It's been a long time since my work has sent me this route going to Boston, but I found myself traveling to Boston early this morning from Portsmouth and I was really really hungry and was trying to look for a place to eat close to my hotel in Chelsea. I just had to try the alcapurrias and empanadas so I ordered 1 or each and I have to say I absolutely LOVED the chicken burrito it was FULL of flavor and the lady on the phone sounded so nice when I called and asked for some extra salsa on the side. The beef empanada was pretty good I would say out of the 3 I tried Chicken & Cheese Beef Shrimp The Shrimp was my favorite ! The other two were pretty good but I think flavor wise the shrimp empenada knocked the other two out of the park. The Burrito was so flavorful! I would highly recommend it ! I'm pretty disappointed. I purchased 14 empanadas, and they were awful--full of oil, the meat was sour-tasting beef. It seems like, after cooking, they just picked them up from the oil and tossed them into the silver bag, which you can see is filled with oil at the bottom. read more

UNBEATABLE. So grateful I found this place! Go, order the Pernil (roast pork) with rice, and a tres leche cake. Total was $15/16. The pork was tender, and the servings were enough to feed me for 2 meals. A meal like this in Boston would be $25 lol The woman was lovely. The first time I came, I asked to use the restroom before offering to buy anything and they said of course, and let me use the bathroom past the kitchen! I was not expecting that. I would give this 3.5 if I could. Affordable Latin American and Caribbean food in Cary Square! My husband and I checked out this place last night for dinner. Street parking can be hard to come by but we found a spot close by. Bella Isla is a small restaurant with a few tables and a counter to order. I had checked out the menu online beforehand and it was a bit different than what was displayed on their board. Most of the food is at the counter on a steam table while several other options are cooked to order including sandwiches, burritos, and tacos. The owner was very friendly and let us try some of the pepper steak and explained the other items. I'm not a huge fan of food that's been on a steam table for unknown hours so I chose to order a chicken quesadilla. My husband got a beef burrito and we also tried one of the beef empanadillas for a total of $19--super cheap! They offer several bottled and canned beverages but no tap water for free. The owner ended up giving us two bottles of water free of charge. Our food came out pretty promptly. My quesadilla was huge and came with chips and salsa (not homemade from what I could tell). The quesadilla was fairly good--lots of cheese, chicken, a bit of guacamole, lettuce (not sure why), and tomato. The burrito was also huge! It had yellow rice, beef, and other traditional fillings served with chips. The empanadilla was a fried empanada with a basic beef filling--very simple and tasty. Overall, it was very affordable but the food didn't blow me away. The interior is very clean as well. We noticed several customers who came in to pick up carryout so it seems like a fairly busy place! read more

Asked if we could have it with beans. Lady said, of course, we can make it however you want. We go there, we ask again, she remembers talking to us on the phone. We ask again if we can have with no meat, just beans. She says no problem, and the kitchen gets started on making the mofongo. My husband has a nearly 10min conversation with her about veganism (she was very curious). The mofongo is ready. We ask for the beans. She reaches for it, then says, "oh but it has pork." FOR REAL? So I'm having dry ass mofongo with NOTHING. Not even a salad because even the salad has fish in it. Paid for a dry ass ball of platanos. Also ---- it does not taste like mofongo. I've been coming to Bella Isla for almost two years now. The Cafe on 22nd closed and they now have the one location, more central to my opinion,the Bella Isla Express. I've brought family and friends from out of town here. Hands down best Puerto Rican food you can find, even better than my local spots in Boston. Typically you get Spanish rice, beans, and you can choose a meat. A plate can be $10-$12 usually unless you ask for a less food. But I don't see why you would want to do that. Every single item here is coated with deliciousness. I know I would usually recommend a specific item, but honestly everything is good.
