick, spud , and big hunk! Things the mass market stores don't have and probably never will again. YES it has DOWNTOWN prices to pay it's DOWNTOWN rent and possible pay the employees a living wage. Just moving to Seattle and Dan's is right next door. Better selection then I would have expected for a downtown grocery store. Fresh fruit/veggies and some deli sandwiches in the cooler will be very nice. For this trip got a 6 pack of Coke, pop-tarts, microwavable ginger chicken, and some Asian noodles out of the cooler. Very nice staff, made sure I had some soy sauce for my noodles while checking out and gave me a extra packet. read more
