We stopped by Belle Marie Winery an hour before close on a Tuesday. Located right off of Champagne Blvd. (I kid you not) in Escondido, this is one of many wineries in the area. We easily found parking in their complimentary lot. Ambiance (4.5/5): This is one of the things that make wineries great... the scenic views. While they have a tasting room inside, your best option is to sit outside on the small yet charming patio. The best part is that you'll enjoy the mountains in the background as you sip on your vino. Service (4.5/5): We ordered a bottle of wine about 10 minutes before close. One of the owners was nice enough to allow us to stay outside on the patio way past closing time. He said we could stay as long as we wanted. That's the type of service you rarely see at drinking holes these days. Food (N/A): They had various snacks to purchase and you can also add chocolates with wine flights but we were on a liquid diet. Drinks (4/5): If you're interested in doing a wine tasting, they have both a red and white option. The prices are affordable (especially by California standards) for both flights and if you'd like to purchase bottles of wine for enjoying there or to take home. I did the red flight. They serve it to you on a cutting board of sorts with a piece of paper giving you a short description of each wine. From there, we had a bottle of sauvignon blanc. I didn't take any wine home, but you can get a discount if you buy in bulk. One last thing that made Belle Marie an awesome winery is that it was one of the few open on a Tuesday in the area. A lot of them are open on the weekends only or Wednesday-Sunday or Thursday-Sunday. Belle Marie delivered on the only day we could stop by. For that, I'm grateful! read more

As for the wine, the flights were limited to just a choice of all-white or all-red. I got the red flight and was hoping for some bolder flavors, but perhaps they are better known for their whites? A very cute winery with good selection of wine. I came with a few friends and our dogs (yep, it's pet friendly!) and had a great time. The white wines were better (in our opinion) than the reds. We all shared two white wine flights and two red flights ($15/flight). After that, we got a bottle of Sunshine Daydream and one Verdelho to share. They both were very very good but the Verdelho was definitely my favorite - very fruity and dry. Each bottle was $28 so overall, the prices and the place were amazing, we are for sure coming back! read more

I am travelling in my RV and found these folks through the Harvest Host membership. This means I got the pleasure of spending a night here. It was a lovely way to end a day. I was delayed so phoned ahead and they had my white wine flight ready as I pulled in at 4:50. The team was so friendly and found me a sunny spot to sit outside in Adirondack chairs that gave a view of their lovely courtyard. Several groups appeared to be picnicking with their wine flights and/or bottles. Their was no urgency for anyone to leave even when the tasting room closed. I was surprised how much I enjoyed the Blanc de Blancs Champagne-style sample. (And I'm not a "bubble" person!) I stayed overnight in the lower level parking. yes, I could hear the highway noise but that was offset by overlooking a large nursery. I definitely recommend stopping here when travelling south to San Diego Very easy access from the highway. read more

What an incredible winery! Great customer service and great wines! The location is very well kept and clean and has plenty of seating areas for you to enjoy your glasses or bottle of wine. First time here, but after reading the reviews, I decided to pack a picnic and enjoyed most of the afternoon at this winery. I had two small children with me and they also really enjoyed the outing. This winery is fantastic. I 1st went last year on my birthday for a wine tour and I called to let them know I'd be coming in to see if they could accommodate my party. They were so kind over the phone so that was the 1st stop at the winery. An amazing time was had that I went again this year for my birthday as well. I feel this winery is underrated and everyone needs to know about it. There's a building on the grounds that looks like a castle. The grounds are absolutely beautiful with Orange trees and a gazebo and a lot of tables and picnic tables. There's also plenty of shade if needed. I did the red wine flight which was $15 let me tell you this was some strong wine. Parking was easy for a 25 person party bus. The staff is wonderful easy parking and the prices were great and the wine is delicious. Check this out the next time you're in the Escondido area. read more

I visited the winery recently while on a trip back home to SoCal to visit family. It was lovely! I had a flight of whites that was very reasonably priced and the wines were exquisite! The view and grounds were wonderful too and the owners...I met two...were very friendly despite being pretty busy. I will be back! PS BTW, they do not sell food there...just light snacks...but they will let you bring a picnic to eat at the outside tables, in the gazebo, or on the grass. This is my 2nd time visiting this winery. I was last here about 4 years ago on Halloween. Super fun event. The wine is pretty good and the peaceful atmosphere is a plus. I find the service to be average. Meaning that if you are not a regular then you may not get as much attention or conversation as you would expect from a winery, especially since breweries and wineries are part of the hospitality business. I think it would be beneficial to discuss the wine flights after serving them but the menu sheet helps. The music they play is wonderful! The throwback jams relaxed me while enjoying the nature that surrounds the place. The inside is spacious and organized. I found the white sparkling brut to be very dry as expected but dry enough to make a delicious mimosa out of! I really liked that. Never would expect to be able to make a mimosa with a white wine but this one could totally do the trick. My favorite was actually the Chardonnay which shocked me. I personally feel that the place lacks diversity and that is a huge factor me. In fact, a lot of wineries in this San Marcos/Escondido area lack diversity. The way to pull more people in from different backgrounds is to dedicate events catering around the culture. Have a cutural event and spread the word as fast as possible. Anyhow, a relaxing place, a bit stiff but decent spot to sit and enjoy a few glasses. read more

What a hidden gem! This is the ultimate secret spot. This winery has a castle!! Flights of red and white are $20 each. The wine is good!! It is not overcrowded and I feel like not too many people know of this winery. I come on the weekends mid day and it is never busy. I bring a blanket and lay it out on the grass with the family and watch my kids run around the grass. They have citrus trees all over and it's fun to watch my kids try to jump up and grab the oranges. I'd bring your own lunch and order their wine. Perfect date or family outing. read more

A hidden gem tucked away in plain sight off the I-15! I've passed by for years as I headed toward Temecula not realizing what I was missing. What a treat as an impulsive decision caused a friend and I to stop in. The wine tasting is reasonably priced and the staff was absolutely amazing! The fact that they do not have a menu may look and feel like a lemon BUT in fact it tastes like lemonade. What a great place to plan a date for two or a larger picnic for family and friends! As you pull in, you're greeted by fragrant lemon and orange trees ... atop the hill there is a quaint castle that would be perfect for a vineyard wedding. The vineyard offers breathtaking 360 degree views of lush greenery, mountain tops, and blue California sky - there is a photo op everywhere you turn. Once you realize you spent an hour taking photos you realize you're there for some wine and relaxation. Nestled between the caste and the tasting room are a varietal of seating areas - some shaded, some not; the outdoor area is pet friendly too! The owners welcomed us as if we had known them for ages and introduced us to their wine tasting menu. The wine selection was delightful; fragrant white wines, a rose you could sip all day, and a stunning selection of reds. Belle Marie is an absolute must! I am looking forward to visiting here again. WOW! This place is definitely a hidden gem! We stopped off here on our way to the Valley View Casino(free rooms). It was a warm Sunday afternoon in So. Cal and we decided to go to a winery. Some were closed or you needed a reservation. We called Belle Marie and they were open for walk in patrons. When we walked in Scott greater us. He was so nice. My friend brought a bottle of Orange Muscat and my other friends got the wine tasting samplers. We found a shaded spot in their beautiful grounds. The area is surrounded with beautiful citrus trees. You can take any of the fruit that you want. Scott was very knowledgeable of all the wines. He was such a nice guy. It's like he opened up the door to his home and invited us in. Their wine - Screaming Chief 5th Alarm Grand Cuvée and the Screaming Chief Malbee were off the hook! I was eyeing this Wine Purse when I came in. While drinking wine I just kept thinking about it. They offer about 8 wines- half of them white and other half red. Unfortunately to try the wine you have to pay the tasting fee. We tried4 wines and purchased 2 bottles and were still charged the tasting fee which I thought was a bit rude and most wineries waive the fee. Flight is $10, bottles between $22-$34. I'd say it's a regular winery price as you are outside of Napa. Wine is good but not as good as some other wineries. Location is nice with a large park like area, seating and and can play cornholes. May be a nice wedding or party location but really close to highway which is pretty loud. read more

Visited this beautiful winery recently. Seating is outside and why not? Nice tables and surrounded by citrus trees and other well cared for plants. Tasting is $15 for 5 wines in a flight. Not my favorite way to taste wines since I like seeing the bottle especially if I'm tasting red wines. Overall I loved the wines but I would've preferred to have had more information about the wines, wine making, winemaker and historical facts of winery. My experience was nice but would've been complete if server would've offered this. 2018 Cab stood out as well balanced. Also 2021 100% Chardonnay even though was 14.2% ABV which is high for a white wine. I will be back and I'm sure it will be a 5 star experience then. read more

Saw this winery off the side of the freeway, so we stopped in on the way home last weekend. The decor inside was cold and castle like. The people inside were nice, but it just wasn't overly welcoming. BF and I each did a tasting. I think we had 5 wines each? There was one red that we both loved, Late Harvest Primitivo, but other than that, we didn't think any of the other wines were that great. I mean, they weren't terrible, but we have had better. It was a nice place to stop on the way home, but not one of my favorites. read more

We've always seen this winery from the freeway and say "we have to remember to stop there next time" and today we finally made it! The wine is great and the owners are amazing! Everything from the way the tasting is presented to the actual taste of the wine was really awesome. My Dad and I opted for the red flight, the wines weren't bitter like some can be, they were very smooth. Plenty of outdoor seating and the grounds where the winery is located are breathtaking. They also have a nice selection of cheese and snacks, as well as sodas for the kiddos (or my hubby the DD today). The owners were amazing and gave us a run down and some interesting tidbits on the wine and how they came up with the awesome presentation of the tastings. We got to meet Max as well, sweet, sweet doggy Max. Great place to bring the family, and dog if you like and just relax and enjoy some wonderful wine and maybe a nosh. Also a great space for an event, especially during the Summer evenings. We will for sure be back! read more

When you're in town from San Francisco (and regularly cruise up to Napa or Sonoma for wine) you're not exactly EXPECTING to wine taste in North County. Yeah, not at all. But my in-laws have certainly experienced the best of Napa and Santa Barbara, so I trust them when they say they found something worth checking out. In fact, of all the little wineries I found around the area, this was the only one they felt was noteworthy. Upon arriving we were greeted right away and found the staff to be quite friendly. The grounds are a bit on the cheesy side in comparison to the older more established vineyards (the castle reminds me more of a family fun center than a winery) but they make up for it in personality. Mr Dragoo (yes really) is quite entertaining and provided us with a special pre-release glass that was quite impressive. Too bad it's not for sale just yet...guess i'll have to go back. Grapes hail from the Valle de Guadalupe and there are two labels: Belle Marie and Chateau Dragoo. The Dragoo appeared to be more of the favorite amoung the fam, probably because the Belle Marie is more of that new style with the malolactic fermentation. The Super Tuscan is our parents' favs, and we enjoyed that one as well. My husband also enjoyed the Malbec and I grabbed the vintage port for a cold day! Off the tasting menu was the Montage which was probably the crowd favorite. I found the wine prices a bit high for what they were, but for a $5 tasting and free glass it's a great way to spend an afternoon. Just beware that Mrs. Dragoo is an excellent salesperson. She talked us into buying a third bottle to waive the tasting fee (aka, I bought another $26 bottle to save $5...what a clever marketing genius!) ;) Bonus: Dog-Friendly...Appeared to be dog friendly as there was a boxer in the tasting room. read more

I get some wineries, big corporate ones... may not be suitable for either, but that's the charm of a smaller scale winery and right off the freeway.
