As the name "Mercato" implies, it's not a restaurant, so no place to eat, no place to "do your business" after, and if you've made it to the north end, you already know there's no place to park. -- Italian Sandwich: Long, soft bread, kinda like the kind you had in your school cafeteria, only a million times softer, a million times more crackly, and a million times better. Setting the base are oil, balsamic vinegar, lettuce, tomato, pickles, hots, and provolone. Italian sandwiches usually come flat-stacked or in a C-shape. Here, it's a fluffy stack, with the VERY-thin-sliced-to-order meats-- prosciutto, mortadella, salami-- piled generously but delicately, like tissue paper. More oil and balsamic on the other side seals the deal. It's a glorious sandwich that'll fill you up with the first half, but you'll want to keep eating the second half, because it's so good. The deep flavors of the meats comes through, and that's soft, crunchy bread is a delight. Pro tip #1: Get it with a small side of pesto. Have some bites with, some bites without. We politely asked our waitress whether it could be changed. The waitress was very kind and said she would see what she could do. A man who identified himself as the chef/owner then came out from the kitchen. He told us we would have to pay the difference to change the dish, but the interaction quickly became unnecessarily aggressive. He raised his voice and pointed his finger toward us. I asked him to please stop pointing and speak to us respectfully. The disagreement escalated. At one point I offered to pay and leave. What concerned me far more than the food dispute, however, was what happened when we attempted to exit. The chef/owner physically positioned himself at the entrance and prevented us from leaving while calling the police. My mother and I were extremely distressed. My mother also says he put his hands on her during the confrontation. I called for police assistance as well. Boston police ultimately responded, took our information, and spoke with everyone involved. At my mother's request, we agreed to resolve the immediate dispute there and paid the entire $96 bill, even though most of our food had not been eaten. I understand that restaurants have policies regarding ordered food, and I would have been perfectly willing to have a normal discussion about the bill. My complaint is about how the situation was handled and, particularly, being physically prevented from leaving. The waitress was kind and professional throughout. Unfortunately, our interaction with the chef/owner was the opposite. I'm documenting my experience because customers should be able to disagree about an order or bill without an interaction escalating to this level.

The place is very small, but there was a steady flow of people coming in, ordering, waiting a few minutes for their food and going on their merry way. They make it work. There are only a few stools inside for eating in, but they've got a few tables right out front for the nice weather. I ordered the breakfast grilled cheese with avocado added on, as well as an iced coffee. The coffee wasn't really anything to write home about for me, but I was really there for the sandwich. I grabbed my order and sat at one of the tables outside. Upon unwrapping the sandwich, it looked delectable at first glance. It had a decent cheese pull when I picked up the first half. For the first bite or two it seemed like everything inside worked together in harmony; that is until I realized that the bacon wasn't crispy. Not like it was just a little chewy on the ends, but legitimately undercooked on at least one side. To me, not many things are more dissatisfying than biting into gelatinous, underdone bacon. Not sure if this makes me nitpicky, but it kind of ruined the sandwich for me since I ultimately ended up picking about half of the bacon out. If the bacon was crispy or otherwise cooked more evenly, this surely would've been a knockout sandwich and the experience as a whole would've been worth at least four stars for me. Sunny Girl really seems to have a lot going for them; a good location, fresh ingredients, a loyal and ever growing customer base, an overall good concept. I genuinely want to like the place and my hope is that I just happened to catch them on an off day.
