I was ignored by a guy when asking where something was. Then a very nice lady helped me with 2 things, and offered to help more. Later, the cashier told me the total was 19.99 when it wasn't (tax). He then was ANGRY with me for pointing that out, as he handed the pile of cash back to me, not counting it at all. I was expecting 30.01 or 30.00, and so it was like, what?...and I was in the wrong somehow. Helpful place if you ask the women for help, which goes along with the history of the place (BBC article about coffee and body fluids). Excellent service in the garden center. A young lady helped me arrange one of my planters and did an excellent job. My garden is currently thriving and looks beautiful. She didn't know the answer to one of my questions but promptly found one of her coworkers to bring over and stayed to learn the answer. Overall I love the garden center and all the lovely employees. Older gentleman yelled at me to "go to a big box store!" in front of other customers. He is a fat gray haired guy working in grills. He was talking up a woman trying to impress her. Sat his butt on a box and didn't budge the whole time. Had a snowblower in for maintenance. Billed me almost twice what the original quote was. They had the blower for almost 3 weeks. Then it was supposed to be delivered on Monday (cancelled without letting me know), Wednesday (cancelled without letting me know), and finally got it back today. I was able to talk them down to original quote. ***I suggest everyone do this***. Don't let these guys screw you over. Not going to say who I heard this from, but apparently the old boss is a real jerk. Hated by most employees. I can see why they had to sell the family business. Old man Beisswinger would be pissed off, I bet. I'm sure there are nice people working there, but I haven't met them. All I have interacted with are rude, ignore customers while chatting and drinking coffee in the back area away from the customers. Frattalone's hardware is where everyone should go. As for Big Box stores, I went to Beisswingers because I wanted my money to stay local. But I have never been treated as poorly at a Big Box store as I was at Beisswingers. I was quite taken back by a grey haired cashier who made me feel like a criminal for returning a deck plant hanger. I had the receipt and had only purchased the item 4 or 5 days previously. She was ultra concerened that there were screws missing from the kit until a co worker showed her where they were stowed. Anyhow I guess ACE bought the place. I will give this place one star and that is being over generous. We have been customers for years until recently Brought a power washer in for warranty work. After 2 months and several phone calls it was not worked on. They told us the person that works on warranty jobs "works on them when he feels like it". We ended up going and getting it and brought it elsewhere. They struggled to even find the paper work. Brought my lawn mower in to get its blades sharpened. Was promised the job would get done in a week. Every time I called the service staff said it would be a few more days. I finally picked up my mower after two weeks with the job not done. If they would have told me two weeks to begin with I would have taken my mower somewhere else. I love hardware stores‼ especially the old ones that have been around a long long time for they genuinely know " what works and what doesn't". But Beisswengers comes at the top of list after 4 homes in 4 states and GREAT old hardware stores in Connecticut, Virginia, Boston and New York‼ But the reason I am giving 5 stars is because of Mark, the outstanding manager in their pesticide home garden section. He SAVED MY LIFE HOME and SANITY from the worst nightmare true infestation of FLORIDA transplanted FLEAS that my husband brought home on our poor 11-year-old eight pound Shitzu after months of doggy day care. And he forgot to give her Frontline that entire time ......... Florida fleas feed on people mice horses pets and multiply MUCH faster/ can lie dormant in their pulpa for 5 months in empty homes until vibrations from people etc wake them up. After years of marriage and 4 dogs, I have never even seen a flea and I ignorantly went to Petco after briefly studying the internet and purchased Zodiac powder which DID have methoprene ( growth inhibitor) and an adulticide but in an extremely low percentage (.025). Four weeks later after almost daily vacuuming on hands and knees plus two weekends of intense rug shampoo machine renting, I had a true infestation so terrible there was nowhere to sit and I was taking 2-3 showers a day washing hair too. And... just before their visit home, I had been very ill for 10 weeks. Out of sheer desperation I called an excellent exterminator in Florida. I spent hours educating myself on the internet and called Beisswengers after getting zero in-person help from Lowes Home Depot and Mennards. Even the manager at our exterminator ( Plunkets) was in shock when I told him," these Florida fleas BITE and feed on people"......for the Minnesota ones do not as uncontrollably. Mark answered patiently and with genuine interest and concern ALL my questions and my numerous phone calls on safety equipment sprayers respirators Face guards gloves and most of all he helped me find an excellent less powerful product than the 6 % of pyrethrin used in Florida along with the growth inhibitor. Knockout sold by Vets has phenothrin a nerve destroyer in insects, which made me nauseous, created intense headaches and is insanely expensive ( ridiculous spray cans). Mark agreed that room bombs would be ineffective. So we found the perfect product which also had a catalyst and neem oil . I have had to only spray once carefully thoroughly slowly, and the exterminator in Florida said," be patient vacuum everyday and they will be gone in 2-4 weeks". And with the cooler nights, that is finally happening after 8 long long weeks (3 weeks after spraying). Thank you thank you Mark! read more

Less than Zero star. I had my riding lawn mover picked up for a simple blade replacement ( I provided them the replacement kit). I was told that they were 3 weeks out which I thought was reasonable at the beginning of spring when every homeowner like me needs service. This was May 4th. After three weeks no one called me so I called them on may 30th. I spoke to a very nonchalent Steven (I think..) who told me that my lawn mower was not even on their schedule and would I not have called, they would never know it was there. He then asked me was was wrong with it. (1st time). I told me that he was going to have someone look at this and I would have it over the weekend. The weekend went by and no-one called. So I called them on June 4th and spoke to Sean (Shawn??) who again told me to repeat what was wrong with it (2nd time). He also told me that would I not have called, they would not have known it was there . He told be that they would try from the following week-end. Again same thing. As no-one called I contacted them and spoke to Brad (a part Mgr.) who asked me again to repeat what was wrong with it because they did not know and had not yet started on it (3nd time) . He was clearly rude and short tempered and told me that if I was not happy I could drive there and pick up my lawn mower. I drive an SUV incapable of carrying a riding LM. After 5/6 weeks I am still unsure of when I will get my LM. Brad told me that would try to have someone mower on it on June 11th or 12th but could not promise. He was very combative and hung up on me. I am at the merci of these guys and at 60 years old have to use a small 2nd hand LM to cut my grass... 3/4 of an acre... with slopes. Not only are they bad on the service side they are also extremely rude. I would not refer this place even to my worst enemy. They clearly do not care about their customers. Husbo called this "the Byerly's of hardware". A tiny "gourmet Menards". It is a brand new store up the road from their old location with a wonderful, helpful staff of many. They have a huge collection of garden gnomes, fountains and bird feeders. Many Toro mowers of all sizes and prices. They fix them too. Also a paint and stain section I plan on using for my next project. What really excited my son was the Soda Shoppe section by the registers that has many different makers of root beer you can buy by the bottle. Maybe someday he'll want/need a hammer? read more

Ised to go there with my dad at the original store in the late 70s... the uneven floors with the ramps to different areas was something that sticks in my mind My dad would drive the 14 miles each way to this place because they always helped and had what he needed. This ":new:" store in my opinion is horribly overpriced and stocked with condescending and outright ride employees. I really like being berated and told I dont know what Im doing when requesting a part from them. SO thanks... I found my belt clower to home at ace ....and all is well. Nice enough place and huge. I remember going to this place when I was a kid and it was a lot smaller. They have since expanded by leaps and bounds since I was last there. What brought me back was a coupon in the little mail fliers for money off a propane tank exchange, so I hauled the old one over and got a new one. If you need something quick and KNOW where it is in the store, then this place is fine. If you need assistance go anywhere else! I went to Beisengers May 4th or 5th, and all I needed was a matching drywall anchor and screw. I brought the damaged pieces in and asked a large guy(Kirt or Kirk) if he could help me. Begrudgingly he brought me over to where they were located. I asked him if he could help me with the size. He said "no". I thought "oh, ok" then I asked him if they had the plastic sheet that you could find at Menards, Lowes, etc. that you can screw in and find the measurement. Again annoyed, he grabbed it and handed to me. Why wouldn't you do that when I asked for help with size in the first place. Anyway, I'm literally in the middle of asking him about mm sizes and he says, "you good" and just turned and walked away. Great guy! LOL, I feel bad for his wife and kids as he must be a treat at home. I was also in the store a couple months ago looking for plumping pieces. The gentleman that helped me told me what I was looking for does not exist and I should just buy all these parts and redo it. I went straight to Home Depot and they had what I needed. I went to Beisenngers first because it was close but now in hindsight, I will just go to the big stores first as it seems more efficient than getting treated like crap and wasting time. read more

Since they have been closed for a couple years I've tried this store's recommendation and have had the worse crabgrass and clover ever. They do not carry the high quality chickadee Do do like Dege once did. It's a shame and they are cocky as well at this place. Looking for a new supplier in 2018! read more

If you wonder how a business can afford to have a mostly empty parking lot in a new building with dozens of idle staff the simple answer is = high prices! On my 5-6 "have to get it fast" shopping trips to beisswengers I spent 50-100% more than if I went to a big box store. There are lots of 'associates' walking the floor-doing just that -walking, with little intention of helping you. I will only go there if I'm desperate. As far as selection goes, they have a wide variety of brand name equipment and tools. Their prices are a good measure of the highest price you will pay anywhere. In some cases twice as much. You will never hear or see them advertise the lowest prices-impossible. If they continue as the high price leader with their massive overhead and crappy service-countdown to Chapter 11. read more

I love this hardware store. They are my go to place for the hard to find item. Last night it was fiberglass pipe insulation. Beisswenger's does it again. @Larry - Why do they have the fancy new building? Because the city of New Brighton moved them to make room for that big housing development you see going in (albeit very slowly) nearby. As far as the employees "just walking", I am asked every time I walk in the store "Can I help you find something?". If I need help, they proceed to do just that. These guys totally saved me from a complete shower replacement by identifying and sourcing the rebuild parts for my archaic shower faucet. Try that at your Big Box (I did - they didn't) read more

I called them up to get a replacement Honeywell thermostat. The person who answered the phone was pleasant enough, but she didn't know anything about them and told me she'd transfer me to someone who did. I was kept on hold for about 15 minutes. Every so often, someone would pick up the phone (I could hear speaking in the background) but they wouldn't say anything - they'd just put me right back on hold 3 seconds later. I prefer to shop smaller neighborhood stores, but if you can't get good service, then what's the point? read more

I had great experience purchasing a snowblower at Beisswenger's. Mike the service rep. was very knowledgeable about the stock on hand and about different snowblowing machines in general. After I made my purchase, unlike the big box stores, they registered my warranty and put the machine together for me right out of the box, And their price wasn't anymore expensive then the big box stores. It was a great experience and I appreciate that they service power equipment in-house rather then sending it away to get fixed like other hardware stores do. read more

This is my go to hardware store. Great expertise on just about everything. I got my new Stihl Chainsaw here last fall and they gave me some great tips on making it last longer without less maintenance, such as using gasoline without ethanol additives as it clogs the carbs quicker. Maybe a touch more expensive on some items, but very competitve. They do not try to upsell but rather find the appropriate level product for the application and use. RUN, Avoid this place! They don't care about customer satisfaction. It's just take your money and more money. I made the mistake of purchasing this at Beisswengers First I called due to an issue with my Stihl Weed Eater. I explained this has been used for home use and max of 10 times. I was told to bring it in for repair and it would be a few weeks. I took my unit in. The service guy never even looked at the machine. I was it was probably the shaft and assembly. He looked up the parts and told me it would be $118.00 to fix. He then went on to say I could purchase a new unit for $179.99. I thought it was odd he never even touch the weed eater or started it. Thankfully I am smart enough to get a second opinion when I know something is wrong. I called another Stihl seller in White Bear Lake. I told them the same symptoms as Beisswengers. They said they had never seen a shaft and assembly break on a Stihl. They said no way that was the case with such little usage. I was advised to check the shaft by taking 5 screws off the bottom. I am not mechanically inclined. It took a whole 5 minutes and sure enough they were correct. The shaft came loose. Make sure to at least get a second opinion or do your own research. read more

In addition, I came here a month ago to get a new bolt and nut for my battery terminal and another employee was super rude to me. I worked in the mechanical field for over 10 years and I am not stupid when it comes to hardware. This guy should lose his job for the way he treated me today. A local hardware resource that has been around the New Brighton area for decades. Moved up the street when the land they were on was needed for something else. Now their new facility has a neat new look and they are well organized. They have many of the "little" things you might not find in either a smaller hardware store or the bigger box stores like Home Depot. If you live in the area, I'd recommend stopping here first before going to the bigger stores... you'll get faster, more personable service and be more likely to find what you're looking for! read more

Terrible service experience..... Brought in my Honda Versaattach trimmer for repairs after only 2-months of ownership. It would not run properly at full throttle and cut out. Promised it would be ready the following Wednesday (3 business days) and they would call. After 1-week I called to check status and nobody seemed to have a clue as to what was the status. If you don't have the claim number, forget it....they are not be able to look up the status based on your name it seems! So, I drove down there to see what was going on.....they told me they could not duplicate the issue. I said that sure is strange as it does it for me all the time. I told them lets go try it......"Dave" fired it up and it exhibited the exact issue within 1-minute! Zoom ahead to over 3-weeks......I call and they still seem to have no idea of the status of the repair or even what to do with it. I asked if they called Honda for advice? "NO" was their response. Very frustrated I called Honda myself and within 1-week Honda called Beisswenger's and had them replace the carburetor and it was ready to pick up. Total of over 4-weeks for the repair......with 3-weeks of no progress by Beisswenger's. Pretty sad, the customer has to call Honda and get the item expedited because Beisswenger's customer service is so poor they continue to do nothing but come up with excuses. Probably would of still been there if I hadn't called Honda myself. Dave, one of the service members, is one of the rudest & crude people I've ever meet. Some people skills and customer service training are in order. Brett, the service manager is of no help other than excuses for no repair or tries to blame the customer....the trimmer is only 2-months old and ran exactly as the Honda manuals says to! I tried Biesswenger's and paid a premium thinking I'd get some decent customer service and support.......but it was pretty much nonexistent. I can get the same or better support from a big box store like Home Depot.......why would I spend a premium at Beisswenger's? Never again... read more

I've been very pleased with every visit I've ever made to this store. I haven't found them to have high prices, as the other reviewers have. I have made both big ticket (lawnmower, snowblower, water heater) and little ticket purchases (screws, bolts) here. They carry many things that the large chain stores do not. They also back up what they sell. Sure, I could've maybe saved $30-$50 on the snowblower or lawnmower, but I doubt it. Also, my snowblower broke when I got it home. B's service department fixed it for me under warranty immediately. That was a good thing, because everyone in the metro was sold out! read more
