I got a massage from Catalina and honestly it was one of the top 3 massages I've gotten in my life. I'm a bit of a massage noob so went in not knowing what to ask for - other than a complaint about my upper back pain. The massage was extremely relaxing and worked over all my muscles - several I didn't know I even had. I went here on a gift from my partner. The ambiance when I walked in was nice and serene. I marked exclusively that I didn't want my neck or face massages and I was still touched in those areas, so the service I asked for wasn't given. My partner tried to call ahead and pay and ask for any clarifying issues and she received a lot of attitude from the front desk person. It was a subpar service for the money as there are cheaper options in Chinatown that will also follow requests. Had such a nice time at this day spa yesterday. I had trouble finding a spa that could accommodate a party of 4 for massages and facials with two weeks notice, but they were able to fit us in. The owner was very kind and prompt with confirming our appointment and answering any questions I had. The spa is like a hidden gem in an otherwise busy area of Berkeley. My mom had the complete healing package, my sister had a hydrating facial and my other sister and I had indulgent massage. Since I'm 38 weeks pregnant my attendant Polly had me lie on my side. The facial consisted of steaming, pore extraction, cleansing, moisturizing, a face and eye mask, and a scalp and shoulder massage. If I could give 0 stars, I would. This is a review for a service I scheduled and prepaid ahead of time, but never received. This is for their poor customer service and hidden cancellation fee. I called to ask about what kind of massages they offer, and the lady on the phone curtly says to look at their website. I mentioned that there isn't much info on their site and asked if she could go over what their massages entail, but she didn't give much description and was a bit rude. Wanting to book something quick for my boyfriend and myself, I made an appointment for two massages scheduled in 2 days. I needed the receipt ahead of time for an expense, so I asked if I could prepay over the phone and they said that was fine ($150). At this time, I was out of town and was planning to fly back to Oakland area the next day. The following day (1 day before my appointment), my flight gets rescheduled to the day after due to bad weather. By the time I found out though, Bellissima was already closed and wasn't able to call to reschedule, so I called the next morning (the day of my appointment) to see if I could reschedule. No answer, so I texted their phone # to ask about rescheduling due to my situation. The lady texted me back giving me a hard time about rescheduling on the day of (which is understandable, but based on my previous call with her I didn't get a good feeling from her tone) and says to call them again to reschedule. At this point I'm not feeling great about giving my business to Bellissima, and ask if I can cancel my appointment altogether - she then says there will be a 30% cancellation fee. I call again mentioning that they did not let me know about the cancellation fee upon prepaying, and asked if they could waive it + give a full refund back to my credit card. Instead of acknowledging this, the lady shallowly dismisses my request and says the cancellation fee will be charged, then hurriedly asks for my credit card info to refund just the $120. I apologized for any confusion, then explained my situation and asked again if there was a way for me to get my full prepaid amount refunded, then she responds saying "call back next week when the owner is here". Bellissima Day Spa exceeded my expectations; I can confidently say it was the top 3 massages of my life out of the hundreds I've had. This place has no bells and whistles. It doesn't have a huge reception or free sauna or champagne like you might get in other spas. But the massage hits so good! I had the fortune of seeing Carla. Her skill was superior to the majority of other massages I've received; she was purposeful and thoughtful about her techniques. She had a great routine that encompassed a full body massage. She also had a warm, kind, gentle personality and was willing to cater to your needs. For example I told her I've been having sciatica and she focused on that area more. My boyfriend and I went to Bellissima to get facials to celebrate his college graduation. The experience as a whole was fine. The ladies were very kind and nice. I want to believe that our experience was not up to par due to short staff. But we started our facials late, no one explained what they were putting on our face, at one point they both left for 10 min, and we ended 15 min early because other customers arrived. I really feel (minus the great neck and shoulder massage) that I could have had the same experience at home. As a side note, I've never had a facial where instead of a real face mask, they put a sheet mask on you and then leave the room. I still gave gratuity because again the employees were very nice, but I don't think the two facials were worth $180 Overall it was pretty disappointing and a let down for such a big occasion I wanted to celebrate :( read more

Decided to surprise my boyfriend with a couple's massage as one of his birthday treats, and thanks to the power of Yelp, I found this place within a walking distance. I called about 3 weeks ahead to book a session. I decided on the Complete Healing package from their website ($90 per person, discounted from $150), which includes a 30 minute exfoliating back salt glow and a 30 minute herbal facial. Old Yelp reviews had stated that the hot tub baths were included, but due to the drought, they now charge $15 per bath, which I find to be fair, so I added that to our package. The lady who takes bookings on the phone has a heavy accent, but she was otherwise clear and was happy to answer all my questions. On the birthday boy's special day, we walked together to this location. It's an adorable baby-blue Victorian house with a cute little garden with a statue of Buddha. Something of a cross between an enchanting fairy tale and a zen garden. We were a few minutes early, but once we walked in, the ladies were ready to get going immediately, so there was no wait. For the massage and facial, we were taken to a dimly lit room with relaxing Tibetan (no idea if it is, but it sounded like that to me?) music and two massage tables for each of us. It was a cold winter day, and my poor feet had been freezing cold since the previous evening, and when I got onto the table, it was so warm, and my feet felt instantly happier. There were robes for each of us. I believe it was Thanh and Priti who were our masseuses. Even though the website said that the 30 minute exfoliating back salt glow includes back, neck, and shoulder massage, I was also given a massage for my arms and legs. That was really appreciated. We had warm oil massaged over our skins, and the exfoliating salt rubbed on our backs. The facial was very soothing, and we had cucumbers put over our eyes as well. After that, we were lead to the room where two bathtubs were filled for us. It's a small room, which also included a shower stall if we wanted to take a shower. One bathtub had the bubble jets, and the other was a claw foot bathtub. Not only were they filled with wonderfully hot water, they also had slices of lemons and rosemary and other leaves. They also left us a large jug of water with a slice of orange, and two cups to drink from. Even though the bath is said to be 15 minutes, I think we were relaxing in there for longer. They didn't say anything. Also, since it was my boyfriend's birthday, he showed them his ID as proof, and we got a discount. I was even given a card, and if I reach a certain number of sessions, I get $10 off one. The ladies here were very sweet. My boyfriend even said that he was experiencing a mild wrist pain earlier, but after the massage, he no longer felt it. He was very happy and felt relaxed and pampered. Success! This was a very relaxing and restorative experience for me. For my 26th birthday treat I decided to splurge and went for the works. I started off with an eyebrow and upper lip wax, then a therapeutic bath, following up with a hydrating facial and finishing up with a reflexology massage. It was all amazing! I would have to say my favorite part was with Priti as she did both my facial and reflexology. Very sweet woman with very sure and strong hands. She started my facial with a scalp massage and I was off! It was all so peaceful I fell asleep! And with the reflexology she didnt stop at my feet, oh no. She went all the way up to my thigh. Sigh... I don't like spending my time and energy on leaving bad reviews but unfortunately for this business it was necessary. My hope is that they grow/learn from my experience so it doesn't happen to anyone else. So, this was my experience... I was excited when someone at Bellissima returned my call right away and was able to see me at the last minute on the same day. Upon my arrival I was greeted warmly and the place had a relaxed vibe (which I love) however as soon as the therapist guided me to the treatment room without discussing the areas my body needs attention (intake form) that for me was the first red flag. Secondly the massage table was hard super uncomfortable, it seemed like I was waiting for a while. When she finally came into the room I told her where my body needs attention and the pressure I need on those areas once the massage had started, she kept disconnecting every time she needed to reapply oil and that was very distracting, I kept telling her that I need more pressure and she kept doing the opposite. Ugh! I've been getting treatments for over 20 years and I can tell right away if the massage is going to be exceptional. I stopped the massage 15 minutes into it and couldn't get dressed fast enough to get out of there. What a shame.
