With the other great Yelp reviews here, I decided to give Bellissima a try. I selected the Celestial Path (1 hour full body massage with Jasmine oil and 30 min of facial). As I arrived, the room was fully prepped with heater on and zen music in the background. When it came to the actual massage experience, all I can say is "WOW". Monique, the owner, was perfectly in sync with my body, from breathing to pressure. She is also calm, patient, kind-hearted and very skillful. I got a Groupon for a Brazilian wax from Bellissima, and I was able to book an appointment rather early in the morning without any issues. When I came in, Thanh was was ready to take me into the waxing room in the back. I was slightly amused at the doctor's office style "long-roll-of-white-paper-pulled-over-the length-of-the-table" for easy disposal between clients. We did underarms first and throughout this time she was very sweet and talkative. The actual waxing though....=[ I have been to a European Wax Center before in the past and I definitely do not remember them doing this many small pulls (as opposed to a few large pulls). I consider myself fairly pain tolerant, but damn..this was pushing it even for me. I wouldn't have minded if my target (read: hard-to-reach-myself) areas were eventually completely taken care of, but multiples pulls over the same area AND extra tweezing still left me with numerous hairs still in place. Needless to say, I was pretty disappointed. If I go back, it'd would probably be for massage or a mani/pedi instead, lol. read more

Spent several hours searching for a local spa for my first massage and my birthday treat to my friend - I wasn't sure what to make of this place after reading other reviews but ultimately decided it was my best bet. Best decision ever! I had some difficulty communicating over the phone with the staff due to their heavy accents (I'm Asian as well, but there were definitely a lot of "what?"s coming from my end), but booked a full body massage and pedicure for two. The store is located in a quaint, suburban part of Berkeley with a wooden sign on the gate. It's wonderfully furnished inside and the scent of incense is very soothing. We were greeted promptly and served fruit water while they prepared our room. They were very patient with us first-timers and I was grateful that it wasn't very busy when we went. I won't claim to be a massage connoisseur so I can't really attest to how good the massage was, but I will say that both my friend and I felt lighter than air and ten times more relaxed after the massage. Our massage therapists were firm and listened to our requests, and bore through my little bursts of ticklish-ness. The pedicure was interesting for me as that was my first one ever too, but I felt like a queen while getting it done. It's been about 3 weeks since our appointment and my nail polish still looks pristine. The women who gave us our pedicures were kind and cute in that Asian mom kind of way - they talked with us about their families and history. My friend said they were a lot more personable than people at the pedi places she usually went to. From the moment you enter, you know you are in a special place (or Fairy House as I like to call it). I love everything from the doorway, garden and welcoming reception of the perfect temperature water with a nice slice of orange all the way to the amazing pedals on the roof of their bathroom which radiated like the sun. But that's not why you are reading this so I apologize for my mesmerizing intro. This was by far the best massage I have gotten in Berkeley (or anywhere for that point). My friend and I had a couples massage and both of us where shocked when the hour ended, since we were convinced it was at least 3 hours that our bodies were being rejuvenated. That's how relaxing it was! My favorite part about the massage was that they spend a good portion massaging my body while the blanket was on. Then they slowly start to move on to your bare skin. I have not had this experience before so it was a great technique. (PS: I get massages regularly). During the entire time there was no talking - best part! At the end, as we were sipping on tea poured from the most adorable Japanese tea set, we noticed all the flowers and orchids in the reception area and complimented the owner on the nice touch to add color via fake flowers. To my surprise, she said they are ALL real. Wait 'til you see these beauties, you won't believe it. When I asked her secret of keeping orchids alive and blooming, she said (quoting) "They are relaxed so they grow" (Now that's a mantra! Should she start her own church?) Priti worked on me for a bit, but the past couple months Maya has been doing the massages and she is SO good! I've never had a bad or even an OK massage here. The nails were jagged and poorly filed and the clear polish was almost entirely chipped off within two days. They weren't busy at all so I don't understand why she did such a sloppy job. My masseuse was Priti! I went to this spa before the New Year with a friend and we got the same massage package (60 min full body, forgot the name of the package). It was INCREDIBLE - after our massages we both talked about it and agreed that we never thought we would never feel our physical pains ever again, haha. Agreeing with me, both of our masseuses were able to pinpoint our trouble areas, without each of us actually telling them where we were having issues! They were very in-tune with feeling out what our bodies worked with and wanted, very formal yet incredibly nice, and the whole environment was serene and beautiful (not culturally appropriative of the aesthetics like most spas, which is important to me). It's been about two weeks and my back issues haven't resurfaced, which is a super pleasant surprise! I'll definitely be going back. Also, tip your masseuses and other beauty technicians! If you can't afford to tip, you shouldn't be going to places which offer the opportunities to do so. Bellissima didn't make it obvious about tips so I had to ask how to tip, which the counter lady gladly let me know how to (you put them in a little envelope which is cute) - another good sign that tipping wasn't "necessarily" a higher priority. read more

At any rate, got an appointment at Bellissima and had a great massage from Carla, who has strong firm hands and was able to locate the tight sore muscle and released it. Being that I am not from this area, This was my first time at this establishment, but it was clean, nicely appointed and I was NOT disappointed at all. Monique is an amazing massage therapist (and facialist)!! I had the 90 minute Indulgent Massage and left feeling relaxed and peaceful for days (and this was during an unusually stressful time). I've been getting massages for over 40 yrs regularly and this was probably the best massage I've ever had- it released all my tight muscles without hurting in the process or feeling sore the next day!! I've had her European Destressing Facial twice in the past and not only does it leave your skin feeling & looking great, her head, neck, and shoulder massage will leave you feeling relaxed (extractions are gentle). So whether you are going thru a stressful time or just want to feel good, I highly recommend Monique- I would give her a 10 if I could!! You get what you pay for... this is a review for the couple's massage. I am by no means a connoisseur of massages, but I've had quite a few and this ranks in the lower half. Came here with now-husband for a couple's massage. It was the week before our wedding and we were in need of some much-needed self-care and stress relief before the big weekend. The entry and reception are nice, if a little overstocked with trinkets for sale - it was cozy and homey, but the tables and racks of sales were not exactly relaxation-inducing. Felt like the checkout line aisle of last-minute impulse buys. We met our masseuses soon after arriving and then were taken back to the couple's room shortly thereafter. Pros: strong massage Cons: 1. Most masseuses ask if you have any injuries, and discuss what type of massage you're interested in (deep tissue, Swedish, etc...) no such discussion here. They just went for it. My masseuse went straight to a deep tissue with firm pressure, which is what I needed - but a discussion beforehand about my problem areas - trigger points, etc - would have been greatly appreciated. 2. Masseuses hands were ice cold. I almost jumped off the table when she first touched me. 3. Massage was not even - right leg was pretty much an afterthought, didn't receive as much attention as my left leg. 4. You could clearly hear the phone ringing in reception (that went on and on and on) and what I assume was a delivery person banging on the front door. Not relaxing. 5. Probably the most unsettling: There was point in the massage where I was lying on my back and an eye mask is placed over my eyes - this was fine. Then my masseuse proceeded to pull back a curtain - I noticed the room got brighter. Now, the couple's massage room is on the first floor of the building and this window faced their courtyard/front of building. I was uncomfortable in that parts of my body were exposed to who/God knows what. I'm not an overly shy person - but I found this inappropriate. At least warn/ask first! TLDR: There are more professional massage experiences out there. read more

Was visiting from out of state and needed to kill some time on a Tuesday so I decided to treat myself to a massage at Bellissima. Boy, was that the best way to kill time. Ever. I had a 60-minute massage with Thana and loved every second of it. After the massage I learned that they offer a dollar a minute massage on Monday and Tuesday. You get an hour long massage for $60! Any other day of the week it is $75 for an hour, which in my opinion, would be worth every penny. I left the salon wishing I lived in the Bay Area just so I could frequent Bellissima to get massages from Thana. Highly recommend this place! read more

This place is right by my house so it's super convenient, the woman at the counter is super sweet - I've had about a half dozen massages here. Inu is great, can't wait til she gets back from vacation. I just had a massage with a massage therapist I haven't had before and I was pretty disappointed. Her touch was really light, unsure and shaky. I realized that she had long nails that seemed to be preventing her from massaging fully. She was kind but I got the feeling she was new. I also heard a loud conversation, someone clipping their nails and a woman screaming from a movie someone must have been watching in another room. I'm leaving without feeling relaxed which is why I splurge on a 90 minute massage every so often. I love to tip well, a holdover my my own service days, but couldn't do it tonight. Bummed. I really wanted to like this place and thought I would because of the good ratings on Yelp but I think this was one of the most painful Brazilian wax I ever had :( it was different from other places I've been. Usually when I get a Brazilian they will use hard wax on some parts to pull it off, but at Belissima they used soft wax (I think) the whole time and used strips to take all the wax off. This made it take a lot longer and my wax took over 30 mins, usually I'm done in 15-20. It also didn't take the hair out of the roots, and so my hair grew back a lot faster and I was left with more ingrown hairs than before. The service was good and the lady was super nice, but I don't think I will come back here for a wax unfortunately read more

I can't believe I had never been here before! Just a small, unassuming day spa tucked into an old Berkeley Victorian, but the spa was relaxing, well thought out, and professional. I got a couples massage with my wife yesterday and we both said it was one of the best massages we'd ever received. They are really strong! They're also very attentive to your needs should you find you are able to surface from the relaxation cloud and ask. At one point I asked for a pillow under my knees and the massage therapist not only placed one, but also stretched out my knees and hips so that I could be loose and comfortable. I was really sketched out about going to a spa in the basement of a Victorian apartment building across the street from my house. After all, my neighborhood isn't the best, and who ever heard of a spa in a basement? I envisioned damp, dark, musty rooms and I've been warned about what can happen in unsanitary conditions. I can't believe I can afford this place! Their quality is amazing- complete dedication in your comfort. I just moved to Berkeley and really wanted to go to a day spa to celebrate my birthday. I found this place on Yelp and went to their website. They have a 20% off deal if you go on your birthday! That added to the already discounted Celestial Path combo, and I was set. I called two days ahead of time and was able to pick whatever time I wanted to come in. I got there fifteen minutes early and there was no wait. Thanh started me off with an hr massage. Her hands are pure bliss. I started coughing part way through and she was very kind about it. I was given water and she patiently continued through the coughing. The massage transitioned into a 30 min facial in the same room. Wonderful smelling fruity lotions were used and my face looks great now. Thanh really took the time to relax and nurture my face. After that was a 30 min hydrotherapy bath. I was iffy about this and really only got it as part of the combo, but I would highly recommend it for others. You can add it to anything for $15. They led me to the room and carried all of my belongings for me. A hot bath with limes (awesome addition to a bath!) and leaves was waiting for me. The room was clean, dimly lit to set the mood, and I was able to relax more than I have in any bath at home. Before this I had never gotten more than a massage at a spa, but with these prices I will hopefully be able to treat myself again and again.
