The entire staff made us so comfortable with COVID and the restaurant was set up with plenty of space for social distancing. The food was also unbelievable, we could have ordered everything on the menu and just sat there all day. Lastly our server Rachel was absolutely spectacular. I'm a firm believer that the server has the ability to make or break your dining experience and Rachel definitely made our night. She helped us pick out the best food and gave us perfect drink recommendations based on what we told her we usually like. Went here on Friday and found the place to be pretty cool and inviting. The atmosphere was that you are in a library type setting where all the walls are decorated with book shelves. The bathroom is behind a book shelf and I loved the decor in the bathroom where at first I went to get the yummy rib Sauce off my hands and face and the sink in the men's room was a small rustic metal old school country barrel looking thing. James Dean poster hanging on the wall etc. The waitress we had was lovely and extremely helpful with a good sense of humor and she had to be with the crowd I was with. This place is just plain awesome. The person complaining about raised prices/cash v credit card needs to chill out. Try surviving on the thinnest of margins and paying rent and covering staff salaries and still delivering for your clients after months of being closed - Well done everyone! This restaurant is literarily the best one in Long Beach. It was a great way to bookend our trip to the beach. The range of libations offered was Falstaffian. The first time I went to beginnings I had a good experience, the food was delicious and the drinks were amazing. The waitress did not really pay much attention to my and my girl friend but we were fine with it. Tonight I went with my mom- they had a special "Mardi Gras" menu. We came and once again I had the same waitress. When we were ordering our main courses I had asked her if the catfish was good, she had said it was so good and to definitely get it. She didn't explain that the fish- which was deep fried in corn meal- would be harder type of texture. The gumbo I had, was awful. It tasted like gravy mixed with fat, chicken was raw near bone. When she finally came up to us to ask about the food my mom had gently explained that she didn't know that the fish would be so "crunchy" and the waitress laughed said "crunchy in a good way!!!?" and my mom said not...really... and MY MOM started apologizing. She turned around walked away and told the manager. The manager came up to us and said how is the food you don't like the dish and once again my mom had said that she just didn't expect it to be so crunchy. He told her to pick the corn meal off and mix the fish with sauce and it should be "ok". If we wanted dishes which were "ok" we wouldn't have came to a restaurant with $35 dishes. He was SO RUDE. He said it was a traditional dish and thats how it was supposed to taste. No sorry no nothing. At that point I didn't say anything to the manager about the awful gumbo. I work at a restaurant myself and I understand that not everyone is going to like every dish. But telling my mom to just mix everything together and that it would be okay and not apologizing- is wrong. That is not customer service. The customer is not always right but telling us we are wrong and to just eat something which is hard as a rock- is wrong. They were not apologetic at all. If she explained from the start when I asked her we would've just ordered something else. At the end the waitress didn't even ask us how our meal was- she just put dessert menus on our table and walked away. Disappointing experience. What a shame, used to be one of my favorite places to go in the summer after a day on a beach. Just went for dinner with my family, experienced terrible service. After notifying the waiter of my daughter's severe nuts and seeds allergies, my daughter was served her order with the bread that had sesame, that she, without suspicion took a bite of. We had a party of 6 plus 2 kids. Food took awhile to come out. Four of us received our meals. As they were serving us. The waitress told two of us that there meals couldn't be made. So 4 of us ate the other 2 reordered and after another 45 minutes their food still didn't come out. Finally the manager said he will take 1/2 off the check. But we didn't receive 1/2 our meals. We were so disappointed with our meal here. The decor is very cool, with old and newer books on library-style shelves, accented by author-appropriate touches (such as a photo of Hemingway, situated next to a rack of pipes), black and white, framed photos of famous authors hung up streetside, exposed, brick walls and ductwork, a welcoming-looking bar, mid-century modern, metal chairs against wood slatted tables. Food is served on rustic, slightly warped and/or cracked wooden cutting boards. All this feels really homey and cozy, but atmosphere does not for a really good restaurant make. Our home made potato chips were overdone and the topping of cheese sauce lacked flavor; the turkey burger was on the small-ish side, although being sided by a fried egg, fairly (too) fries, and sliced avocado almost made up for the portion size and hefty price. The quinoa and sweet potato burger was also short on deep flavor and mushed flat down and out of the bun immediately upon biting into it. The side order of brussel sprouts were, as is the new style, charred and burnt on the outside, not to our liking, although the insides were cooked perfectly. Went here last night for my birthday and everything was absolutely phenomenal. Everything we ate had such great flavor. For starters we had a special plate not on the menu but it contained a bowl or roasted garlic oil that you would want to bathe in. Everything you dunked in brought your food to the next level. We also had the crudo trio, charred octopus (so tender) and the eggplant meatballs (you'd never know you're eating a vegetable). Our entrees included the fish and chips, house smoke brisket quesadilla (this is on the starter menu but perfect for an entree), the cast iron rib eye steak and the yard bird. I sampled the steak and it melted in your mouth. My entree was the yard bird and it was the best fried chicken I've ever had. Super moist, full of flavor and a perfectly crispy skin. What they fail to tell you is that the entrees are good for 2-3 people. But That shouldn't matter because you will have leftovers for the next 2 days This was one of the best meals I've had in awhile. Service was on point. Ambiance is delightful. Came here a second time for dinner with Santa and grinch because my son really enjoyed it last year. We were greeted and seated immediately upon walking in. This year they had an ornament on the table for the kids. Nice right? Well I guess that's what cost me the $20 per kid. Last year when I came my son saw Santa, got a balloon animal and cotton candy along with his entree (def worth the money). This year my son got a cheap ornament (glitter spilling out of it) , saw Santa and got chicken fingers and fries for $20. Great for a date or with friends for a special night out. The salmon burger here is always fresh, well-seasoned, and paired smartly with purple pickled onions and a creamy dill sauce, all on a hearty bun. Giving four stars because the owner is great and food is superb. We attended the Grinch dinner tonight (2 adults, 2 small kids) and were a bit disappointed to discover after the fact that we were charged $25 per kid, while the advertised price was $20. It also left a bad taste that I randomly spotted a 20% service charge as I was about to fill in my tip. When I asked, they told me they add it for these kinds of events because they get screwed. Well, we almost got screwed because no one said anything about that being added (for just a table of 4). That being said, we ended up getting charged a 20% tip on top of the $10 extra dollars we shouldn't have been charged. We have been here on at least three occasions during their Trivia events and every time has been a success. I can not express how delicious the Bon Chon wings are (although they are extremely salty). The Ahi Tuna is always a delicious choice. They have everything for small plates to dinner plates and shareales. The drink menu is also quite refreshing, and during Trivia nights they also cater the drink menu to reflect drinks with names matching the trivia theme. If you're thinking going to eat at Beginnings in Atlantic Beach I would advise against it. It's taken me 6 days to actually sit down & write this review. I don't think I've ever written more than 2 bad Restaurant reviews in my life & I believe this is my 3rd in many years. But my Daughter's Boyfriend wrote an honest & not so great review on the evening this all occurred, August 8th. The owners Wife Heather sent him a message asking for his phone number so her Husband Ben could call him & "make this right". He told Heather to have Ben call me & gave Heather my Cell phone number & was told Ben would call me the next day. I gave the Owner Ben 6 days. 6 SIX FRIGGIN DAYS and he NEVER even called me. Here's my story: I asked A good friend to recommend an outdoor restaurant where I can take my Twin Daughters to celebrate their 28th birthday. She recommended Beginnings. Looking over the menu, we were excited & thought it would be something fresh & different from the menu we usually eat from. My friend called the owners Ben & Heather & gave them the heads up I would be calling. I called & spoke directly with Ben on Monday 8/3 & he said he was expecting my call.(looking good so far, right??) I gave him my info for a party of 6. At the end I asked him to confirm & he said "you're all set for 8/8 @ 7:00 at an outdoor table". Wonderful!! When we got there, the Hostess "Jenn" asked for my name, I gave it to her. She said she didn't have it. I said I spoke directly with the owner Ben & he made & confirmed the reservations. She replied "I don't know what to tell ya, your'e name isn't here" pointing to her reservations sheet. When I glanced at it she said" sir I need you to back up". Me with my mask backed up, she extended her arms out again saying back up. So from the street I asked is this far enough?? Bottom line- this night was a DISASTER. Jenn refused to sit us outside as she reminded us that those are the tables for guests that call ahead. I met Ben on the way in, introduced myself & he said "oh yeah you're so & so's friend" Yes Ben I am. I made my reservation with you & Jenn greeted me & my family rudely & told us we didn't have a reservation. The reply I received was an indication that I should have taken my family to another restaurant.He said, you're here now, that's what matters right? I've got to get back to the kitchen? That is NOT the way to make a 1st impression. I went back to speak with Jenn about her rudeness, asking me to step back etc. She claimed she acted that way due to the fact that she is Claustrophobic. I asked her if she realized that we were outside in the open. What could Claustrophobia have to do with anything especially her attitude?? I got the deer in the headlights look back at me. Then we had mistakes on the drinks. Waitress wasn't around to correct it. after 10 mins I walked it to the bar & explained the mistake she brought a new drink to the table with an attitude & told my daughters boyfriend to taste it now, I want to make sure it's to your liking in a really condescending attitude. 6 appetizers all came at different times, 3-6 minutes apart.Who does that?! 5 entrees came & we had to ask for our waitress because she wasn't around. A busboy went to the back & brought out the 6th entree & told us they forgot about this one & laughed.No one refilled our water until we asked. And then when the check came I noticed that the Gratuity would be greatly appreciated in cash was circled 8 times. I counted. Poor taste. Overall the food was ok, the service was absolutely HORRIFIC. I still left a tip, only 15% but they didn't even deserve it. As a fAMILY, WE SUPPORT A lot OF RESTAURANTS AS THEY ATTEMPT TO COME BACK FROM THE FINANCIAL HIT FROM COVID-19.We eat out about 3 nights per week. This place is a gem! Unique menu, attentive and welcoming staff with a warm, friendly can do! Attitude. Everything on the menu I have tasted so far was delicious. Bold flavors, fresh taste and just right portions for sharing or indulging. Came here last night because it's not too far from queens and really close to the bridge. They have valet parking for free which is a +++ and outdoor seating. We chose to sit outdoor because inside was packed and super loud(group of friends talking really loud and music in the background). They have way too many menus like 5 different menus which sucks because the tables are really tiny. The service wasn't too good, our server disappeared for a while but the food was great!!!
