So glad we finally tried this place! Some friends of ours tried this place a few years ago, but honestly, I had never even heard of it until I recently saw a review pop up. I told my husband, "We've got to try this place!" We were going to be downtown anyway, walking along the river, so it seemed like the perfect time. I'm so glad we did! I have to say, this place is definitely hipster--and I mean that in the best possible way! It has such a cool, unique vibe. There are diner-style seats with limited space right up along the bar, outdoor seating, and even a bus that has been turned into dining space. The bus was super cute and quaint inside. Today was absolutely perfect for sitting outside, so we took advantage of the beautiful weather. Our waitress, Nicole, was absolutely adorable! She was friendly, welcoming, and made our experience even better. There was another gentleman helping serve us as well, and unfortunately I didn't catch his name, but he was also super nice and attentive. Now for the food! I ordered the Pastrami Pile Up, and boy, they weren't kidding--it was PILEDDD UP! There was a generous amount of really good pastrami, along with a 1/3 pound burger. The pastrami was delicious. For me, the burger could have used just a little more seasoning and I had asked for medium-well, but it came out more medium. I didn't want to complain, though, and overall it was still good. The tater tots were fantastic! They came out hot, crispy and perfectly cooked. Definitely the kind of tots you keep eating even when you know you've already had enough. My husband ordered the Nevadan Burger with Swiss cheese, and he said it was really good. He also got the fries, which were hot and very tasty. There was so much food that we ended up taking some of the fries and our burgers home to enjoy tomorrow. And then there were the Parmesan garlic wings. My husband said they were absolutely delicious and had just the right little bite to them. I'm not really a wings person, so I didn't try much, but he was definitely impressed! Overall, we had a wonderful experience and are so happy we finally gave this place a try. For starters, the food is decent. With that said, if you advertise Happy Hour prices, they should be honored. I went specifically for the Happy Hour wings, and when I received the check, the price didn't reflect the amount stated on the menu. I asked to speak with the owner, and instead of correcting it, she told me she gave me a quarter off and, with a smug smile, said, "Thank you very much." Sorry, lady, but your food isn't that great for you to be so confidently rude. In addition, this was my second visit this week. I only returned because my sister loves chicken wings, and because of the advertised "Happy Hour" price, I decided to give them another try. We also ordered a plain burger to go with just cheese, and when I got home, it was loaded with all the fixings, including sauce. I called several times to have the issue addressed, but no one answered. When I told the servers about the situation during this visit, instead of trying to make it right, they gave me a half-hearted apology. So yes, the food might be diner decent, but the owner's attitude and the poor service make the entire experience worse. I've worked in customer service for over 30 years, and not once have I treated a paying customer the way I was just treated. And if they want to respond to this review to justify their shitty service, great. Go for it. I was polite the entire time. All I asked was to be heard, for their advertised pricing to be honored, and for some basic appreciation for my business by simply making things right. Instead, the owner insultingly put two quarters on the table, as if 50 cents somehow made up for the $8-$9 difference we were being overcharged. It didn't. If anything, it made an already frustrating situation feel even more dismissive. And it really was an easy fix. If they couldn't adjust the Happy Hour pricing for whatever reason, she could have easily taken the $18 pastrami sandwich off the bill to make up for both the pricing discrepancy and the incorrect order we received during our previous visit just two days earlier. I wasn't asking for anything unreasonable. I was asking for an owner to recognize that her restaurant had made mistakes on two separate visits and make a genuine effort to correct them. In a city full of burger options, she had an opportunity to turn a negative experience into a positive one and potentially make lasting customers out of my family and me. Instead, she chose to be dismissive, smug, and rude over something that could have been resolved in a matter of minutes. I'm still going down a long list of burger places to compare. Beefy's is my 5th place to try. Local spot with character and plenty of seating inside and out with the combo of bar+bus+picnic tables. Lots of fans including mist fan outside to fight the heat. Bus feels spacious but seating is a bit cramped with tiny metal bench seats. Lots of other options other than burgers (hot dogs, chicken, etc) but come on, what's the name of the place? Service was fast, about 15 minutes to get our burgers but the place was near empty on a weekday mid afternoon after the typical lunch period. Insider tip I got: If the place is even 1/3rd full, be prepared for a long wait (minimum half hour?) I noticed quite a few reviews mentioned the prices were high. And when I got the bill for $60 for two people with tax and tip I might have agreed, at first, especially if my main repeat burger joints were In-n-out/Wendy's/Jack-n-Box. But comparing to those places is not apples-to-apples. It's 1/3 lbs patties here (70% more than the just below 1/4 lbs of meat you get on a Double Double) and quite a step up in meat quality from those chains. About $16+ for single patty burger and $20+ for double, but that also includes fries and a drink. I get the feeling people complaining about the prices have to be burger addicts with the review perspective of a frequent In-n-Out patron which allows getting your "fix" more frequently on the average budget. I would prefer if I could opt-out of the full meal deal for a lesser price and just get a burger. If you get a beer, the included soft drink is redundant or unnecessary. And some may prefer to focus on the protein without additional carbs/calories from the fries. But granted this isn't a place to be counting calories. Burger is high quality all around and they cooked them actually medium rare as ordered. Many places don't give a cook temp option or still overcook. Fries were great, better than the freezer burnt airy texture of In-n-Out. My only criticism is both the fries and the patty had too much salt but not to an inedible point. A common occurrence though given the cook's and/or typical frequent fast food eater's salt-desensitized palate. So Beefy's ties at #2 with The Parlor sitting between my #1 Royce and #3 Archie's, then #4 Juicy's. Armando & Sons and Barrio Burger are next. read more

Beefy is like no other diner that you've been to at least for me. It's part dining car, dining bus and outdoor seating. It has the vibe of 1950-ish with a Reno flair. The burgers are made from beef by local distributors, one that is right next-door, Ponderosa Meats. The staff are very friendly and genuinely care about the product they serve. I ordered the Nevadan which was a classic juicy burger with all of the common things like lettuce, tomato, onion, and cheese. It was great. I also ordered the zesty garlic buffalo wings, which were out of this world. One of our dining neighbors gave me a sample of the Thermo nuclear wing, which was way way too hot, but delicious. My wife ordered the pastrami pileup which was piled high with pastrami and also a third pound patty. It was all too yummy with a perfect mix of flavors. Total price $19.50 ...My price: $24.95. I even asked on the phone if they had a combo special he said yes they did and asked me what I wanted to drink. This greasy spoon is a dive that is for sure- extremely cramped inside (we were in "the nook" and some other people sat down and put a stool in front of the only way we could get out which made me nervous of a grease fire breaking out heh). But honestly my burger and the fries were quite well prepared and the components of the burger were obviously fresh/ scratch made and well sourced (I would hope so, burger and fries is over $20 here). Glad I asked before I decided on what burger to try, as I was told the house sauce was a tartar sauce.. who puts tartar on a beef patty? Is it really a tartar sauce like gherkins and capers and tarragon? Or is it a mayonnaise with relish in it? Could you actually explain it if you work there? I don't know. We have determined that Beefy's meets all the marks, and is now the top recommendation if anyone asks where they should go for the best burger in Reno. Pat the owner is a bit of a character and I always appreciate his attention to service and the personality he brings to the experience. A huge plus I found on my last visit, they have a new bus to expand their seating, which has always been a bit of a struggle since it's a small diner. The bus has bench type seating with a TV, heating and cooling, and some neat decor. On this last visit, I opted to splurge and got the Pot Belly Burger which was so good, with Bacon, Ham and Pastrami included. My wife went with the Nevadan and would rate it a great standard burger with cheese. The Parmesan fries were a nice treat and one basket was more than enough for us. Always good beers on tap, we both got a local IPA that was refreshing. Beefy's was awesome (I say as a vegetarian, haha)! They were so accommodating to our large party and let us have the bus to ourselves. Despite the actual restaurant not being the kind of place, size-wise, where a large party should fit easily, the staff made sure we were able to get dinner there. We were a group of 12 celebrating my brother's graduation ceremony and they did a great job getting our order in and out to us in a timely manner. They also didn't make any mistakes with our orders which is really impressive because I think that can be difficult sometimes when ordering such a large quantity of food. Everyone in our party seemed super happy with the options available, this place is very accommodating diet-wise whether you choose to eat chicken, beef, or no-meat. I tried a chocolate-malt shake, the vaquero with a veggie patty and pepper jack cheese, and onion rings. Everything was absolutely delicious! The onion rings were the perfect amount of crispy and salty. The veggie burger was delicious, a little crisp and buttery-tasting, the fried jalapeños added a nice crunch and kick. The bus in front of the brick and mortar looks like a food truck, but it's been converted to sit and eat inside along the windows. The breakfast burger and mozzarella sticks were really good. Always fresh toppings as well. The beef patty is nice and thick and was cooked perfectly to my liking. Fries are ordered separately and shareable. They had a generous amount of garlic, which I loved. One basket is a good size for two people. I couldn't stop eating them! My coworkers loved their burgers too. They all ordered medium as well, but they said it was a little more pink than what they would have liked. But mine was the right amount for me! Beefy's is a small spot, but with big flavor! A classic "hole in the wall" and I mean that in the best possible way. Beefy's is rich with ambience and history. Known for their burgers, it was high time we gave them a try. I ordered a bacon, Swiss burger, served as a combo with Tater Tots and a soda. The burger was amazing in every way. The buns were toasted to perfection, toasty yet still soft. How is this magic possible? The patty is cooked to order, then served with all the usual fixings. The Tater TOTs had a nice snap to the outside, shielding a warm fluffy potato tot on the inside. Just the right amount of salt. Our waitress was working. She was taking care of customers, bussing tables, all the while preparing sides for the incoming take-out orders. Way to hustle young lady. If I had one criticism, the burger was a touch on the greasy side. On one hand, it certainly as flavor and juiciness but on the other hand it made for a messy burger. Overall, well done Beefy's. After years of wondering how it would be to eat at Beefy's, my husband and I finally had lunch here today! The artist in me loves its quirky, retro style - like something you would see in the middle of nowhere along Route 66. And I like that they offer some non-"beefy" items. My husband likes their reasonable prices, by today's standards. They have a few parking spaces in back and we were lucky to snag one of those. We walked up to a "please wait to be seated" sign but were greeted immediately and shown to an available outdoor picnic table. Although it was a hot day, each table has an umbrella and it felt cool in the shade with the breeze. Our server was quick and friendly. He told us that everything was available today except for shakes. Darn! My husband ordered the Green Horn Burger (comes with green chilis and pepperjack cheese) while I had Stacy's Green Eyed Monster (grilled cheese, with green chilis and avocado on sourdough). We also shared an order of garlic fries. We noticed that they have a burger called "Awesome, Awesome" which is obviously their answer to the former Reno staple, the Awful, Awful burger. My husband thought his burger was good, high praise for him! And I really enjoyed my sandwich! As for the fries, we both agreed that we have had better. Their Happy Hour is from 2-5 (wing specials and $1 off draught beers) and we noticed that most people there were taking advantage of it by having beer with their meals. AWARENESS: I've seen Beefy's on various food channels and always wanted to give it try. This last weekend, while visiting the Reno area, I got my chance. NARRATIVE: If you're driving down S. Virginia St. keeping an eye out for Beefy's, you'll probably drive right by it. It's not big. It blends in with the surrounding buildings and, there's no dazzle-dazzle from the front to give its location away. Once I found Beefy's and some parking, we headed to the back-side of the restaurant since we had our dogs with us. Out back, they are five large picnic tables with umbrellas for shade or in our case, rain. Orders for drinks and meals were taken by our sever via an iPad and within 15 minutes, everything arrived at the table. The Food - I ordered the Pastrami Burger, medium rare and the wife ordered their Garlic Fries and a burger. My burger was fantastic. Cooked to order, juicy, favorable and the plus, not salty. The Garlic Fries were s=some of the best I've eaten. Cooked crispy and loaded with minced garlic. It didn't disapoint. SCENE: Beefy's is located at the corner of E. Arroyo St. and S. Virginia St. in the Midtown area of Reno. RECOMMENDATION(S): Fantastic burgers, service and beers. Highly recommened. read more

And it hasn't even hit the grill yet? My partner wanted to leave but we waited this fucking long; might as well just stay and don't tip them. Best burger in Reno with Royce a close second. Tops in town due to their quality and quantity of burgers offered compared to relatively few at Royce. Plus a very old school funky small diner location. Only place in town with a similar vibe is Carrillo's Cucina. Definitely would want to sit inside on any day that is warm as indoor seating is very limited. They're ordering system takes a while but once order is placed food comes out promptly.
